Orienteering 3:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)

Sortie #1 on the SAR mock incident. I served as navigator in our crew, and our mission was to sweep and sign cut a few areas and to look for a couple of geocaches. (The missing subjects were trail runners who were supposed to have been checking out some geocaching sites.) The incident designer was supposed to have put clues from the mock victims in these geocaches, but he was unable to find them. Our crew, however, found them fairly handily!

This was my first time geocaching, even if it was inadvertently. It was fun, but involved way too much hunting for a small object in a known location, as if a course setter purposfully hid or buried a control. The fun-ness of the activity doesn't approach orienteering

Orienteering 3:30:00 [1] 5.5 mi (38:11 / mi)

Night sortie on the mock SAR event. I again served as navigator, and did so pretty cleanly. Our crew found several valid clues pointing right to the missing subject, but there wasn't time to follow them fully. Another crew would have been sent out after us to follow-up, but weather called things off (and the subject expired). I do think that if this had been a genuine incident, another crew would have been sent out and the subject would have been found.

NTOA's Dillo-Goat at LBJ National Grasslands. Very fun event, like all goats, and my first time orienteering in TX. Ran with another fellow through #9, and we were joined from 5-8 by a third. But I ended up dropping them both, took a very helpful skip, and won the event.

Note

A few months ago while scouting control sites for a meet at Umstead, I noticed that the map did not seem to be perfectly aligned with magnetic north. It was about 3 degrees off. I am now pretty sure that the source of the issue is secular variation -- westward drift in magnetic declination. The map was first drafted in 1982, when the declination at Umstead was about 6 degrees. Today it is closer to 9. I wonder whether any other important US maps have similar (or worse) problems with this.

Strikes me as an issue on which cedarcreek might have some insight.

Slow jog out to get the 6 most distant controls. Very tired.

Orienteering 1:10:30 [3] 6.5 km (10:51 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

BOK, Umstead south, red course. A nice course with quite a bit of climb and tons of route choice. With one exception, I'm pretty pleased with my route choices and execution. Perhaps a bit too warm (70 degrees) but otherwise a perfect day to be out.
2 PM

Orienteering 19:16 [4] 2.1 km (9:10 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Inspired by some of the recent OCIN results, I decided to get back out and run a yellow course as a sprint. It was fun, but I was very tired, and probably lost at least 30 seconds toward the end due to fatigue-induced idiocy
