Climbing 30:00 [3]

We climbed in Chile! (pared seca) Two great pitches - one of them wet though. 5.9 (5c?) at the upper sector and 5.10c (6a+/6b?) at the lower part. This 2nd one was beautyful.

Various (hiking) 30:00 [3]

Up to the wall and down again.

Various 5:00:00 [3]

Hiketd up to Cerro Arco Iris. First the path went up in thick rainforest. Sometimes very steep and with some fixed ropes. Then with a nice view further up on not very steep rockslabs. When we hit snow ~1h below the peak we turned around - without crampons and iceaxe it seemed not safe ebougg to go on.

Various (hiking) 4:00:00 [3]

Hiked up the Cochamo- valley to La Junta. Its compared with Yosemitee but way harder to access.
Very nice campground and good food at the refugio.

Various (sea kajaking) 4:00:00 [3]

At the last day, we paddled back to Puelche, where the road ends and where we got picked up. Dolphins again - so nice!

Various (sea kajaking) 1:50:00 [3]

At the official trip-restday, we decided to try to paddle upstreams from the lagune. With a big effort, we managed a very short distance - but fun.

Various (hiking) 1:00:00 [3]

Tried to get to the lake from our camp. Gave up because it was wet and green "bush-walking" and river-wading.

Sunday Dec 26, 2010 #

Various 4:00:00 [3]

To the next lagune with natural hot pools. Had the luck to see dolphins again. And sealions - but they are always at this place.

Saturday Dec 25, 2010 #

Various 3:00:00 [3]

See Kajak in a nice, lonely lagune. Saw sealions and dolphins.

Friday Dec 24, 2010 #

Various (sea kajaking) 2:30:00 [3]

See Kajak from Hornopiren to a nice hostal on a close Island. The hot pool was great.

Note

The last couple days we traveled south from Santiago to Puerto Varas. We stopped by coincidence at a place called Salto del Laja with a loveley waterfall (we even had a view of the fall from our room).
Here in Puerto Varas Patagonia starts and we will get into more remote areas. Don't expect too many updates from now on...
For the next six days we'll be sea-kayaking in Parque Pumalin. Google it, it's an interestin park!
The plan was then to continue on a ferry south to the Carretera Austral. But the ferry connection, which was announced to start up on the 15th of December did not start up. Welcome to Patagonia ;-)! So we took the opportunity and spend New Years in Valle Cochamo, the Yosemite of Chile, hopefully with some climbing. The difference to Yosemite is, that you have to hike 5h into the valley including a tyrollien passage. Google this as well, a very interesting place!
I wish you all Merry Christmas & a happy New Year!

Hiking from Jorges house (700m) up to Cerro Alto la Cruz (2550m). Leaving early was a good Idea because half of the uphill I could hike in the shade of the hill and higher up the temperatures were moderate. In the last third there was some easy climbing along the ridge, a lot of fun but you would not want to fall on these passages. My running shoes were not the ideal choice for this hike but my hiking boots will only arrive tomorrow :-))! Many nice view over Santiago all the tiime unfortunately my camera ran out of battery after a couple shots...
This somehow feels strange, on one hand you have a 6 million city and right next to it you have the andes going up to more than 3000m...

O-"Trainign" with Jorge at the Parque Metropolitano, a park in the middle of Santiago. It was one of the first maps he made and it's almost six years old. The vegetation was not up to date and the 10m contour lines made it even more challenging. However it was fun and nice to run on the map.

I ran with Jorge on anoter park map, again, just running around not orienteering. Half of the park was unfortunately closed due to a christmas fare, so it was a lot of zig zaging around.

Because the run in the park was only half an hour I decided to run back to Jorges house.

Note

What a great day. Yesterday Rodolfo (a friend I know from my time in the USA) picked me up at the airport and showed me the basics of Santiago.
Today he and his wife picked me up at the hostel and we drove to the coast. First we went to a place called Quintay. A gorgeouse beach which we had all for us alone! We walked about one hour along the beach and I even got a bit of bouldering in. Then we drove to the tiny port which had a hand full of very nice restaurants. Rodolfo knew which one we had to take and we had this perfect lunch. First an appetizer of baked shrimps and then a great grilled fish. What a treat!

Then we continued to Valparaiso. This is a very nice city on the sea with many houses built up along the surrounding hills. This would be a great place for sprint-o! We were taking an elevator up to a place with beautiful views and started wantering around the city. Once we got stopped by the police which said whe should turn around because we would enter a not so safe area...

After a yummy peach juice we went back to the car and drove over to the other side of the bay where a more modern beach town lies (Vina del Mar). This is the complete opposite of Valparaiso with high rise towers lining the beach front. We drove along the beach and took a short stroll before driving back to Santiago.

CSA - long - M21 E - (11/?)
Same terrain, mostly open, some controls in the green area. I made a few mistakes, the larger ones were on 16 and 18 where I lost probably 2-3' each.

It was raining during the whole run and the course overprint started to be washed away. On one control I was lucky that I was with another elite runner who was guiding me to the control and the second to the last control I did simply guess from the clue sheed where it was...

