Easy jog at HW. I wanted to get over to MUNA and finish the 2010 BillyPig course, but just didn't have the time. Hopefully, I'll get around to it next week.

OLOU's 3-hour Score-O at Cave Creek; coursetter Jim Carter. Looking at the 1:5000 map, I figured before the race that its 35 controls could maybe be cleared in an hour. But the vegetation was very nasty in places, so 80-90 minutes would have been a good feasible winning time. I think that Aaron Smith finished in about that timeframe, and I finished second, quite a bit slower. I spiked nearly all of the controls, except for two, which cost me quite a bit of time.

OLOU 3-hour Score-O at Rough River; coursetter: Ken Kling. Fun course, and a great day to be out. Relatively easy control placements made for a pretty fast course, although a few controls required a bit more bushwhacking than one would normally want. Tons of poison ivy. I cleared the course in just under two hours, and sort of won. At least no one else cleared it faster than I did. But on the other hand, I also sort of cheated. I only realized after finishing that Ken's "don't cross the highway" rule applied everywhere, and I had crossed it a couple times, innocently, at places where it was very safe to cross. I realize now that the rule was in the posted course notes, which I hadn't read. I only heard Ken announce it about a minute before the start, after I had already planned my route, and I thought that it only applied to crossing the road near the dam. Just a misunderstanding that didn't detract from the fun of the event.

Re-ran the first half of the 2010 BillyPig, Western Campus & Peffer Park, coursesetter, Adam White. Time and distance estimated. This time, I kept my feet underneath me when I crossed the creek; although the creek was fairly high, and it was quite impossible to stay dry. A very nice course; I had forgotten some of its features. Most legs were around orange level difficulty (which I think is fine for a goat race). The venue is relatively small and feature-rich, and has a pretty extensive trail network. So it's difficult to make a navigationally challenging leg. So what made the course really nice was that most legs offered a lot of route possibilities.
I think that Billy Pig's long lost coffin is again lost.

BOK meet at Umstead South; Red course. Wonderful to be out orienteering on a red course -- probably my first one since April. Time and distance estimated. I got stung by over a dozen yellowjackets, which seriously confused and disoriented me on one of the legs; but most of the other legs were navigationally pretty solid. Great day to be out; not much to complain about.
