ARDF 80m race 2:47:00 [5] ***
spiked:3/5c shoes: Nike GoreTex

US ARDF Champs 80m day. Brutal effort. The combination of 7000+ feet altitude and moderate-to-high climb just killed me. The 2m day map had me thinking like Churchill: "Never, Never, Never Go Straight," so I was hoping today's map would be better. Well, it was, sort of. The start and finish were reasonably close together, and I think two orders were correct (sort of CW and CCW). I went CW, because I thought it would be shorter, and the mapping around the first four points was pretty good. White was white, and the green was as-mapped. All was okay until I needed to get from 1 to 3, and my eye said, "Go pretty much straight", which meant uphill about 100m (20 contours) to a trail. It was mapped white, but wasn't, and the mapping of the trail *had* to be wrong. Looking at the times for 1-3 (uphill) and 3-1 (downhill) indicate to me that the leg had serious problems. I got out-ran by two people (who beat me by about an hour), but it was good enough for bronze.

ARDF 2m race 2:08:00 [5] ***
spiked:2/5c shoes: Nike GoreTex

2m event at the US ARDF Championships. I was a distant second in my age group (there are only 26 or 29 competitors total). I made one major error that cost me at least 15 minutes. I'm still recovering, and Friday is the 80m event, which the organizers have said is much more rugged than day 1.

Note

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is day one of the US Radio Orienteering
Championships. I've screwed up and haven't gone to bed
yet, but I've still got 20 minutes of stuff to do. I'm not physically
as prepared as I planned, and I've got the jitters, something I don't
get from regular orienteering very much. I planned to do four
workouts a week for the last three months, but I didn't. Last year I
was lucky to do one workout a week (usually an O'course), and this year I pretty
much doubled my workouts to two times a week, although not double in
time. I'm more fit, but not by much. I've still got a goal to get a
Billygoat shirt, and that's not going to happen with this volume of
training.

Quick event on short notice. Dick set an amazing course. It was reflection-ville out there. Stanbery Park in Mt. Washington. We really need to get a pro mapper to map that park. It is an amazing gem for small orienteering events. It's a bit fighty, but a good map would take care of that.
I was winner, but only because Brian and Bob had radio troubles. Also, I'm calling it a 4-intensity because it was so short I spent a significant amount of time walking so as not to overrun by the next cycle.
