Note

Looking back at Routegadget maps (I never got my Long map back) I now realize what I did to mp on Monday. Controls 10,11&12 were pretty close together in a straight line. 10 was fine, but then partway to #11 things didn't feel right, I slowed down, checked the map and looked around and looking back to my right things seemed to make sense and I saw a bag so I jogged over to verify and lo and behold #61 was indeed on my description sheet. What I failed to notice, coming in from a different direction, is that this was actually #10 that I had already punched. But I mistakenly assumed it was 11, then headed off to #12, which in retrospect seemed to take a little longer to get to than I was expecting, but I didnt put the pieces together. So I apparently visited #10 twice in a row and then indeed didn't go to #11, passing below it looking for #12 lower on the slope. Ah well, it was a fun weekend anyway...

Orienteering warm up/down (Monday Model) 15:00 [1] ***
shoes: Salomon TR2

Checking out the warmup area with Jackson.

Orienteering race (Long RedX) 1:21:55 [5] *** 8.4 km (9:45 / km) +355m 8:03 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Well, the card says I mispunched #11. But it was a great race. Controls #2 & #3 were quite tentative as I had a bit of a time reading the trails correctly, but then settled down and mostly ignored minor trails. Didn't question it at download as I had to get back to go out with Jackson on his course, but looking at the map afterwards, I know I went to #11 and verified the correct control # because I went via a nearby control that I knew wasn't mine (the fire ring photo in the meet notes). But I guess the box didn't beep (can't recall that specifically) And my leg to #12 from there was just fine. I have no doubt in my mind that I went there, so I'm counting this as a full race here on Attackpoint.

Orienteering (Long White) 1:09:54 [1] *** 2.6 km (26:53 / km) +60m 24:06 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Shadowing Jackson on his first official 'A' meet course. After noon by the time he went out and quite warm. Did very well for the first half, then had an error on #7 and I assisted him a bit as he was getting very discouraged. Then ok for a couple more and another need for assistance.

Overall he did quite well, considering the heat was bothering him and it was a long white course. Had the result changed from 'A' course to 'Rec' course due to my minor assistance. He enjoyed the whole weekend, but I think he'll stick with Rec courses a bit longer until he builds up his confidence more and ability to correct the errors without getting frustrated so easily.

AOWN - Enroute to #6 (which was at Saturdays first callup line location) - I stopped Jackson and pointed directly ahead down the road. He quickly chided me for assisting as it turns out I was also pointing at the flag (which I hadn't previously noted) but instead at a young deer coming over the embankment about 10 meters in front of us (which Jackson hadn't seen) and then proceeded to cross the road in front of us and head up into the woods.

Orienteering (Model Event) 45:00 [2] ***
shoes: Salomon TR2

Walked / jogged the model event at Hickory Run with Jackson. AOWN - found a really large bear scat and a deer skull.... 9 year olds love that stuff...

Orienteering race (Middle Distance RedX) 50:24 [5] *** 4.3 km (11:43 / km) +160m 9:53 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Errors on #1 & #2 probably worth 7-8 minutes, then settled down and navigated more slowly and tentatively but pretty clean the rest of the way. Only other error was on the long leg from 9-10 I didn't notice the trail across the bridge and misread it as a form line at the top of the slope - so I opted to do my climbing on the road, running back through the start callup area, then cutting across the stream and up the hill to avoid a long leg in light green. Executed my route perfectly, but in retrospect that trail probably would have saved me a couple minutes. Middle of the pack today...

Orienteering (Middle Distance White) 29:31 [3] 1.7 km (17:22 / km) +40m 15:32 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Shadowing Jackson on white. Another good outing for him, including a number of off trail legs - 2 by design, one by Jacksons choice. The latter would have been fast going around on trail, but he learned that the hard way. One major error heading down the wrong trail to #7, I let him go about 2 minutes before telling him to stop, read the map and figure out where he was. Back to #6 we went and then ok from there...

Orienteering (Sprint Model) 40:00 [1] ***
shoes: Salomon TR2

Walked / jogged the Mountaintop campus model event with Jackson upon arriving in Bethlehem.

