Orienteering 1:10:51 [3] 7.0 km (10:07 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Very fun night-O score course at Rentschler. My biggest mistake was early, from 1 to 6, where I spent way too long looking for the trail. In retrospect, if I had planned it better, I might have done 1 before 2 (I started 4-3-2-1) and use 2 as an easy attackpoint for 6. But of course I would have had no idea in the planning stage that I would have that much trouble finding the trail to 6.

I took a very stupid route from 15 to 18, and wasted a bunch of time attacking 16 from the east (I didn't see the north-south stream on the map until I was several meters up it.) Otherwise a fairly clean run.

Trail running 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

MUNA -- trail running to and from potential control sites
2 PM

Field checking 1:45:00 [1] 1.0 mi (1:45:01 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Checking control sites at MUNA. There are a couple of very nice potentially technical areas here, but unfortunately I'll only be able to use them sparingly for the January TROL meet. The map is several years old, and the vegetation changes have been extensive enough that it wouldn't be fair to set too many controls there. I don't have the time or the ability to update the map too accurately, either; and if I did, it would be out-dated in a year. Hrmph.

Trail running 59:00 [3] 7.5 mi (7:52 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Slow run around MUNA

Nice run by Acton Lake

Trail running 45:00 [3] 4.0 mi (11:15 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Easy run around MUNA, punctuated by annoying forrays into the honesuckle to scout control locations
12 PM

Field checking 45:00 [1] 1.0 mi (45:01 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Checking locations at MUNA. I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of runnable woods, the abundance of honesuckle -- not all mapped -- and the state of the map, which seems somewhat outdated here and there

Road running 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Easy jog home from a friend's house after lending her our car.

Control. pickup 2:45:00 [2] 4.5 mi (36:40 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Picking up the last controls at EF. Many thanks to Ben Hart who made it possible to finish control pickup completely today. Goodbye East Fork. I shan't be setting courses in you for quite a while.

Given all the moaning and grumbling from competitors about the muddy conditions on Sunday, it sounds pretty snotty to say that, in fact, Sunday was the driest and most runnable day out there this week. But it's true.

Hike 52:00 [4] 3.0 mi (17:20 / mi)

Steady hike with 6 gallons of water on my back, out to two BillyPig controls in the woods. I knew that I would have to make this hike when I designed these courses, and I looked forward to it. However, I did not plan on having to do it the morning of the race. Due to the sub-freezing temperatures, I stocked the water controls on Sunday instead of setting the white course. I'm glad no one pestered the white course on Saturday.

6 PM

Control. pickup 25:00 [2] 1.9 mi (13:09 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Picking up most of the white course and a bit of the yellow. Had to leave a couple dozen controls in the woods because of nightfall and fatigue.

Saturday Dec 17, 2011 #

Control. pickup 15:00 [1] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Patagonia trail runners

Very light control pickup at OCIN's course setting clinic.

Field checking 8:00:00 [1] 12.0 mi (40:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Billy Pig prep. Trails are still horribly muddy, and only drying out slowly. There are several very nice looking control locations out there (in my opinion); and after visiting them each several times, I definitely know which two I would skip!

Field checking 4:20:00 [1] 6.0 mi (43:20 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Started setting controls for the BillyPig, and for the first time it was impossible to avoid a wet foot crossing. The stream should be significantly lower by Sunday, though. The hills and spurs will probably still be very slick, though.

The downside of getting most of your controls streamered two months early is that about half of them are gone by the time you set controls. Crap. Who the hell is removing streamers in the middle of the woods?

Trail running 45:00 [3] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Nice run around MUNA -- looking forward to setting courses here next year

Orienteering race 1:17:00 [4] 5.8 km (13:17 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Fantastically fun course at MUM, set by cedarcreek. I hurt myself badly on an unmapped fence near #3, and limped through several subsequent controls. Other than that, the course was a blast.

Field checking 1:45:00 [1] 3.0 mi (35:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Checked stream levels at East Fork, and scouted out a few alternative control locations if the water is too high. Despite all of the recent rain, the water was surprisingly low, so I'm pretty sure we'll be able to stick with my original design.
