BOK member Robert Enochs designed an unstreamered training course in Umstead south that concentrated on hill climbing. Navigationally, it was pretty simple -- most controls were hill tops. Very good training -- after about an hour, I was beat, and the steepest climbs were at the end.

Field checking 1:45:00 [1] 2.0 mi (52:30 / mi)
shoes: Salomon II

Pretty cruddy time mapping Cox Mt., undoing a handful of the things that I thought I had added correctly last week. Several things just not really lining up. Toying with the idea of using a GPS to help with this section.
5 PM

Trail running 20:00 intensity: (9:00 @2) + (11:00 @4) 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon II

A couple fairly slow repeats, up and down the mountain.

Field checking 1:45:00 [1] 2.5 mi (42:00 / mi)

Last day of field-checking the Carolina Friends School map. One more batch of OCAD edits, and then this one is in the books. It's a very good map, and it will be a shame if we never get a BOK event on it.

BOK 'Blue' course at Falls Lake, set by Patrick and Kelly Sears. These guys do a great job of setting thoughtful courses in a venue in which the map has gotten way way too out-dated. Fun course, but frustrating with all of the unmapped logging trails and badly mapped vegetation -- these really add a huge element of luck. A couple of times, I luckily found an unmapped logging trail that took me close to my control -- other times I only discovered way too late that there was such a trail. Vegetation could be very dense, and by the last third of the race, I was really sick of it and just wanted to finish. A few bags were slightly misplaced, but no real problems with navigation -- just some frustration at the map and the vegetation.

Control. pickup 1:15:00 [3] 3.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

Mad Otter Goatgaine at Otter Creek. Excellent event, well-planned and fun. It was so nice to run for 8 hours on a 1:10 map, in a venue without ridiculous climbs (e.g., Stokesville). Thanks to the normal orienteering terrain, I was able to keep moving well the whole time, albeit at a very slow jog by the end. Navigation was solid except for one 3- or 4-minute mistake on the third leg of the goat where Jim Benton and Aaron Smith passed me. I crossed paths with Aaron several times thereafter.

I lost my punchcard after two controls into the score-O portion. Thankfully, Bruce was forgiving, trusted my story, and gave me credit for the controls I punched. But when the results come out, I should probably have an asterisk by my name.

Orienteering 1:06:00 [3] 5.1 mi (12:56 / mi)

Green course at Otter Creek. Nice course, set by Bruce Moore. No real mistakes, except for a bad route decision from 1 to 2, made while I was still fresh, and before I had adjusted to the contour interval.

I won't be around the Triangle this weekend, so I asked Ian Shields for a sneak-peek of the red course that he is setting at Umstead on Sunday. Pretty good course, with some good route choices. I probably ran the first 8 legs well under 10 minutes per kilometer, but then really ran out of steam and struggled physically on the remaining six legs, especially on the uphills. The old trusty Salomon's were completely spent and worthless, and it motivated me to stop at REI on the way home to buy a new pair.

More mapping at the top of Cox Mt., this time with an extra neon green shirt to serve as a marker from a distance -- very helpful.

COK, Kings Mountain NMP, Red course, set by Walter Siegenthaler. Excellent course design and setting, great map, and a great day to be out. The quality of the course was on par with an A-meet, at about 1/20th the cost and none of the fuss.

Mapping north of the saddle at Cox Mt., Eno River SP. It was so much easier to map this side of the saddle because there is an enormous rootstock at the top of the hill that is visible for at least a hundred meters from all directions. Placement of most of the newly-mapped features could be verified with respect to this rootstock. No such luck on the south side, which is still a mess of about 30 badly-mapped cairns and rootstocks. I need to bring a bright orange shirt next time, and hang it on a tree at the top of the hill, to mimic the same benefit that I had on the other side.

Trail running 26:41 [3] 2.5 mi (10:40 / mi)

Nice run on the Cox Mt. trail at Eno River.
