Fieldwork (Cross Farms) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Double checking a couple things at Cross Farms

Sunday Jun 29, 2008 #

Orienteering race (Ratlum Sprint A) 24:22 [3] 1.66 km (14:41 / km) +95m 11:25 / km
(sick) shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

Sprint A (which I ran after B). With so much laurel to bash, most of this was brisk walk/bash, with a few slow jogging segments. Minor issues
- on #2 I went straight in, realized I was on a charcoal platform, found it on the map, then turned around and saw the control down hill
- #4 - contours not right, wound up wide right, recognized I had been through here on the earlier course, turned left and hit #5 deadon, looked downhill and saw hill on which I then found #4

clean but slow the rest of the way... skies opened up for the last three controls - finished in the downpour, since I was wet and nasty, I stripped the shirt off and stood in the rain for 10 minutes, at least I washed much of the funk away, now I was just wet. Changed to a dry shirt in the house and enjoyed the fine food and finer company that always goes with a Ratlum Mtn event... Many thanks to Charlie and Rhonda...

Orienteering (Ratlum Sprint B) 29:01 [3] 2.49 km (11:39 / km) +95m 9:47 / km
(sick) shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

After being sick for the past 5 days, I didn't have any zip at all, but I ran where I could...
#5 - came down slightly north of circle, but the clearing is pretty vague with other openish areas in there, a bit of hunting until I found it.
#9 - went straight in the green from the trail junction under the line, but drifted R and crossed the trail north of the bend and got N of flag, corrected OK, but Glen got ahead of me here...
#11 - got back ahead of Glen enroute to #11, I was on a straight line, he was coming up the hill

Fieldwork (Cross Farms) 1:20:00 [1]
shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

A little more field work. I'm only going to get the area around the school done for my workshop next week and since I'm doing the map for 1:5000 sprint scale, I guess I could do the fieldwork at 1:2500. Not quite enough room to draw the fine detail around the buildings at 1:5000

Fieldwork (Cross Farms) 2:00:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

Teaching a weeklong orienteering class at a local day camp in a couple weeks, so even though I really didn't feel up to it, I dragged myself out to do some fieldwork on the map (and buy some new mylar - I'm out).

When I originally pieced together the basemap from a number of sources (GIS data, aerials etc) I thought it would be a good place to get some training in and perhaps teach orienteering, but nothing all that special. But walking around the woods today (mapping trail mostly today) it occurs to me that this might be a fine sprint venue. Only about a mile away from Crandalls - which still has its issues but I've got to focus on getting the area right around the school done for the camp I'm teaching.

Will attempt some more fieldwork tomorrow AM (when its cooler) and then go to Charlies on Sunday - not sure if I'll run or not though I'll likely talk myself into it...

Note
(sick)

In bed all day, late in the afternoon I called my regular doctor but he couldn't see me until sometime next week, so I went in to Prompt Care at the hospital for my ailment. Diagnosed with shingles, though the doctor ordered a battery of tests to screen for various tick borne ailments just in case. At least I've got a better idea of what ails me. :-(

Hiking (White Mountains) 2:00:00 [3] 5.75 km (20:52 / km) +100m 19:12 / km
(sick) shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

After yesterday, I decided to try something with less climb, so we headed out to Greeley Ponds from the Kangamagus. Note Jackson wanted another 4000 footer to bag - but I didn't have it in me today. Gorgeous day, nice hike, but I had a splitting headache the whole way. But I sucked it up and we hung out at upper pond for about an hour before heading back. Feeling rather feverish by the time we got back, also exhibiting the same painful rash I had three weeks ago.

Laid on the couch most of the afternoon, occassionally sitting up to play Monopoly with Jackson for a bit, then needing to lie down again. Felt like total crap.

Around 6:30pm decided it wasn't likely to improve, so tossed everything in the car and made a miserable 3.5 hour drive for home - that way at least Jackson would have more option on things to do and I could be miserable in my own bed... I certainly wasn't about to attempt any more 4000 footers..

Hiking (White Mountains) 6:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (32:44 / km) +1000m 22:30 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Trail 14

Schools finally out, so Jackson and I headed to NH for our annual backpacking adventure - but we decided to sleep in comfort (my sister in law's cabin) and just do day hikes this year.

We went to Crawford Depot and hiked the Avalon trail to Mt Avalon, then up to Mt. Field. Had intended to do the ridge walk to Mt Willey, but the climb to Field had taken more time than I planned, plus I didn't have much zip. The sound of distant thunder nixed that plan so we cut out the ridge traverse and just went down to the A-Z col and up the short spur to Mt Tom, then back down to the car where it started raining in the last couple 100 yards. Looking back up the mountain we couldn't see the summits any longer but it was clear they were embroiled in a pretty decent thunderstorm..

Nothing in the legs, felt like I had run a long race the day before. Must be coming down with something.

Bike - Recumbent (Crandalls) 48:00 [3] 14.0 km (3:26 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

Rode the bike to and from the Crandalls meet today...

