Trail running 50:00 [4] 6.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
shoes: MudClaw I

Brisk run around MUNA. My first 1.5 miles were much faster than usual because I popped-out on the trail about 50 meters in front of the MU track (distance) team. I held them off for 1.5 miles before our paths diverged -- mine east over Harker's run, theirs continuing north along it. In truth, I wouldn't have done the loop over Harker's run if they hadn't been about to pass me. So I got an extra mile in, and avoided the embarrassment of being passed. Win-win.

Orienteering 57:15 [4] *** 4.5 km (12:43 / km)
spiked:17/25c shoes: MudRock IV

A very fun green course set by Mike. It is probably impossible to put an honest-to-goodness advanced course in this park because of its size and trail network. Probably most of the controls on this course could have been on an orange course -- there was frequently a catching feature behind the control. So this was a fun opportunity for practicing some precision orienteering without too much danger of getting seriously off-course. It was steeper and much more tiring than I expected, and Mike did a masterful job of squeezing an interesting, thoughtful, and challenging course into this small map.

I ran fairly cleanly until #18 which I seriously screwed-up. I had to attack it three times, even though on my first approach to it, I saw Bill Swift leaving it. All I had to do was go where he was coming from. But at that point, I had misinterpreted the map, and was mistakenly looking for a significant tree rather than a rootstock. So I stupidly continued north until I could see the parking lot.

Run along Acton Lake; the MLK Day streamers were out, and I did pass a group on that hike. A nice day to be out.

Field checking 5:00:00 [1] 8.5 mi (35:18 / mi)

Setting controls at MUNA. I'm 90% sure that it's deer who grab my streamers. If 12 inches of streamer is flapping in the breeze, it may look somewhat tasty, especially in the middle of winter. About 5 streamers had been nibbled down to a couple inches, with the remaining piece not far away, presumably spit-out soon after biting off.

Orienteering race 1:59:15 [4] 10.0 mi (11:56 / mi)
shoes: MudClaw I

ICO's 2-hour score-O at Eagle Creek. I felt like I ran well, and I liked the park and the map quite a bit. The map has held-up surprisingly well for being over 10 years old, and much of the 1st and 2nd green is actually quite runnable. My new shoes (Mudclaw) were excellent -- perhaps the best treads I have ever had.

I determined beforehand that it wouldn't be possible for me to clear the course in 2 hours, so I purposefully neglected controls 29, 30, 5, and 4. I made a couple of minor mistakes on #2 and #6 at the end that cost me a couple of points, but mostly my navigation was pretty good.

My route: 11, 12, 13, 20, 19, 21, 26, 28 (a bone-headed control placement), 27, 25, 23, 24 (an even bigger bone-headed control placement that was fun for no one, and could have seriously injured a competitor), 22, 18, 17, 16, 15, 10, 9, 1, (overshot #2 and gave up on it), 3, went half-way to 6 and bailed for time.

Too bad the course-setter didn't attend OCIN's clinic a few weeks ago --there were quite a few sloppy placements and control descriptions. But all in all, it was a very fun event, and I'm eager to give it another shot next year.

Orienteering 1:17:33 [4] 6.7 km (11:34 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

I found out pretty early that I was more tired from the night before than I thought. I navigated quite cleanly, but regret a few route choices. I went way too far left from 7 to 8, and took the long trail option from 8 to 9. Both of those decisions cost me some time, I'm sure (although I might have floundered on 9 without a clear attackpoint). I lost a lot of time on #20, stupidly going through the 3rd green to the north of the control. This is the third year in a row that I have made a really dumb error on one of the last few controls on this course.

I really like the sprint/middle feel at the end of a longer course. Although I often fall victim to stupid mistakes, it's a great chance to reward good navigation and people who can keep their wits in oxygen debt.
