Hike 4:30:00 [2] 5.5 mi (49:06 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 - Mudrock

Zion -- from the Grotto up to Angel's landing. I left my group for about 15 minutes and made a good hill workout from some of the switchbacks. It was very icy through Walter's wiggles (e.g., people going up on hand and knee) and when we got to the last 0.5 to the summit, we decided to bail and continue further down the West rim. Spotted condor #52 on the way.

Hike 20:00 [1] 1.5 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Patagonia trail runners

Short hike out from Rt. 89 to the Horseshoe Bend in the Colorado River.

Hike 7:30:00 [2] 10.7 mi (42:03 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 - Mudrock

Bright Angel trail -- Phantom Ranch to the South rim. Snow and ice for the last 1.5 miles. My Inov8's worked just about as well as hiking boots plus Yak tracks.

Hike 6:00:00 [2] 7.2 mi (50:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 - Mudrock

North Kaibab, from the south rim to the Phantom Ranch. Very slow, but ridiculously gorgeous hike with a large group of only somewhat athletic friends.

Shawnee Extreme rogaine. Slow, but very solid navigation in a very demanding park. The event was very well-run and extremely enjoyable and rewarding. NSF events have much more of an "adventure race" feel than an "orienteering" feel, but they are quite fun and worth doing. My biggest pet peeve over the whole experience was using a map whose meridians did not signify magnetic north and which depicted E-W lines exactly the same as N-S lines. Coupled with the text that was not always printed upright, this made direction finding much more prone to 90-degree (and/or 5-degree) errors than usual.

But Jacob and I were very solid navigationally. Except for 2 controls that we knowingly abandoned, we were able basically to sweep the north side of the course by night-time. The south part went much slower -- probably more because of fatigue than darkness. Had we been more concerned about maximizing our point total, we probably would not have gone 4 miles out of the way to pick up one 80 point control. The decision likely cost us several medium point value controls that were more centrally located. We got back to the car around 22 hours and figured that there were no more controls that we could safely clear before time ran out.

Very easy jog around MUNA -- tried to take it easy on my calf, and it felt great.
