SAR navigation training at Shelly Lake, Bloomington, very much like the military. It's definitely a stretch to call it orienteering because there was no map -- just a variety of azimuth and pace-counting exercises. Still, it's navigation and in the woods on a perfect day; so it was fun.

Pre-run of Mike's red course. Exceptionally high quality course, great terrain, and a great map. It was really nice to have this opportunity.

Brisk run at Umstead. Sped-up for a couple miles in the middle to put some distance between me and some loud-mouthed runners who got on my trail as it crossed the road.

Slow jog at Umstead. I heard frogs and saw daffodils blooming. Can Spring already be here? Saw a bald eagle on the way home.

Control. pickup 35:00 [3] 2.5 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Picked up 13 controls, covering about 3K point to point, treating it as a memory-O. I just looked at my map twice, both times just to verify that I wasn't missing a control somewhere -- not really to plan routes.

From my perspective, it was a very successful meet -- a fair bit of praise for the course designs, and quite a few overheard conversations about people having the experiences I had hoped for.
8 AM

Field checking 3:00:00 intensity: (2:15:00 @1) + (45:00 @3) 6.5 mi (27:41 / mi)

Putting out controls and running down to Sycamore Creek to check the water level. Thinking that I dropped control #51 and retracing my steps, only to find it in the car. Everything set and ready to go by 11:30
3 PM

Note

Did ARDF for the first time, and was surprised how fun it was. Even more mental than regular O.

Setting the first batch of far controls for Sunday's meet. I'm a bit worried about the water level in the main creek -- hope it goes down by Sunday.

Orienteering 1:17:24 [4] *** 7.9 km (9:48 / km)
spiked:9/11c shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Pre-run of this Sunday's red course. A perfect day for orienteering, and a very nice course, if I do say so myself. I did end up splitting up the long first leg into two, which really did eliminate the trail options. The red course now begins with a mile-long leg, followed immediately by another mile-long leg. Quite a bit of fun.

Jog around Sol's branch trail. Great weather.

OCIN Diamond Oaks, Veterans Park, Green course. A sprint-like 5k course, required a lot of attention and rapid decision making, took runners to pretty much every corner of this small park. Thoroughly enjoyable except for the honeysuckle which, after getting used to Umstead, seems all the more annoying. My navigation was very solid, though my legs were a little dead.

shoes: MudRock IV

NSF's Cabin Fever 6 hour score-O. An exceptionally well-planned course that resisted all attempts to plan a logical route among controls. I went out planning to skip 5 controls, and ended up skipping them and 3 more due to lack of time. Conditions were pretty brutal. The temperature was tolerable (probably in the upper teens), but the terrain was very steep and slick. Worst, a 2 inch coat of snow covered all of the crap that I would usually try not to step on. I made essentially no navigational errors, and my calf didn't act up too badly. So all in all it was a great day. The only way for it to be much better would be for me to be in better shape.
