1 PM

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 2.5 mi (54:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Nearly done with the lines of disturbed ground on the west side of the map.
3 PM

Trail running 36:18 [3] 4.0 mi (9:05 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Nice run along the creek, a bit faster than usual pace.

Field checking 2:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (48:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

I finally think that I got a grip on one of the confusing areas at Carolina North. I also think that I have finally finished walking/mapping all of the trails. Next step will be all of the linear piles of disturbed ground.
2 PM

Trail running 42:00 [3] 4.2 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Nice jog at Carolina North, northern section

Trail running 1:15:00 [3] 6.5 mi (11:32 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Slow run at Carolina North, with map. Much more tiring than I anticipated.

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 3.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclte

I got the middle school campus all checked-out, and relatively quickly (still waiting on approval from the elementary and high schools). I'm continually impressed at how much campus mapping can be done from the aerials. Very little needed to be changed -- just things here and there added or adjusted. Pretty hot out -- 108 degrees on the car thermometer when I got back.

Orienteering 1:51:57 [3] 7.3 km (15:20 / km)
shoes: Salomon

Ran the first red course ever designed and run at Carolina North. Seemed like a lot more than 7.3 km, and my time was really slow, but everything looks like it's the right scale in Condes. Maybe the heat just slowed me down more than I realized. A few nicely designed legs, but definitely more than a few that need to be re-designed.

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 2.5 mi (54:00 / mi)

Nailing down the end of the old runway. Nice area.

Trail running 1:08:33 [3] 6.0 mi (11:26 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Slow jog on the newly re-routed Loblolly trail at Umstead. Car thermometer read 102 back in the parking lot; good thing I was mostly in the woods!

Field checking 2:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (48:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclte

More mapping at CN. I returned to yesterday's very confusing section of the map, and made a little headway with it. However, it's still not all fitting together nicely here, and more work will definitely be necessary.

Trail running 50:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Very slow jog at Carolina North
2 PM

Field checking 1:15:00 [1] 1.5 mi (50:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Trying to rectify a few places that looked fishy on my run. I'm happy with most of the changes, but still confused by a small area. I'll check over it yet again sometime this summer.

Field checking 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

More mapping at CN

Orienteering 57:29 [3] 3.8 km (15:08 / km)
shoes: O-RocII

Farsta relay at Falls Lake, set by Ian Shields. Ian did a really good job setting this up, fighting an aging map, a lot of thick vegetation, and a lot of heat. A well-set course, and a lot of fun.
3 PM

Control. pickup 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: O-RocII

Picking up Ian's far southern controls

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 3.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc

An excellent mapping session in the very southwest corner of the Carolina North map. Definitely a feature-rich area of the map.

Trail running 50:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Very slow jog at Eno River SP; I hadn't been there for quite a while. After cedarcreek and I worked so hard getting basemap materials for Eno River to the BOK mapper, and after getting park permission and the mapper's commitment, he suddenly bailed and declared the park to be a bad venue for orienteering. So today I paid careful attention to the suitability of the park for orienteering. I have to admit that our mapper has a point; it is fairly boring especially given all of its climb. It would be a challenge to design any sort of technically challenging course. But we'll never find a park as interesting as Umstead around here, and I think it's important for the club to have a larger variety of maps. I'll still try to push for mapping it and getting it on our schedule once or twice a year, if only for a change of pace.

Note

I had a great meeting with the forest manager at Carolina North. Although he is a bit concerned about too much off-trail use, he seems very accommodating and easy to work with. I had to teach him the difference between hashers and orienteers! I got his approval for a low-key event in September, and if all goes well we can get a new regular venue on the BOK calendar.

Field checking 1:20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (40:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc

Checking out yet more trails at Carolina North. I haven't measured them, but I'm estimating that there are over 50 miles worth of trails on this 1000 acre map.

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 3.5 mi (38:34 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

Field checking the far southern portion of my map; found a ton of new mountain bike trails. I would have gone for a jog afterwards, but have been suffering for a week or so from early stages of plantar fascitis. I'll try to nip this ailment in the bud by wearing cushier shoes and running less frequently for a while.

12 PM

Field checking 2:15:00 [1] 2.5 mi (54:00 / mi)
shoes: O-RocII

Field checking some not-so-pleasant areas of Carolina North -- viz., some fairly thick vegetation around the lake.

Orienteering 1:00:18 [3] 5.5 km (10:58 / km)
shoes: O-RocII

Umstead West, re-run of last November's red course, set by (I think) Artem. Nice run, and especially nice to be forest orienteering in the early evening -- such a rarity. I avoided most of the mistakes that I made in November (at least one of which had been egregious -- going from #5 to #8) and felt pretty strong physically. The features that I encountered coming out of #2 made me think that I missed #2, an obvious danger when going out with no bags in the woods. But I figure that the amount of time that I save by going to a wrong feature is probably about the same as the amount of time I lose by standing right next to where the bag would be and verifying my location.

Orienteering 1:11:33 [3] 5.0 km (14:19 / km)
shoes: O-RocII

I re-ran Ken. Hanson's red course from 25 January in Umstead south. An interesting course, featuring two controls that are visited twice and one that's visited three times. As I ran today, a lot of memories came back, including all of the mistakes I made in January. With one exception, I pretty much repeated all of my mistakes again today. By the time I got to #15, I was pretty frustrated. So I just called it quits and headed in. Pretty disappointing run.

Trail running 1:10:00 [3] 7.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: O-RocII

Nice run in misty conditions at Carolina North. Went to the westernmost section of the map to which I had never been, and found that the park's online version of the trail map there was impressively accurate. There is definitely some vegetation that will need to get mapped, but the trail mapping relative to the contours is in surprisingly good shape.

Carolina North, with my map. Several trails need some slight adjustments.
