Green course at Mitchell -- my next entry in a growing list of disappointing performances at Mitchell, dating back to a miserable old Bob Roncker's 11.7 mile trail run out there (which currently stands as the third worst racing experience of my life). I enjoyed two or three well-planned and well-executed legs; but they were definitely the exception.

Red course at Yellowwood (time estimated). Very nice day to be out, and conditions on the ground were really not as bad as expected. A fair run with a route choice error to 7 and a bad mistake at 13, otherwise relatively clean, albeit slow, especially on hills (and recovering from hills). The mass start was fun, and as expected, meant that I would have a head-to-head with Mike, who ended up besting me. Good map, good terrain, well-placed controls, and near-perfect weather. Definitely the right choice to attend this one.

Scouting some control sites at Mounds/Garr Hill. I hope I never see the stream as high as it is today.

Trudge through Hueston Woods, with a 20-minute interlude to search for a reportedly stray/abandoned puppy near the dog park. Found some of his tracks, but couldn't find him. Too bad.

Red course at Sharon Woods, set by cedarcreek. Very nice course, with a lot of good terrain variability: open and semi-open fields, forest, thick vegetation, water, etc. And a great day to be outside. I lost probably 5 minutes on a stupid mistake between 7 and 8; and lost around 1 minute on an early leg, probably due mostly to some magnetic interference with my compass. But the effort was basically another great illustration of how out-of-shape I am.

BOK, Blue course, set by Joseph Hubermann. Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina, orienteering on a blue course, in Umstead, 54-degrees, partly sunny, well-placed controls (though frequently hidden behind unmapped features), and very few navigational errors. Great day!

Orienteering 52:52 [4] 5.6 km (9:26 / km)

Long sprint-like course on a new map at Woodland Lakes. Courses set by David Williams. Very fun, and no real navigational errors to speak of -- maybe lost a few seconds here and there on route choice. I was pretty dead-legged from yesterday, but didn't feel slow enough to be beaten by 15 minutes.

shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Cabin Fever 6-hour score-O by NSF. Great course, and a nicely directed event. Weather was much better than expected -- mid 40's and dry. Conditions on the ground were probably the worst I have ever experienced -- the ground was as slick as it could possibly be, making climbs, descents, and contouring exceptionally difficult and slow. I'm also in very bad shape, and after about six 300' climbs, I needed about an hour of slow recovery-walking to be ablet to jog again. Left 9 of the controls in the woods w/o punching. Fun event, but very exhausting.
