Field checking 5:30:00 [1] 10.0 mi (33:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

More time in the field for the Bubba goat; a pretty good day. Umstead park management approved our permits for both the Saturday and Sunday events (18 and 19 Oct). It's looking like I'll be setting the Saturday event, too, which I will turn into a declining score-O. We won't need SI for it -- only pads of paper -- which will enable me to get some of the goat controls out early. This in turn, should give me some time on Saturday afternoon to spend with Ben and Stephanie, who are coming down for the weekend of festivities.

Orienteering 1:57:17 [3] 8.8 km (13:20 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc

Blue course at Umstead. If someone sat down to design an 8.8 km course with as much climb as possible at Umstead, they could not have done more than today's course. Very grueling -- probably more climb than the goat will have next month. All in all, there were probably two too many legs for me, as I could only stagger to the last two controls. Perhaps if there had been water out on the course, I could have rejuvenated enough to finish a bit stronger.

My navigation was unusually solid, with no real flubs. I got quite frustrated at #8, a gully junction, which I approached pretty directly, and spiked perfectly. I stood probably 4 meters from the flag, on the spur overlooking the juction, and didn't see the bag. So I went to the next gully over, and of course didn't find it there. I approached the correct gully again, this time from a different direction, and again probably stood 2-3 meters from the bag without seeing it. Explored another ditch in the other direction before coming back to the correct one for a third time. This time I saw the bag, but only after having wasted at least 5 minutes.

Field checking 1:00:00 [1] 1.0 mi (1:00:01 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Finished surveying my 400m backyard track. Thanks to my lack of precision and the fractal nature of the terrain, it's actually going to be about a 402 meter track. Once training starts on it, I'm sure that I'll find 2 meters to shave-off of it.

Orienteering 52:52 [2] 4.5 mi (11:45 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc

Line-O at Lake Crabtree. Very fun, but not super confidence-building. The line to follow took so many little turns, and took so many detours -- and there were no controls anywhere to be seen on any of these twists and turns. By the time I finished, I assumed that I had missed a bunch of controls; but I ended up getting them all. Very nice format for a race, and a nicely laid-out course by Artem.

Field checking 3:15:00 intensity: (3:00:00 @1) + (15:00 @3) 6.0 mi (32:30 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Checking control sites for the Bubba goat. Not a particularly stellar day in the field -- a few too many frustrations. Looks like COK will not come through with a set of loaner controls for the goat. BOK president is suggesting postponing the goat, an idea that I'll oppose.

Started surveying and putting in stakes for a 400m trail circuit (one big loop) that I'm constructing in the woods behind my house. Quite a long way to go before this project is complete, but if all goes as planned, it will be super-cool.

I'm starting to see today that directing the Bubba-goat will be a much bigger headache than anticipated. BOK doesn't really have enough controls for the events we want to offer that weekend. The latest plan is for me to add white and yellow courses to the goat, meaning that we'll need to borrow even more controls. Most people seem to be expecting a course with no controls that are above orange-level, which disappoints my design aspirations. And now I'm finding out that I may need to create and print t-shirts for finishers.

Orienteering 2:15:00 [1] 3.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

CVOC Paddle-O at Dutch Gap, with Noga. A great place for such an event -- a lot of interesting history, shipwrecks, labyrinthine passageways, etc. The really terrible map couldn't spoil all of the fun, but the fact that my compass was always about 20-degrees off, in conjunction with the bad map started making me a bit too grumpy by the end. Still a very fun event and worth the drive.

6 miles on the Al Buehler trail in Durham. I wanted to run hard-easy-hard-easy-hard-easy, but instead it went hard-easy-okay-easy-slow-pathetic. Still too hot to run well.

Trail running 45:00 [3] 4.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Slow jog at Carolina North forest. Uncomfortably hot, which slowed me down considerably by the end.

Road running 40:00 [3] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Very sluggish jog around the neighborhood. Good news is that I found a viable way to connect McGowan road to Indian Orchard, creating a nice looping possibility and a bit of a forest run from my house. The new route goes through two private lots, but neither have settlements on them, and it seems unlikely that anyone would mind or know about me slipping through it from time to time.