Run - Road warm up/down 40:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon TR2

Walk to the start - once for my course, then again with Jackson. I jogged most of it for mine, walked with Jackson. Lots O climb...

Orienteering race (Lehigh Sprint Red) 23:58 [5] *** 3.1 km (7:44 / km) +58m 7:04 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Good race, awesome venue. One hesitation came down a slope at an angle to avoid mulched bed (wasn't green though) and ended up a bit west of where I wanted to be, couldn't make sense of the vegetation (white vs open), then turned around and saw flag right behind me - 20s lost there. A few other spots where my route wasn't the optimum (based upon post race reading of the map), but I chose my routes and executed them well. 1st place M45 and hopefully worth some decent sprint points..

Routegadget

Orienteering (Lehigh Sprint White) 28:47 [3] *** 1.7 km (16:56 / km) +10m 16:27 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Shadowing Jackson on Rec White Sprint. I really liked the fact that DVOA made the rec courses use the same course, and the competitors got to be part of the same system - call up lines, e-punching, download - the whole works. It really gave Jackson the full A-meet experience. he had a great time and did really well with only very mimimal coaching on my part.

Orienteering (Crandalls) 36:00 [1] 2.0 km (18:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

White course line-o training with Jackson. Highlighted a trail route on map and had him follow it - practicing folding the map, keeping it oriented and announcing the major features he was looking for and then when he reached them. He walked past two trail junctions but realized within a minute or so that things weren't right, and then relocated/back tracked with a little nudging. Monday will be interesting, to say the least...

Hiking 40:00 [1] 3.86 km (10:22 / km) +70m 9:30 / km
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Didn't feel like the hassle of changing clothes this AM, so walked up to Crystal Lake to retrieve the car rather than running. Nice morning for a walk though..

Run - Road 18:00 [3] 3.86 km (4:40 / km) +70m 4:17 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

dropped car off at Doug's at dawn, run home to pick up bike...

Bike - Recumbent (commute) 1:14:00 [3] 24.0 km (3:05 / km) +300m 2:54 / km
shoes: Slipstream

after running back from Doug's, hopped on the bike for the work commute. New pedals work really nice. Nice morning for riding, quads complaining a bit near the end. Expecting a new crank with lower gearing tomorrow - should help keep me spinning on the steeper hills.

Bike - Recumbent (commute) 1:00:00 [3] 18.8 km (3:11 / km) +300m 2:57 / km
shoes: Slipstream

The direct route as I had to make sure I was home for the bus...

shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Bike - Recumbent (Lake & back) 30:00 [1] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Run - Trail race (Soapstone Sampler) 28:30 [5] 6.1 km (4:40 / km) +100m 4:19 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Ran the Sampler with the kids. They were content to run their own races, and since the sampler has an age handicapped start, they were off a few minutes before me anyway. So I opted to race it. Starting in the 'E' group, I knew there were a number of fast looking younger runners in the few waves starting after me, so my goal was to run hard on the early dirt road section, to put myself out of their sights and hopefully they wouldn't reel me in. Ran well the whole race, passing lots of folks in the first half. By the time I was down off Hedgehog and back on Sodom Road, I was by myself, no one in sight ahead or behind... Kept the pace as hard as I could and into the finish.

This is probably the only time in my life where I'll see my name ahead of such legendary trail running names as Nephew and Schmidt. (ok, it was Stephanie Nephew and Liz Schmidt, but they're both strong runners in their own right.)

When I finished, I was told one person finished ahead of me but apparently he started in the wrong start group and they would adjust the results accordingly. Didn't stick around as I went back out and jogged the course in reverse to catch up with and finish the back half with my kids.

When we finished up their races I was told that the time difference had put me in first place.. I got a rock.... (its a very nice rock, BTW).

Next year there is talk of setting up an even shorter kids race - my kids are able to finish the 4 miler, but they do end up walking most of the second half. It will be great to see a shorter race tailored just for the kids...

PS - This years winning time was about a minute slower than last years 4th place finish.

Run - Trail warm up/down (Sampler redux75) 30:00 [1] 3.0 km (10:00 / km) +75m 8:53 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

easy jog back out on the course in reverse to catch up and check on the kids. They were all in a group coming up the N side of Hedgehog when I caught up to them. Jackson kid of took off after the top and I walk/jogged the remaining way be with Anna and Hayden.

