Gravel Worlds.

6am start in the dark so we had to have lights. First half hour wasn't too crazy but my bike was shifting like crap. i noticed it on friday but it worse race morning. i should have bought a new on friday before race. I just have a couple of worn out cogs. I didn't cripple me but it was annoying all day.

right off the bat a dude went off the front and was gone. nobody chased him... as expected. About 10 miles in more attacks started flying and a couple more guys got away. still too early in the race to chase those down. between miles 30-50 i tried to get in a few breaks and start one but not of them stuck.

We rolled into the mile 58 mandatory checkpoint as a pretty big group 30ish? I drilled on the front the last .5 into the checkpoint so i could be there first. We were all in and out pretty quick but this caused some separation as it was hectic with everyone trying to refill. pure chaos. ten+ guys were out before me as i fumbled around a bit so now i was in full on chase mode. it took a couple of minutes but i got back and soon enough we were back on the gravel as a big group. 20ish.

I was content to just sit in now and wait for the fireworks. The breaks were still up the road but all the big hitters were still in the group. Around mile 80 right after a road crossing some dude who had already crashed earlier went down right in front of me. Nothing i could do. I plowed right into him and went down pretty hard and quick. shit went flying every where out of my pack and off my bike and the group kept rolling. I got my shit together and chased back on burning matches I was hoping to save.

it seemed just as i got back on the real attacks started to get thrown. it split the group and i was the last dude trying to hand on to the first group but i was maxxing out nad not fully recovered from my chase and got dropped. I kept cruising, slammed some sugar, and waited for the rest of the guys that got dropped.

We rolled together from mile 90 to a gas station at mile 100. We all grabbed cokes and cold water... it was hot and mega humid. I also slammed an SiS caffeine shot (150mg) and came back to life.

The rest of the day I was on fire. I knew we didn't have any chance of brining back the leader or even the top 10 so i just wanted to get to the finish as fast as possible. My legs were great and me and two other guys were doing 99% of the work. The other dudes were busted and just sitting in.

I took some really long hard pulls and at times would drop the group but I figured we'd be faster together so I never tired to attack as now it was just about finishing fast.

We rolled through the final checkpoint at mile 128. I had nother coke and pickle and we rolled. I was still feeling great and strong... and pulling hard. The same 3 of us were doing all the work. We scooped up a handful of riders that last 20 miles. With a mile to go we hit the pavement and it was all downhill throught a neighborhood. jake wells (one of the dudes who was doing the work with me) sat up as did i and said good job boys.... right then all the dudes who did no work attacked us! awesome.... I wasn't having any of it.

I know it's still bike racing but gravel is kind of different than road... or at least I thought it was. I just cruised it in. I wasn't gonna try to out sprint these guys for 15th place. I was there to exploit my fitness, ride hard, and have fun. mission accomplished.

The course was super hard. NONSTOP rollers. It was never flat. Hard to drop people though because every roller had an equal descent.... so guys, especially bigger guys could rip down and latch back on.

My training, fitness, and nutrition were spot on! I wish I would have had the good of legs at DK from miles 100-150.... would have been a totally different story.
