11 AM

Trail running 1:07:36 intensity: (37:36 @3) + (30:00 @4) 6.5 mi (10:24 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Surprisingly good run on Company Mill trail, Umstead SP. The humidity was way down, and even though I was tired, I was able to keep a pretty solid pace.

3 PM

Trail running 58:17 [3] 5.0 mi (11:39 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Slow jog on the west side of Carolina North, with my map. No big problems with the map noted. Dew point was 78.

Field checking 3:30:00 [1] 5.0 mi (42:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

I'm setting an advanced BOK meet at Lake Crabtree in late August, and because I'll be out of town for a bunch of August, I thought it best to check-in with the place today. I shifted around the locations of about half of my planned controls (who the hell keeps mapping these 0.4m knolls?), and noted that the west side of the map needs a big overhaul because they have put in a bunch of new bike trails. But mostly, it was a pretty successful day out. If I don't have time to get back there, I can just erase all of the old (and no-longer-existant) bike trails off the map, and warn people not to rely on the new trails.

10 AM

Field checking 2:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (48:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Touching-up the north section, adding about 400m of new trails and 100m of disturbed ground. Nice to be working a section of the map where everything fits together so perfectly!
12 PM

Trail running 22:52 [4] 2.5 mi (9:09 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Hard run around the Pumpkin loop, quite hot.

1 PM

Field checking 45:00 [1] 1.0 mi (45:01 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Touched up the problem I found last week
2 PM

Trail running 59:18 [3] 5.5 mi (10:47 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Slow run on the single track at Carolina North, map in hand. Deja vu with last week's run, when I found a handful of unmapped lines of disturbed ground. I'll have to get back out there again, hopefully for one last time.

3 PM

Field checking 45:00 [1] 1.0 mi (45:01 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Tried to check out some disturbed ground that I had missed on my first attempt, but didn't get too far because the map is somewhat screwed up here. I need to clear my head and come back out another day.
4 PM

Trail running 22:00 [4] 2.4 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Nice run around the pumpkin loop. I had my long O-pants on from being in the woods, and the temperature was in the upper 80's, but it felt really comfortable and relatively cool. Perhaps I'm acclimating to the conditions here.

Hike 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

I checked out Cedarock park, in Alamance County, NC to see if it was worth mapping. It probably is -- it has a nice variety of vegetation openness, and enough trails to set white/yellow courses but not so much to make advanced course design difficult. Fairly good relief features. I was disappointed, though, with how thick the woods are. Almost everything I saw would be light or medium green -- very little open woods.

12 PM

Field checking 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Far southeast corner of the CN map -- lots of pavement and fences.
2 PM

Trail running 46:00 [3] 4.5 mi (10:13 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Slow jog at Carolina North, with my map. Ran past a couple unmapped lines of disturbed ground. Grrr. . .I thought I was done with all that crap.

Tuesday Jul 21, 2015 #

2 PM

Field checking 2:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

More work on the CN map. I think I more-or-less finished up all of the lines of disturbed ground.

Monday Jul 20, 2015 #

2 PM

Field checking 3:00:00 [1] 5.0 mi (36:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Working on the Eno River map because I had time to kill in Durham. The mapping was made more difficult by the fact that I 'corrected' for declination in the wrong direction, and the by fact that I printed my map at the wrong scale. So instead of my compass being 9 degrees off, it was 18; and I was field checking with a 1:10000 map instead of a 1:5000 one. The former problem was totally my fault, but the scale problem seems to be some unknown issue with how OCAD is talking to Condes.

Orienteering 34:19 [4] 3.8 km (9:02 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclte

Spriddle at Bond Park. With 25 controls in 3.8km on a 1:5000 map, things came really fast and furious. Very fun. I made very few execution errors -- just a couple of route choices that could have been better, and a gradual slowing in the heat and humidity.
12 PM

Field checking 1:30:00 [1] 2.5 mi (36:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

After the meet, I went over to Carolina North for a bit more mapping. I had hoped to finish the lines of disturbed ground on the west side of the map, but the heat and humidity forced me back early.

Thursday Jul 16, 2015 #

1 PM

Field checking 1:30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (1:00:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

After a very brief hiatus, I got back to work on the CN map. I think that I have finished all of the disturbed ground on the east side of the map.
3 PM

Trail running 25:00 [4] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

fairly easy jog around the pumpkin loop.

12 PM

Orienteering 1:28:30 [4] 9.0 km (9:50 / km)
shoes: O-RocII

CVOC 90-minute Score-O at South Pocohontas State Park. Very fun event, but the heat was a little debilitating. They ran this as a "choose your own" bike-O or foot-O, so to accommodate the MTBO, it was basically a long yellow course. I'm not complaining -- a longer run was just what I needed. I think I won the foot contest, getting 20 out of 23 controls.

11 AM

Field checking 2:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (48:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Wrapping up the disturbed ground on the east side, feeling pretty good about the map quality.

Thursday Jul 9, 2015 #

12 PM

Field checking 1:30:00 [1] 2.5 mi (36:00 / mi)

Elementary school, plus a couple of nearby random places that I missed a few weeks ago.

Wednesday Jul 8, 2015 #

1 PM

Field checking 2:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (40:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Mapped more cursed lines of disturbed ground
3 PM

Trail running 21:50 [4] 2.6 mi (8:24 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Another attempt at a hard-ish run on the Pumpkin loop. Better time than Monday.

Monday Jul 6, 2015 #

1 PM

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 3.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Mapped probably a total of one mile of disturbed ground on the east side of the map. My guess is that after four of five more of these mapping sessions, I'll have all of the disturbed ground mapped. Came home to good news from the elementary school principal -- she's fine with me mapping her campus.
3 PM

Trail running 23:27 [4] 2.6 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Tried to do a hard run around the pumpkin loop, but the humidity slowed me down quite a bit.

Sunday Jul 5, 2015 #

1 PM

Hike 1:30:00 [1] 5.0 mi (18:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclte

Hiked at Eno River with Noga, making minor map updates as we went.

Thursday Jul 2, 2015 #

11 AM

Hike 2:20:00 [1] 5.0 mi (28:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

I was in Durham this morning, so I went by Eno River SP. In response to our mapper's refusal to map the place, our club has decided to hold an advanced meet out there using just the basemap (and any minimal information that can be filled in from aerial photos). This way, more club members can be informed about whether we should keep trying to map the park. After spending a couple hours off trail today, I'm pretty confident that I can set up a fun event for the club.

Wednesday Jul 1, 2015 #

Field checking 2:30:00 [1] 4.0 mi (37:30 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Finished-up the OWASA corridor along the creek.
