One hill route plus a loop of the rec center.

First workout in about 10 days (sort of a pattern there), and I'm just amazed how I'm maintaining fitness. I didn't have to stop at any time tonight (although I did once when I had to change a song on my iPod). I've also got some "big goal" events later this summer, so I've got to do more than just maintain fitness.

Big news from the last few days: I bought a used 2003 VW Jetta TDI. I always assumed the TDI meant "fast", but I learned last week that what it really means is high fuel economy. My Ford Contour gets 27mpg (8.7L/100km). I drive 100 miles (160km) every day, and I buy $340 of fuel per month. This Jetta TDI gets 49mpg (4.8L/100km), and even with the slightly higher cost of diesel (did I mention it's a diesel)---I should now ba able to pay $170 per month. Since the gas prices went up after Katrina, I haven't looked at the economics of my commute. I was shocked. The Jetta basically fell into my lap---someone at work needed to sell it quickly, and we were able to negotiate a price we both liked. I'm going to really miss the acceleration of my Contour, but this Jetta is no slouch, and the handling is really nice.

300 (1) Much better than I expected. I heard it was a few minutes of set-up, then a battle that lasts the whole movie. I heard 3 people describe the movie that way. They lied. It's well-paced, and it has cool action sequences with nice tempo changes. I couldn't get into the voice-over story---It just didn't pull me in. And one more thing---I was expecting blood and gore and guts, and it really wasn't that bad. I find it's a lot easier to watch stylized violence like this than it is to watch violence that appears to be real. The "ear scene" in Reservoir Dogs is just about the sickest thing I've ever seen on screen, and the camera doesn't even show it. This movie, 300, has blood splattering everywhere and it just doesn't bother me.

King Kong (2005) (0) I really hate giving this a zero. The effects are good, and for the most part the story was surprising and interesting. But I couldn't stand some "strings that never get tied". Most people have heard the axiom that "a gun on the wall when the curtains open must be fired by the third act". I almost completely disagree with that axiom, mostly because I sometimes notice so many little details that I can't expect them to mean something in the big story, and also because when you have to make the story use that gun on the wall, everyone sees it coming, which can be boring. But this movie points out all these little details and all these little personality quirks of about 5 or 8 characters... ... ... ...AND THEN NEVER USES THEM! Or maybe I just don't get it.