Orienteering race (Sprint A) 18:35 [4] 2.2 km (8:27 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

First sprint, waking up controls. Blew #5 by looking at it on the map at #4, then not consulting the map enroute and going too far left and looking in the reentrant way above where I should have been. Probably cost a couple minutes, the rest ok, but not terribly fast. Quite humid out.

Orienteering (Crandalls Sprint B) 16:30 [3] 2.2 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Second sprint waking up controls. First control - not there... rechecked map, looked behind various rootstocks and low spots (Rich N hung them after all) and still nothing. Think I spent perhaps a minute and a half checking. Then continued on. No real problems with the rest of the course, but not moving all that fast.

Got back to the finish and it turns out Jim (course setter) had circled the wrong stream crossing for Rich to hang the control on. I went back out and hung it in the correct location.

Orienteering (Crandalls White) 30:00 [2] 1.7 km (17:39 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

White course with the boys. Jackson navigating, Hayden epunching. Lots of walking, sprinting when the control was in sight. Not a bad outing, Jackson did pretty well without too much coaching. Time estimated (too lazy to go get printout...)

Bike - Recumbent (Webster) 15:00 [1] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

Headed out for a ride up towards Soapstone with Hayden. Didn't want him riding on 140 so had him get off and walk his bike across this busy road. To whit he then proceeded to trip over his bike and get all scraped up. Bike injury while walking the bike - I guess its better than the alternative. Remainder of trip aborted as he wanted to head home at that point.

Sunday Jun 15, 2008 #

Run - Trail (Sharfran) 11:52 [3] 2.0 km (5:56 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

easy trail run in between road segments

Run - Road (Lake / Eaton) 26:08 [3] 5.05 km (5:10 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Road run to lake, then up Eaton. Then across Shafran on trails (different entry) then home on SLR. Did a series of phone pole intervals on the road - most of them 2 poles at a fast rate, then recovered for a couple.

Hiking (Dougs) 40:00 [1] 4.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

walk home after dropping van off at Dougs for service.

Bike - Recumbent (FV Trail) 1:05:00 [3] 14.5 km (4:29 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

with Hayden from Rt 20, to MA line and back, then down to bridge abutment at Granbrook Park and then back. Nice day. New section of trail N of Copper Hill is very nice...

Thursday Jun 12, 2008 #

Bike - Recumbent 50:00 [1] 8.25 km (6:04 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

out to lake and back with Hayden.

Wednesday Jun 11, 2008 #

Bike - Recumbent 20:00 [1] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

rode a couple miles with Hayden before pizza sumption.... Actually - Tuesday is pizza sumption night in these parts but it was too damn hot to cook last night. Much nicer this evening...

Fieldwork (Crandalls) 2:00:00 [1] *** 3.0 km (40:00 / km)
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

trying to clean up some random areas on the map before the meet in two weeks. Adding in a bit more rock on the main slope, but contours not quite matching up (basemap rather deficient in this area). Humidity a definite issue today as every time I stopped to draw, sweat would run off my nose onto the field notes, thus I probably spent more time swabbing moisture off the notes than actually drawing them - ick... guess that's why we draw on film and not paper...

Orienteering (Gay City Yellow) 1:15:00 [1] *** 3.1 km (24:12 / km)
shoes: Puma Sierra Trail Racers

Managed to get out anyway, though there was no way I could have actually run a course today. Did yellow with the family although it was pretty much Anna doing all the navigation (and quite well, if only we could get her to do it more often), Hayden managing the punch card and the rest of us along for the walk.

Note
(sick)

Waylaid with some sort of unidentified viral contagion. Flu like, but worse in intensity - severe aches, chills, sweats etc. Oh joy. I've been in bed for two days straight and no end in sight..... Doctor ruled out flu, but otherwise just told me to rest, drink and let it run its course.

Looks like no Gay City tomorrow...

Bike - Recumbent 7:30 [2] 2.5 km (3:00 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

finished shortening the chain on the bike (put a smaller crankset on) and took the bike for a quick spin down the street to run it through the gears. Have to be careful not to try to execute tight turns in my new granny gear as the forward speed too low to maintain stability. Good low gear for grinding up long hills, but should probably keep it on the middle ring otherwise (which has a nice range to it). Wanted to ride more, but bus time and other duties called me back..

Note

Apparently there's an avian theme 1, 2 going down today.... So not to miss out -

Had a homing pigeon perched on the roof of the house last night around dusk- all kind of fluffed up, he/she was still there at 5:30 this AM but had departed by the time I got home. Wonder where its headed off to??

Bike - Recumbent (Andover & back) 3:22:00 [3] 67.2 km (3:00 / km) +435m 2:55 / km
shoes: Slipstream

SLR to Rockville, Rockville Spur, Hop River Trails to Burnap Brook in Andover. Back via trails to Vernon - stopped in at Vernon Cycle to get a chain tool, then over to Taco Bell for snacks and Dew. Then across Ellington finishing up the hill on Snipsic Lake Road and around the lake to home.. Nice day, good ride....

Note: Going to try and ride something every day this month. Commute when I can, and at least down to the lake and back on busy days where I can't squeeze anything else in. We'll see how I do...

Bike - Recumbent (Webster & back) 15:00 [1] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

quick easy ride with Hayden...