Orienteering race (Huntington Red) 1:24:01 [4] *** 7.6 km (11:03 / km) +55m 10:40 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Nice day, great course. A few minor errors, nothing horrendous. Not terribly fast though, Peter beat me on every split by a substantial margin except where he messed up or on the climbing legs.

Orienteering warm up/down (Huntington - White) 29:40 [1] *** 1.29 km (23:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Shadowed / coached Jackson on White. Did pretty well, but wasn't inclined to run too often. But wasn't distracted much either. We'll have coached courses on Sat/Sun next weekend and then Monday will be his first real test going solo at the DVOA meet.

Note

National Bike to Work day. Should have ridden the bike, eh? Had my biking stuff set out this AM, but the forecast for this afternoon looks pretty bleak, so I opted out. Now that I'm at work I'm feeling guilty about not riding.

Wednesday May 14, 2008 #

Fieldwork (Crandalls) 3:30:00 [1] ***
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

more mapping, coming along nicely, got a few more holes to fill in, then time to clean up some rough spots. Should have a workable course setters map by next week.

Then lots of hours drafting, including catching up on some old field notes I hadn't finished drafting as well as drafting in the OOB sections from the basemap (no field checking). Had to overlay the latest Google Maps satelite photo in one section as there's an entire development that wasn't on the aerials/basemap. But we knew that was out of bounds before we started..

Bike - Recumbent (Airline South) 1:20:00 [3] 17.5 km (4:34 / km) +100m 4:27 / km
shoes: Slipstream

Played hookey and went for a bike ride with Ellen today. Went down to East Hampton and checked out the western end of the Airline South Rail Trail. Nice slow pace, gorgeous day. Nice big owl flew overhead and landed in a tree near the trail just before the Lyman Viaduct. (not my photo)

Only rode 5.5 miles out then turned around to come back. Ellen's not used to riding a bike and we needed to make sure to leave enough time to go to Harry's Place in Colchester for lunch before heading home. Chocolate Shake and a couple of cheeseburgers - yummy...

Saw a really fine coyote just south of the main entrance to Gay City on the way home too...

Mapping tomorrow...

Bike - Recumbent (commute) 1:10:00 [3] 24.0 km (2:55 / km) +300m 2:45 / km
shoes: Slipstream

cool, bright overcast. Nice morning to ride. Took the longer route out by the golf course. Located, of all places, on Folly Lane....

Bike - Recumbent (commute) 1:15:00 [3] 23.6 km (3:11 / km) +385m 2:56 / km
shoes: Slipstream

home via S River Road, Birch Grove and Bald Hill. Not sure what possessed me to go over Bald Hill, but I did...

Wednesday May 7, 2008 #

Note

woke up early, ready to ride - but my legs were totally dead. so decided not to ride today...

Run - Road warm up/down 9:22 [2] 2.0 km (4:41 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Run - Trail (LoDFP) 21:02 [3] 4.15 km (5:04 / km) +65m 4:42 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Legs still felt dead, but I was home early and it was too nice out not to do something, so went for a run. Moderate pace, upper chest quite tight - lingering cold or just seasonal allergies? Think I'll go clean and lube the bike next...

Tuesday May 6, 2008 #

Bike - Recumbent (commute) 1:00:00 [3] 18.8 km (3:11 / km) +300m 2:57 / km
shoes: Slipstream

nice morning, 35F. Tough motivating myself to get on the bike, but felt great to be out once rolling....

Bike - Recumbent (commute) 1:14:00 [3] 24.0 km (3:05 / km) +300m 2:54 / km
shoes: Slipstream

warm afternoon, took the long way past Skungamaug Rogaine Practice Course, then up past Weigold and Crandalls.

Friday May 2, 2008 #

Note

Day off, planning to do some mapping, but Hayden came down sick so I stayed home with him instead. Got a bit of drafting done on some unfinished field notes, so not a total loss. Working the weekend though, so not likely to get back out in the woods until next week. But hope to get quite a bit of work done in the next couple of weeks.
