Setting 80m micro-transmitters at England-Idlewild. Competitors were Mike, Dick, Brian, and Marji. All four spent bout an hour on-the-course, maybe a bit less. Three weeks to the US Championships. Last big opportunity for us to all attend a practice.
6 PM

ARDF Setting 40:41 intensity: (24:28 @0) + (5:33 @1) + (6:21 @2) + (4:09 @3) + (10 @4) 1.4 km (29:04 / km) +19m 27:13 / km

Picking up 2 and 5. Mike got 3, and Brian and Marji got 1 and 3.

Started watch late for this and the pickup. A really fun course by k4bri. Some real opportunities to mess up soon after the start.

I had really good luck on every transmitter. I was able to tell about how far I was from the transmitters and push to get a 4 or 5 on my receiver. If I get a 5 near the beginning of the minute, I can usually get to the transmitter within 2 minutes. In fight---that doesn't apply. If I get a 4, I run as much as I can to try to get that up to a five. I need to recalibrate on our new transmitters, but in the past, 5 meant it's <225m or so, and 6 meant <80m or so.

The "Nick radios" have a distance estimation display, and I imagine that helps greatly because it's much finer than the Ackerly 0-9 display.

MTBO Setting 1:09:25 [3] 5.53 km (12:33 / km) +51m 12:00 / km

Actually this is setting 2m ARDF, but with a MTB.

I was shooting for something a little harder than what we have been doing, but still not crazy long. I was really worried people would finish in 30-40 minutes, but that didn't happen. Mike won in 1:14:47, with Brian about 2.5 minutes behind. Also competing were Dick and Marji.

Using the MTB for setting was a lot of fun, although I didn't have a map (!!) until about halfway through when my phone got enough signal to download the map image Mike sent me.
7 PM

MTBO Setting 44:29 [3] 3.9 km (11:25 / km) +48m 10:45 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi w SPD

Picking up the first three transmitters. I had forgotten my route after the first two, so I was in a bit of a panic until I figured out what I had done. It was starting to get dark in the woods...

The mountain bike trails were really nice. I barely explored them---probably 10% or less. I was going pretty fast sometimes, but then I also walked up some hills.
