Orienteering (Trout Brook Loop A) 48:31 [2] *** 2.6 km (18:40 / km) +110m 15:24 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Went down to Easton to do Pavlina's 1-man relay with Jackson along. Original plan was to do a beginner course with him, then go do the relay solo. Decided when we got there that we would do the first loop together, then he would hang out while I did the remaining loops at a less pedestrian pace. Very nice day in the woods, Jackson had lots of fun with the stream crossings and marsh traipsing, but hard to convince him to jog at a steady pace, particularly on the trails in the second half and the fine white woods. Oh well, he got out there with me.

Orienteering race (Trout Brook Loop B) 19:13 [4] *** 2.5 km (7:41 / km) +110m 6:18 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Picked up the map, checked to make sure Jackson was good and then headed out on the second loop behind a number of others including Petr Polivka. Passed the other couple of people after the first two, but seemed like Petr was always in the distance. Took different routes but never really gained on him. I think I could have caught him if I wanted to, but due to my slower first loop, I was on #2 and he was likely on #3 so I didn't want to overdo it on this loop. Clean all the way around.

Orienteering (Trout Brook Loop C) 23:07 [3] *** 2.1 km (11:00 / km) +110m 8:43 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Third loop, stopped by the car to make sure Jackson was still doing ok (subtracted 30s for this), then out on my final loop. A lot of climbing early (or maybe I was just feeling it more on this leg) so quite a bit of walking and lower intensity on this loop. Went just fine except for the final control in the marsh, I cut off the main trail and headed over the spur of the hill and wound up quite a distance down the marsh from where I eventually found the flag. Didn't take the time to size things up, but I suspect the bag wasn't really in the middle of the circle and perhaps not in the circle at all. Got a bit muddy checking backsides of rootstocks for possible flag hiding spots until I finally worked my way up to where it was located. Pretty steady effort, no falls or injuries...

Hiking (Shafran) 40:00 [1] 1.75 km (22:51 / km) +30m 21:03 / km
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Knots Geocache with Jackson and Hayden. Found all three without difficulty (Hayden and I found #1 previously, but let Jackson find it today). Getting chilly out - too chilly for late March...

Friday Mar 28, 2008 #

Run - Road warm up/down 10:46 [2] 2.0 km (5:23 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Misty, gray, 38F

Run - Trail tempo (Shafran) 35:15 intensity: (30:15 @3) + (5:00 @5) 6.1 km (5:47 / km) +155m 5:08 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Random assortment of trails, all the 'loops' in Shafran proper, plus a couple trails I hadn't been on before leading to various backyard(s) so I doglegged those, then came back via a different set of trails hooking back up with the old trolley line. Pushed as hard as I could for the last 5 minutes or so. Felt good all the way around.

Hiking (Shafran) 35:00 [1] 2.2 km (15:55 / km)
rhr:46 shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Geocaching with Hayden. Found first of a multi, but requires a pretty comprehensive knowledge of knots, so we'll read up and go back again. It was also starting to rain, so another good reason to get out of the woods.

Run - Mixed (Geocaching) 1:20:00 [1] 5.45 km (14:41 / km) +85m 13:37 / km
rhr:43 shoes: Salomon TR2

First part of a multi cache with the boys. This part involved finding and utilizing a laser to find the clue to the final. Also required knowing which of 6 phobias was not a real phobia (got it right on the first try). A combination of walking and jogging (though jogging with Hayden is more like jogging in place, still it gets the heart rate up a bit).

Ran out of daylight to get the final so we'll attempt it on a different day, but perhaps driving as its even farther from home and Hayden was dragging a bit by the time we got home...

Run - Trail tempo (LoDFP) 19:29 intensity: (6:04 @4) + (13:25 @5) 4.15 km (4:42 / km) +65m 4:21 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Nice afternoon, 45F and sunny. Went out for a brisk tempo run, felt pretty good, but then face planted hard about 2/3 of the way and just couldn't muster a 5 effort for the final bit. No fishers, but had to dig quite a bit of wood out from under my thumbnail when I got home.

Run - Road warm up/down 9:20 [3] 2.0 km (4:40 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Hiking (geocache) 20:00 [1]

Went back with clues this time, got a bit further but still didn't find a cache at #2 (of 4). One of the reasons I don't like letterboxing - clues can be rather vague. Kind of like bingo O controls. When I'm in the circle, I expect to find the control in fairly short order.

Core 3:30 [1]

The ups. While laying down on the floor to do these, I noted that I must have crashed a lot harder than I thought. I've got a half-dollar sized swelling above my left knee (doesn't hurt unless pressed), my right elbow is sore, and my ribcage is tender in the back on the right side.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 4.85 km (12:22 / km) +65m 11:36 / km
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Geocaching with Jackson and Hayden after work. Mostly roads to cemetary on Browns Bridge, first cache of a multi, but we couldn't locate it. Will check the clues and try again since its near home.

