Field checking 3:30:00 [1] 7.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon II

More checking on the Eno River map, mostly the south side. So I can tell that this is going to become a thing. I had planned to map a large historically interesting slope in the central part of the map. It takes probably 30 minutes just to get there on foot. Of course, along the way, I see all sorts of things that need to go on the map and I spend a bunch of time updating other sections. By the time I get out to the planned location, I'm pretty tired and am not able to do much of it.

More mapping at Eno River. As I was heading back, I ran into a half-naked 60-something-year-old sunbathing in a clearing in the middle of the woods. He is the first human I have ever seen back there, several miles away from anything. His name is Coin. We chatted for a bit, and I found him to be quite a nice gentleman.

He was very close to the pit that I found a few weeks ago. Given Mr_Wonderful's request at the time, I took a blurry photo of it. As expected, it's hard to gauge the scale from the photo. I thought of asking Coin to pose next to it, but it seemed like he was out there for some solitude, and I didn't want to bother him any more. Anyway, here's the photo. The pit is about 2 meters deep. I don't think that you could ever put a bag at the bottom of it -- not too clear that people could get out.

Orienteering 53:33 [4] 4.3 km (12:27 / km)
shoes: Salomon II

Brown course at Grant Park, set by Steve Barnhart (MVOC). A great day for orienteering, and my first time back running on a map since the disastrous rogaine in VA. I felt good and had fun, keeping a good disposition even through a few dense patches of vegetation. It was not a technically difficult course, but it offered some nice route choices. I lost maybe one minute to nav errors, and a couple more minutes to sub-optimal route choice.

Field checking 5:00:00 [1] 7.0 mi (42:52 / mi)
shoes: Salomon II

Checking control sites at Umstead for my May 22 meet. Most looked good, although I spent a huge amount of time figuring out what to do with 3 or 4 of them. This should be my last visit there before I hang bags, and I'm really pleased with how things have panned out. In particular, the red course should be quite exceptional.
