Orienteering race 37:16 [5] *** 4.7 km (7:56 / km)
spiked:17/18c

A great middle course set by Mike on Western campus. It started out like so much of a sprint, and I knew the area so well that I used most of my energy on the first half of the course. I was much slower for the second half -- mostly just fatigue from not being in great shape.

The course was really fun, and I made only a few mistakes. I don't think that I ever looked at my compass, and there were many legs for which I only looked at the map once. On #17, for example, I thought that the trail option added way too much distance, so I ran through the woods, trying to aim-off to the right. I figured that I would see the new deer exclosure as I hit the east-west trail, then would take a quick left on the trail and hit the control on the cairn. Probably because I never looked at the map again and never looked at my compass, I drifted way left, even left of the control, despite my plan to aim right. When I hit the trail, never having seen the deer exclosure, I thought for a second that I was on the north/south trail, and almost turned left. But I was actually only a few feet from the control -- the combination of trying to aim-off to the right and drifting to the left basically meant that I went on the straight line to the control. I'm glad that I glanced to my right before heading down the trail the wrong way.

I was really tired by the end, and regret my route decision from the 'go' control to the finish. I went through the amphitheater, but think in retrospect that it would have been faster to go back up to the track and run in on the trail. I also drifted way too far left on #9 in an attempt to avoid the steep creek bank. I probably could have saved some time with a better route to #9.

Field checking 35:00 [1] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)
shoes: Patagonia trail runners

Very light assisting with the TROL camp. Put some SI units out, and got out in the wood a bit to watch kids, trying to make sure that they didn't get too lost. Quite a successful event this year -- nice job Mike, Pat, and Matthew!

Trail running 40:00 [4] 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Brisk run around MUNA with Joel. Afterward, we finally made our habanero mash; I'm looking forward to watching it ferment.

Orienteering race 1:40:37 [3] 6.5 km (15:29 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Very nice red course set by Jon Rauschenbach, went through some tricky sections of HW, and left plenty of places for mistakes. I only hit about 6 controls very cleanly, and was sloppy but not too bad on about 8. I completely botched #2 (ran within 10 meters of it and then ran back to attack it again) #3 (veered way too far west) #4 (parallel error) and #18 (misjudged distance). Climbing the hill on the way to #17 was tiring enough to make me worry about the OLOU goat in a couple of weeks.

Field checking 3:30:00 [2] 7.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Field checking the last dozen controls at East Fork for the Billy Pig. Muddy trails, thorny off-trail, and super-steep.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 4.7 km (9:34 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Permanent (campground) course at HW. I couldn't resist getting out in the woods this afternoon -- pretty perfect weather for orienteering. Probably had to run an extra 1.5 miles because of the bridge construction just east of Hedgerow area.

Trail running 30:00 [3] 4.2 mi (7:09 / mi)

Trail running 1:07:00 [3] 7.5 mi (8:56 / mi)

Run around MUNA, very sluggish. My time is probably an underestimate.

Sluggish run around MUNA, about half of the run was north of Bonham

Road running 1:00:00 [4] 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Another run around Captial Hill in Seattle and up to Volunteer park. This one felt much faster and harder than Friday's. Very hilly terrain, but the weather is perfect for running.

Orienteering race 48:57 [4] *** 5.8 km (8:26 / km)
spiked:11/13c

A very easy course at Island Crest Park on Mercer Island (Sammammish Orienteering Club). The course was basically a long yellow course -- entirely on trials. Participants who went off trail were DQ'ed. It was a nice chance to get a good run in and to see COC's WIOL program in action. WIOL is very impressive -- probably over 100 local high schoolers competing today. The trail network was a little complicated in places, but for the most part the navigational demands were pretty minimal. Maps were printed on waterproof paper, eliminating the need for plastic map cases.

Great morning run through my old haunts in Seattle, from downtown up to Capital Hill, down to Interlaken, up to Volunteer park. Great run.

Very pleasant run at HW, north from the trailhead instead of the usual south. Felt really good.
