An easy hour's jaunt through snowy woods at Coney Rock with Ken before going in to work. Cold but comfortable...

2017 Recap. Actually not a horrible year considering a self-imposed moratorium on racing. No A-Meets, no road trips other than the 8 hour adventure race in PA. And no target races for training motivation, yet I still got out there...
O highlight events were corn maze, Pawtuckaway and Traverse which I walked. A few local meet appearances here and there. And the bike once again saw almost no activity. But I did manage to get out on a handful of local runs most weeks, often with reasonable intensity, so felt pretty fit most of the year.
Would like to do more O in 2018, and perhaps more cycling. But as of now the only thing firmly on the calendar is the Pineland 50 miler Memorial Day weekend.

10F to start, 10F to finish. So yeah, 10F.... Decent run, wasn't cold at all, hands actually too warm with 2nd pair of gloves. Then Lucky Taco with the crew...
Run - Trail hills 55:43 5.08 mi (10:58 / mi) +284m9:21 / mi ahr:143 max:163 shoes: 340 ORoc 2011
Probably the warmest day of the week, made it into the 20s. About an hours worth of up and down on the snow covered slopes of Fox Hill. May break out the snowshoes next time around. Snow certainly isn't going anywhere soon.

The Eponymous Jack Fulton Loop
A nice outing with some of the Mansfield crew. Hit many of the high points including Wolf Rock, Schoolhouse Brook Park, 50 Foot Cliffs, Coney Rock & Dorwarts Preserve. Icy in many spots, but likely better than yesterday morning when this run was supposed to take place.

Coyote Run @ Center Springs Park & Cheney Railtrail. Nice night for a run on trails I didn't even know existed... And libations with the gang at Lucky Taco
Run - Road (Mt Nebo) 50:44 5.63 mi (9:01 / mi) +142m8:21 / mi ahr:143 max:173 shoes: Speed Cross Varios 2015
Wasn't feeling hills, so ventured over to Silk City territory to run with Art & Co. Fine run, though surprised to hit some black ice even with temps still in 40s after a sunny day.

Strider group run at forest. 10F, clear.
First run in about 4 weeks. Easy pace, but faster than the rest of the group so off the front and running solo. But running slow enough to stay with group felt forced and I didn't want risk aggravating the hamstring. But everything felt fine - the cardiovascular needs work, but that's to be expected.
Run - Trail warm up/down 10:42 0.81 mi (13:12 / mi) +48m11:08 / mi ahr:149 max:174 shoes: 340 ORoc 2010
And a little more, about half of this off trail in the woods, dodging laurel...
Orienteering (RHINO X) 58:26 2.88 mi (20:17 / mi) +187m16:53 / mi ahr:145 max:179 shoes: Speed Cross Varios 2015
RHINO-X the Annual Fest at Charlie & Rhonda's place. A good time and a huge crowd owing to 4 van loads of West Point cadets... This was my first run back after a couple weeks off for the hamstring pull. The good news is that no twinges or anything so I shall call myself healed, but will take it easy for a few runs.
Down side to this run is that Hayden couldn't find his headlamp, so I gave him mine and I just ran with my backup (handheld). Fine for the first couple control, though every time I shined it at the map the reflection blinded me. But upon leaving the 2nd control, the light suddenly dimmed to its minimum brightness setting (ie not much). Turned it back to a brighter more useful level and within 10 seconds it dropped again. Damn, battery dying.
Gave a brief consideration to just doing a couple more and taking the DNF, but then decided to just go slow and careful on the low setting and hope for the best. Worst case was the full moon was rising in the east, so if it totally died on me I could just navigate by moonlight and generally head back toward the house. But the light held out and I did the whole course - a couple walkabouts - mostly because I couldn't see very far into the distance and got pushed around a lot by laurel thickets - weren't really errors but just the limitations of navigating in a 6' sphere of illumination.
