Crippler Gravel Race.
so hard and so fun. drove down with james early and it was drizzling the whole time and in 40s... and i didn't bring enough warm clothes. stopped at walmart in town and got some water proof hunting gloves and a buff... and used the wool socks we got in our race pack. forecast was partly cloudy and 68.. should have known better. it's colorado in the fall.
first few miles were on the road and were just in a big group and i was sitting and getting soaked. steady drizzle but i was warming up with my rain jacket on. once we made the turn on to phantom canyon climb (23.8 miles, 4067 ft of climbing) the pace quickened and i was easily moving around in the group. One guy (eventual winner) went apeshit and went way off the front. we let him go and soon enough i was in a group of five stomping up the hill with my teammate james.
good times up the climb with constant attacks from everybody which kept everybody honest. we popped one guy and were down to 4. a guy on a mountain bike (good choice for this course) kept throwing attacks. i could cover them but halfway up the climb i decided to just ride steady. another fast guy from the springs went with the mtb guy and james i did out own thing.
they got out of sight but 30' later at the top of the climb we caught them. sweet. i stopped to pee and everybody got a little gap on my but we were near the top. my hands were frozed because is started the race in my light mtb gloves. i couldn't feel my fingers but didn't want to stop and switch gloves.
it was sunny and rad at the summit but as soon as we hit the dirt going down it was foggy, wet, and cold. i couldn't feel my hands so it was pretty sketchy ripping down the muddy, rutted fireroad. I was with james but had to stop to put my glasses in my jersey. the road was so bumpy they wouldn't stay on my helmet. i fumbled around and james was gone. my hands have never been so cold. at the last aid station around mile 47 i had two dudes help me change my gloves. i couldn't do it myself.
i got rolling again and my hands were much warmer but still numb. around mile 50 i was finally getting feeling back and able to eat a gel. hadn't eaten in 90'. I rallied but was caught by a dude coming of the dirt and back onto the road. the last ~8-10 miles were on the road and we worked together hammering. we got really close to bringing james back (ahead of us by less than a minute) and we rode in together in 5th and 6th. i wasn't going to try to out sprint him after working so hard together.
for sure some of the most fun i've ever had racing my bike. this gravel racing is legit.... and i'm hooked. perfect blend of road and mountain bike racing. road tactics and mtb fun!
