Long day chaperoning Ag field trip to Bronx Zoo & NYBG with Ellen. Teens off on their own, so basically an all day date with Ellen. Got to see the Chihuly exhibit that closes next week. And delivered a rare plant to the collections folks at NYBG since I was going anyway, so could almost call it a 'work day'.

But no hills, which were cancelled on account of torrential rains anyway...

A little stiff from yesterday, so elected the age appropriate green course rather than the longer red course on offer. Never ran very hard (perceived effort), walked a few hills when called for. Clean run except for a 60 sec bobble on 4 (came over ridge too far S and noted marsh below me) and a hesitation in the circle on 7. Looks like GPS didn't get a lock until a few minutes in around control #3, usually connects within seconds so I didn't even look at the start. It did do a software update when I arrived, so maybe that explains the slow start.

{edit} comparing my track with the map, it appears I overshot and wandered on #7, but I distinctly remember coming in to the rocky reentrant, stopping, and scanning up and down looking for a 1.5m boulder (or a boulder of about the same size as #6, 1.5m that I had just come from). Eventually noticed a glimpse of orange about 30' below me on a boulder that, from my perspective above it, was barely bigger than the surrounding rocks and was in no way 1.5m. Went down and punched. But did not wander beyond the stony ground in search of the flag. But then the pace graph infers that I did so faster than 5 minutes per mile pace, no chance I could even run that fast on a track. Must be a GPS overshoot glitch - weird though, the watch is usually pretty good with tracking... Maybe the software update reset it to smart recording and it assumed I was still trucking along before realizing I had stopped to look for the flag.

{edit again} - yup, watch back to factory defaults, smart recording and GPS only. Reset it back to every second recording and GPS+GLONASS.

Signed up for Pineland Farms 50 miler in May. A reason to get out the door and train this winter I suppose... But mostly because there's a decent Strider contingent already signed up... more cowbell!!

Up to Maine to visit Anna pre-birthday - she turns 21 tomorrow. She was pretty busy in studio, so the rest of us stopped a little short of Portland and went for a very nice walk on the Eastern Trail (ECG) at Scarborough Marsh. Great chance to catch up with Jackson. Elevation profile seems about right - dead flat except for on bridge coming & going.

Lots of folks out - walkers, runners, birders & cyclists. Although we didn't see any, I kept thinking how fun it would be to just roll along on a recumbent taking in the sights. Miss the Slipstream, but it was a beast on uphills and that's mostly what we have here. But I'd consider another for Greenway style riding - they are a blast to ride..

Maybe I'll break the bike out tomorrow - its been feeling awfully neglected this year...

Happy Hills moved to Henry Park in Vernon for the winter to avoid running in dark on Hopkins. More lights and slower traffic at Henry Park. Most ran repeats on the road to Fox Hill Tower, but there's a nice expanse of lawn/hill. Played with a few different options, but think I've got a decent loop, perhaps a half mile round trip, easily repeatable, but certainly not easy. Lights weren't on tonight, but I suspect they light it up as a sledding hill if/when the snow flies. Didn't feel like a full hour tonight, but will hopefully make this a consistent thing.