CSA - Middle - (15/27)
Similar terrain as yesterday but one area where it was green and dense and you had to navigate very carefully due to the low visibility. Search a couple controls a bit (probably 1' each) and made a mistake on leaving the area by not reading the map carefully and ending up following the wrong stream. This brought me more into the thick vegetation and I had to fight out again. Probably 2' lost there.

Temperature probably around 25°C and clouded sky, very nice compared to yesterday. Tomorrow a 13.6Km course is waiting, my goal is to survive it!

CSA - Sprint - MEQ - (13/32)
The sprint competition was in a very fast terrain with good visibility and runnability in the forest and some open areas. I made a very clean qualifying race giving 100% as I knew that it would be tough to qualify. Just made it as 13th out of 15 qualifiers.

CSA - Sprint - Final - (14/15)
Final in the same area, we even had 4 controls the same as in the qualifier...?
Made a mistake on the way to the last control. I was mentally already through and had almost caught the guy that started ahead of me and though "Why is he leaving in the wrong direction?". Well, he wasn't but I was and I lost probably half a minute.

Oh, and it was HOT! Certainly over 30°C some claimed 33°C. We didn't run in the hottest period but spent the whole day out there just lying around in the shade.

No maps today we'll only get them back on Sunday as I the middle and the long will be in the same area.

Campeonato Sul Americano de Orientação - Relay - Fepargo - H Adulto - (3/?)

They put me with two - apparently fast - guys into a relay team. I ran the last leg.

The comptetition was in an area where they raise trees, part of it was ok running but most was rather thick. There were many trails and open fields with houses, so in all it was rather easy. We also had very short distances.

After the first and the second leg we were fourth. I headed out and only passed one or two runners from the second leg. Made a "bigger" mistake on the 6th. The control was about 15m away from a trail and I ran along this trail and saw a guy leaving from a control. I went there, ralized that it was not mine (thanks to checking the number) and had to get out again, continue 30m and back in again to punch my control. I probably lost 30-45" there. Otherwise I only missed a couple of control that I did not see right away in the green.

My two coleagues were waiting for me in the finish chute and I understood from the speaker (I know that much Portugese!) that we were third. Appartently I had passed the third guy on the way to the first control where he made 3' mistake.

Fun competition and a good start into the Champs.

Run in Torres, a nice beach town where I spend a couple days to pass the time between Iguassu and the SA Champs. Ran along the beach where they had official distance markers on every lamp post (roughly every 50m). It was too hot for me, but it was a nice run anyway. Crossed over the river on a hanging bridge (where I was afraid to run, it was shaking so much) to the state of Santa Catarina, saw a fisherman in a tiny boat "rowing" like a gondoliere, saw dozends of clothes lying on the beach but no one there, it was probably from the rescue guards which were training (met them in the afternoon) and finally I met a guy riding a horse along the beach. Quite interesting what you see on a run in such an unknown place..

Climbing 30:00 [1]

Bouldering in the afternoon at the beach. Found a 10x3m crag with a nice landing so I could do some bouldering. Nothing too difficult, except for two lines (where one I could not do) but it was nice to climb a bit. Otherwise I saw many rusted bolts. Obviousle there were people climbing but I wouldn't trust those bolts.

Sneaked a run into my lazy (rainy) day at the Hotel before leaving Foz do Iguassu.
Same loop as usual.

In the afternoon I made a stroll through the local Zoo (free!) right beside my hotel. Nice!

Note

Iguassu, Argeninan side. Very impressive, you can get very close to the falls and have far more options than on the Brazilian side. Unfortunateley it rained almost all day on and off and I got soaked pretty bad. Nevertheless a nice day!
Due to the bad weather not so nice pictures, had to use mostly the small (waterresistant) camera.

Friday Dec 3, 2010 #

Note

The plan was to see the argentian side of the falls but there was a heavy thunderstorm in the morning and it looked like bad weather all day. So I decided to switch days and go and see the Itaipu dam today. Very impressive construction and a very good tour (the "special tour" with visiting the machine house and information about the construction of the dam and the technical background).

Nice trivia: the whole site is shared between Paraguay and Brazil, and the power is shared between those two countries. They have roughly 20 trubines, the paraguaian side works on 50Hz while the brazilian works on 60Hz. Because Paraguay only uses 8% of the whole power generated (to supply 90% of it's electricity need) it convertes the rest back to 60Hz and sells it to Brazil...?
More trivia: the amount of water flowing through one single tourbine is double of the amount of water flowing down the Iguassu Falls on an average day.
Last trivia: part of the generators were made by BBC (who still knows this company?).

Running 46:08 intensity: (43 @1) + (5:26 @2) + (14:24 @3) + (25:35 @4) 8.06 km (5:44 / km) +173m 5:10 / km

Thanks to the thunderstorm the temperature was much nicer today than two days ago. Similar route like last time, expcept the other way round and an additional loop in the beginning.

The extra loop turned out not to be worth it, got one foot stuck in soft red ground, now I have one red shoe and one white one...

Otherwise this really seems to be THE place to run, there were many runners and walkers on this loop despite all the traffic rushing by. You have to go abroad to really enjoy what you have back home ;-).