Orienteering ('98 Troll Cup Blue 1) 1:32:11 [3] *** 11.24 km (8:12 / km) +330m 7:09 / km
rhr:47 weight:76.2kg shoes: Salomon TR2

Was going to follow the lead of JHen/Phil and rerun the 2001 Goat, but couldn't locate the map. Couldn't find a copy in the PG archives either and could only remember some of the control locations from memory.

So I decided to dig out the Blue course from the Troll Cup - hard to believe that was only 10 years ago - seems like ages. But a fine course it was - if I recall it was a DeWeese design with Gagarin vetting - or maybe the other way around.

Jogging into the start I really didn't feel all that energetic, but it was clear blue skies and about 35, so worst case I'd have a nice walk in the woods. Had a bottle of dew and a GU in my fanny pack so confident to begin.

Visited the cows at #2, didn't notice too many minor bones, but a couple skulls still evident.

No real navigation problems, but hesitated in the circle a couple times to verify I was on the correct feature and not a nearby one, in all cases I was good.

I've visited all these control sites before, and I'm sure I must have run this course before, but a number of the legs felt 'new' to me. Perhaps I just took different routes than previously or perhaps age has deleted some of the old ones from memory (I turned the age counter ahead a year today)

Flushed up a sizable (12+) herd of deer enroute to #16, and also crossed paths with a couple different groups of mtn bikers (literally as I would pop out and cross the trail in front of them)

Had to walk a number of the steeper hillsides, but took the opportunity to sip on my dew. I would have to say my energy felt stronger on the second half than on the first, but that may have been because I was pushing to see if I could break 90 minutes after doing the first 10 controls in reasonable time. I didn't break 90, but at least it bodes well for being able to run the ultra long without major bonkage.

Note: The weight (2 below my stable average of 170#) was post run, but also after consuming a large turkey sub. That thing had to be 2# by itself, so probably finished up the run down a couple additional pounds. Or maybe I'm in an uncontrolled free-fall toward the G. Nah....

Run - Mixed warm up/down 15:00 intensity: (9:00 @1) + (6:00 @2)
shoes: Salomon TR2

jogging in to the start, brisk walk out from the finish

Note

Decided to keep track of Geocache's found in an effort to motivate the boys to get out and do more of them (or do them more frequently at least). So I'll periodically keep a running tally for the current month and year.

2008 - 7 found, 1 miss
March 08 - 7 found, 1 miss

Note that I'm counting yesterday's first miss as a found cache because we searched every nook and cranny in the vicinity only to later find it had been removed. If it had been there, we'd have found it. In the case of the latter miss, I suspect it was placed with a less accurate GPS and thus the control 'circle' was likely larger than what we were searching in. But it was late in the day, sun going behind ridge so we only spent 15 minutes searching. Note we also go with coordinates only - don't bother reading the descriptions, clues or even what size cache we're looking for. We go to the location and look for something cache-like - sometimes with success, othertimes not, but we get out in the woods....

Core (Leg Ups) 3:30 [1]

Note

Have to work tomorrow (Easter), but since I don't have to be in uber early, I can ride in daylight and will probably ride the 'bent. Not sure what possessed me, but I decided to weigh the bike (as ridden, not stripped) and it weighs in at just a tad over 45# - ouch. No wonder the hills suck so bad. Might have to seriously look at a lighter bike for the future like that Mistral I was musing over last week - that would shave over 40% off the total bike weight. I do like the ride of the LWB though.

Hiking (Valley Falls) 2:00:00 [2] 6.25 km (19:12 / km) +225m 16:16 / km
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Geocaching with Jackson, in the vicinity of the rail trail, but mostly traipsing off trail, up and down steep embankments, through marshy areas and a number of tricky stream crossings on slippery logs. Found the first two, 3rd one we couldn't locate (but turns out it had been removed) and couldn't locate the last one either. But a nice afternoon to be out in the woods.

Run - Road (commute) 1:45:24 [3] 18.8 km (5:36 / km) +300m 5:12 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Yup, ran to work in the dark. Considered biking, but glad I didn't as there were a number of black ice spots that would have been invisible in the dark. Loaded IPOD up with 10 hours of a book on tape (Stoneheart) and started listening to that on the run in.

Really not a bad run, but getting tired toward the end. We'll see how I feel in 7 hours when I have to turn around and run home... Or maybe I'll call today an early day and leave at noon.

The major downside to the run this AM was getting here and finding Dunkin Donuts closed (wanted my Bacon/Egg/Cheese bagel & a dew for protein/carb replacement) and then realized the convenience store across the street was closed too. Almost 20km of running and no snacks at the finish?? Damn this sucks.. Guess I'll have to hit the vending machines in TLS.

