Course 'one' and 'two' at BOK's Lake Johnson sprint, set by Joseph Huberman and Ruth Bromer. This was my first sprint race in over a year; I made a few mistakes my first time out, but was pretty clean on the second course. Very fun.

Note

Well, that was a little crappy. Post-race analysis reveals that I mp'ed one of my courses -- bummer. But there are a few things to vent about:

1. Control 55 and control 56 were both rootstocks (north side) and were 35 meters apart.

2. On my (correct) approach to 56, 55 was clearly visible and obvious off to my left. Gee; stupid me for punching it. These controls could only have been set and numbered as a trap, and there were no warnings in the course notes.

3. BOK end-of-race printout does not tell you if you mp. The download box and printer have no knowledge of the course you ran -- it just prints the controls that you punched. So you don't find out that you mp until days later.

Grumble.

Two laps of the Al Buehler trail: 1 mile hard, 1 mile easy, 2 miles hard, 1 mile easy, 1 mile hard. Perfect weather and a not-so-bad work out.

I had a new idea for a run at Umstead today: I would start at the south park gate at the Reedy Creek entrance, then get to the north gate at US-70 as quickly as possible, then to jog back easily to the south gate, along a different route than I took to get there. I took 57:34 to get to the north gate. I'm sure that I can do this faster in the future with a couple different route choices and/or if I'm willing to get my feet wet in Reedy Creek on the way out.

The second annual 'sustainability scavenger hunt' at UNC Chapel Hill. Basically a 1-hour campus score-O (12 controls). At each control, competitors had to read a placard about the University's sustainability efforts, and then answer a multiple choice question on their punch card in a unique colored pen (different colors at each control location.) I cleared the course in first place by quite a bit, but evidently did not realize that the multiple choice questions were not the simple easy questions typical of urban score-Os. Rather, they were hard; and the multiple choices had difficult distractors that forced a very close (and time consuming) reading of the placard. So I missed two questions. Oh brother.

I left pretty early, not finding out whether my 10 correct controls ended up placing.
