Trail running 35:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:45 / mi)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Nice run at Western/Peffer. Time and distance estimated, but it definitely felt brisker than my typical trail shuffle.

ICO's 2-hour Halloween Score-O. Such a fun event; and I love the format; and the park (Eagle Creek East) is perfect for it. I mostly ran okay, with a few relatively minor mess-ups; although I lost a lot of time at a control that I never found. I definitely need to work on not letting one bad control affect my enjoyment of the event so much.

Trail running 40:00 [3] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Nice easy jaunt around Hueston Woods, this time closer to the lodge, and with an eye for possible control locations and areas in need of map updates

Event: Pumpkingaine

Trail running 40:00 [4] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Very hilly trail run at Pike Lake SP, after the Pumkingaine, trying to salvage some sort of rigorous workout.

Orienteering 2:40:00 intensity: (2:00:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) + (10:00 @4) 6.0 mi (26:40 / mi)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Horrible times at the COAR Pumkingaine. I navigated quite solidly, though I only really spiked one of the 6 controls I visited. The rest were sloppy, but no real major problems. (Although at least twice, the sloppiness came from a slightly Khrushcheved control placement.) I had wanted to use this event to practice being on the move for 6 hours, but was very disappointed that between all of the chest-high greenbriar, the dangerously slippery craggy terrain, and the lack of viable route choices along trails, I didn't really get to run or jog much at all. It was just a lot of time fighting vegetation -- not deftly moving through the woods. After 2.5 hours, I ran into a runner from COO who had lost his map. So I gave him mine, quit the course, and went on a trail run.

I was aware throughout much of the race that it would have been a much better time with a partner. It will be nice when Rob gets back.

Orienteering 1:12:29 [3] 5.9 km (12:17 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Ran Mike's red course at MUNA from 28 Sept. Fairly decent run, although I got overly-annoyed at the honeysuckle on 6/7 and 7/8. (I'm pretty sure that there is not much white open runnable woods between the deer exclosure and #7.) This pre-disposed me to stay out of the woods on the long legs that followed, and on 9/10 probably took a sub-optimal route choice to the left, on the trail, and through Cook's field. The route choice made 10, 11, 12 quite a dogleg, and I figured afterwards that Mike had probably intended most people on their way to 10 to go right, hug the edge of the cornfield, and drop down alongside the horse pastures. Perhaps that would have been a quicker route; but given the recent rain, I didn't want to take the chance that there would be a lot of muck along the edge of the corn fields. I remember setting courses out here last year and everyone complaining about the long leg that went through the corn field. I thought it amusing that Mike's very first leg offered that exact same choice. No complaints this time though; the corn field was definitely something to avoid. Still saw quite a few elephant tracks approaching some of the controls.

Orienteering 1:33:30 [3] 7.6 km (12:18 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

A very nice red course set by Mike. Tons of route choices allowed me to avoid thick vegetation. It was very nice to have viable un-vegitated options. The EF map is also still generally very good, and one can (for the most part) trust how it depicts vegetation.

Orienteering 30:29 [3] 3.2 km (9:32 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Cooled-down with an easy yellow course, also lots of fun. I was quite tired (mentally and physically) from the red course before, and several controls were not trivial for me. I probably made a minute or two of errors.
3 PM

Control. pickup 2:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (40:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

And then the real fun began. Picking-up 9 advanced controls and 3 water stations with Skylar Hertel. The experience gave me an idea for a new and very demanding orienteering format: kid-O. After finishing a long course, competitors are sent back out for a short but navigationally demanding loop -- this time with an 8 year old kid in tow. At the same time as the orienteers are competing to be the fastest, the kids are also competing to see who can slow down the orienteers the most. It could be a viable way of getting more kids introduced to the sport.