Run - Road long (commute) 1:59:36 [3] 18.8 km (6:22 / km) +300m 5:53 / km
rhr:48 weight:75.3kg shoes: Salomon TR2

Missing breakfast (and caffiene) was not good this AM. That and the fact that I don't take a lunch break (so I can leave an hour earlier) meant that my muscles were sorely depleted when I headed back home at 2pm. And within a mile it was evident it was going to be a slog. Lots of walk/run both on hills and elsewhere. About halfway home I hit the convenience store and got a 20oz Dew, shortly thereafter a little life came back into the legs - the running segments got a tad longer, but more energetic, but I still had plenty of walking stretches. Although it was probably 15-20F warmer and the sun was out, it felt colder than going in because I was running into a stiff headwind all the way home. A lot more traffic too. Found that after about 40 minutes it was such an onerous slog that I wasn't really paying much attention to the book on my IPod so I just turned it off to save it for another day..

Although my legs will be complaining for the next 24-36 hours, no damage done and it feels good to have gotten a double long run in...

Side note: down 4# from my usually rock steady 170# after getting home. Most likely due to dehydration...

Run - Trail tempo 19:39 intensity: (10:28 @4) + (9:11 @5) 4.15 km (4:44 / km) +65m 4:23 / km

Started out to do a hard effort run, but cardiovascular just not cooperating. Pushed hard for first 2km, then backed off some. Still a good outing overall, but pushing a little too hard early on I think...

Fieldwork (Crandalls) 3:00:00 [1] *** 7.0 km (25:43 / km) +275m 21:30 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Field checking at Crandalls. Up in the far western part of the park, some really sweet terrain, some marshy barberry crap - all of which will probably see little course usage as its a fairly narrow area inside the official park boundaries so would necessitate fairly severe doglegs to utilize. Nice day to be out - plenty of Symplocarpus coming up - a sure sign of spring and official mapping season.

Thursday Mar 13, 2008 #

Note
rhr:49 weight:77.1kg

The plan was to leave work at 10 or 10:30 this AM and go mapping at Crandalls. Had all the gear ready to go. Then I get a call and I've got to keep my eyes out for an overnight international package of plants from the US Virgin Islands and inspect/treat for pests when it arrives and otherwise take care of the plants. So 10:30 comes and goes and I'm off the clock (in a loose sense) waiting for the plants to arrive. 1:30pm and all the major couriers have come and gone and no plants. So I call my researchers secretary (he's also Vice Provost of Research these days) and she 'updates' me that he thought there was a possibility the parcel might get hung up in customs. Great...

If its now in the hands of Homeland Security and there's even a suspicion there might be pests on any of the enclosed plants (valid collecting permits or not) then I'll be dead and gone before I ever see that package.

Regardless, its not here and its too late to get any mapping in before I have to be home for buses, so I'll just head home and drag the bikes up out of the basement in optimistic hope I might get them on the road soon.

Bike - Recumbent (tooling about) 15:00 [1]
shoes: Slipstream

Dragged it off the trainer, up the cellar stairs and out to the driveway. Pumped up the tires, tooled up and down the road a bit running through the gears and testing brakes and such. Running fine, but my quads are going to have their work cut out getting back into 'bent shape. I think I'll leave any serious jaunts on the 'bent until after the Sprint Champs. No sense confusing my legs with different priorities.

Was reading about a new folding SWB from Challenge - the Travelling Mistral SL - carbon fiber rear fork, monotube butted aluminum main tube - only 24.5#. That would make my legs happier - probably climbs really nice too. But my tax handout from GW is going to have to get a lot larger before I'm riding one of these....

Bike - Road (more tooling about) 15:00 [1]
shoes: Cannondale ST1000

Need to start commuting by bike again, if only to be able to go longer between visiting the gas pumps in town... Problem is that I've got three substantial hills between me and my place of employment and the direct (fastest) route is on a heavily travelled road on which the 85% median speed is 13 mph faster than the limit. In a word - sucks....

I love riding the 'bent - but commuting to work (usually in the pre-dawn hours) is all about getting there in the minimum amount of time, not about enjoying the ride, so I may well go back to the touring bike for commuting purposes and leave the 'bent for longer leisurely jaunts.

So cleaned up the Cannondale and pumped up the tires (we'll see if they even hold air overnight) and tooled about. Its actually quite a nice, responsive bike (for 22 years old) but the fun goes out of it (so says my neck, wrists and back side) after 40-45 minutes or so (which happens to be how long it takes to get to work on that bike). So I think I can commute on it without too much undue discomfort - maybe we'll try it next week....

Core (leg up thingies 10x20s) 5:00 [2]

10 reps of 20 seconds, 10 seconds between - last couple were pretty tough to hold my legs still for the full 20 seconds.

I've also noticed a 'weirdness' in my left shoulder - when lying flat on my back and putting my hands behind my head, I can easily put my right arm/elbow flat on the floor with no problem, but the left I can only get down to where my elbow is about 2" off the floor without pain behind the shoulder. I can force the elbow down and lay the arm flat, but not comfortably. Not sure if its muscular or something else.

shoes: Salomon TR2

Run - Trail (DFP) 27:41 [3] 4.7 km (5:53 / km) +85m 5:24 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Easier pace today, and after yesterday's encounter I decided to carry my weasel-scope just in case. Actually pretty comfortable as its about the same size and weight as the GPS which I've been carrying in my hand on most trail runs lately. Don't normally need it, but on those days I opt to venture off trail or wander down some untrodden route, it (the GPS, not the weasel-scope) gives me a pretty good idea of how far I've gone.

Did the loop CCW rather than CW today, plus added a another internal trail loop for extra distance and fisher spotting opportunities. Saw three blue-hairs walking by the pond, but that was about it for excitement today....

Core (Ups - not...) 3:20 [1]
rhr:48 weight:77.1kg

I can't really tolerate exercises like situps, yoga etc without getting nauseous. Pretty much anything where my head moves through varying orientation. But my abdominal region is a tad out of proportion to where I'd like it to be and I'd pretty much given up on situps to work my abs when it occurred to me that I could lie flat on my back and lift my legs instead of my torso (and head) and still get the same benefit.

So I did a series of 10 - lift my legs to about 45 degrees and hold for 10 seconds, slowly lower and rest 10 seconds, repeat 10 times. Really felt it in my lower back and abs so maybe its worth doing. Will try to do these daily and slowly increase the reps...

Core (ups... not...) 3:20 [1]

Another 10 before bed...

Run - Trail tempo (Shafran) 19:09 [5] 4.15 km (4:37 / km) +65m 4:17 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Same loop as Saturday, but pushing the pace as hard as I could for the distance. Felt good even though I've still got a lot of sinus glarp.

AOWN - treed a nice sized fisher at close range - we spotted each other at about 15m and he headed up the closest tree which the trail happened to run right past. Got a good close look as I went by at less than 10 feet. Very cool....

Run - Road warm up/down 9:35 [3] 2.0 km (4:48 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

didn't start the watch leaving the house (only hit it once), so the outbound time is a guess....

Hiking (Geocaching) 50:00 [1] 3.5 km (14:17 / km) +150m 11:46 / km

Run - Trail (Shafran) 20:50 [4] 4.15 km (5:01 / km) +65m 4:39 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

CW loop around Shafran, did the dog leg to the parking area on Eaton, also the loop around the pond. A little bit of ice remains and quite a few soft muddy areas, but overall a nice run at a brisk pace..

AOWN - chased a small herd of whitetails for bit, otherwise quiet in the woods. Very damp, but not raining too much - good training for Ohio in other words...

Run - Road (SLR > Shafran) 9:15 [2] 2.0 km (4:38 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Easy warmup, cooldown on the roads.

Hiking 1:15:00 [2] 8.0 km (9:23 / km) +125m 8:42 / km
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Brisk walk home after my physical with new doctor (previous doctor semi-retired). Last physical was probably 10 years ago now, though I see the cardiologist annually. Anyway, he says I'm in fine shape, couldn't believe I had an angioplasty 8 years ago. It doesn't seem that long ago.

Got to talking orienteering and turns out he's the scoutmaster for one of the Boy Scout troops in town and a number of his scouts really enjoy orienteering on the Webster Scout Reservation. I told him that I was the one that made that map and that there was also a new map right here in Tolland (less than a km from his office).

I suspect we'll see some of the boy scouts at the meet in June and I'll probably volunteer to be an O merit badge counselor. Maybe it will get a few new people interested, who knows?

Totally guessing on my time (no watch) but estimated based upon when I got home

Run - Road (Lake / Eaton Loop) 35:24 [3] 8.0 km (4:26 / km) +100m 4:10 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

Started out to just do Hare and back, but the weather was nice (shorts) and the legs felt looser than yesterday, so after Hare I just kept going to repeat yesterday's loop. Strong on hills, downhills felt good but didn't push too hard. Good effort.

Still a lot of chest glarp and the sinuses are still pretty much impenetrable. Good thing I'm a mouth breather...

Out to Lake via SLR, up to Eaton, loop around via Browns Bridge. Legs felt best pushing uphills, couldn't find comfortable stride on level/downhill stretches. Felt good to get out though..

Bike - Stationary (basement) 10:00 [2] 3.0 km (3:20 / km)

10 minutes easy cooldown on the bike. Really can't wait to get it out on the roads.
