Orienteering race 1:10:00 [3] 3.0 mi (23:20 / mi)
shoes: MudRock IV

Perhaps my most horrible race ever -- the Green Corn Moon 'rogaine' put on by NSF. I was super tired to begin with, and could not take the high humidity. I was completely saturated with sweat after 30 minutes, in a way that usually happens after 2 or 3 hours. I was dehydrated, and drank about 100 ounces of water, draining my Camelbak within the first hour. To make matters worse, I was missing controls and making stupid errors. When I got to the attackpoint for a 40 point control and had no motivation to pursue it, I realized that I should just call it quits and go home. A very flat ending to a superb week of orienteering.

One should never do an NSF rogaine the day after a trail-O. These events are exact opposites.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 5.0 km (18:00 / km)

Canoe-O with Addison. We finished with only 30 seconds to spare, and almost cleared the course. Very fun event
3 PM

Orienteering 1:30:00 [0] 2.5 km (36:00 / km)
shoes: Patagonia trail runners

Trail-O on the US championship course. My opinion of this 'sport' Improved today as a result of doing this course. I thought that several stations really were just coin flips, but several others really were quite thoughtful and interesting. Missed 4 out of 15 stations.

Orienteering 23:00 [4] 2.4 km (9:35 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Quite a few mistakes on this sprint at Webster. Fun course, though. Pulled my calf on one of the last legs...I'll take it easy on it until Saturday evening
3 PM

Orienteering 30:00 [1] 2.1 km (14:17 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Training on the first control -- flipping the map and quickly getting your bearings

Orienteering race 21:00 [4] 2.3 km (9:08 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Letchworth park sprint. A truly gorgeous park and a fun sprint with a mediocre course design. I made a few mistakes but probably nothing more than 20 seconds. Just felt really tired and slow and probably would have benefitted from a better warmup
4 PM

Orienteering 30:00 [2] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Donut-O, training on attack points. A pretty good exercise, probably could have been a bit harder.

Orienteering 1:42 [5] 0.2 km (8:30 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

My first string-O. I need practice and a better SI card.

Orienteering race 23:00 [4] 2.5 km (9:12 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Sprint race at Durand park. very nice venue for a sprint. I ran okay but am feeling some fatigue. Biggest mistake was at #8 on which I lost about 30 seconds, coming up the hill much too far North.
3 PM

Orienteering 40:00 [1] 2.1 km (19:03 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Map simplification training at Durand. I think there is a good idea here but I'm not sure it worked perfectly today. Before hitting the course, we drew a new simpler map by hand and navigated using it. My hand drawn map only retained relative bearings, attackpoint features and control features, and it was too easy. If they made you switch maps with someone, that could be much more challenging. The maps also make an informative diagnostic tool to find out what someone keys off.
4 PM

Orienteering 19:00 [5] 2.0 km (9:30 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Memory duo training exercise with dersu. This is a great training format and whether you lead or follow, there is always a lot to think about with very little time to rest. I was pretty dead by the end of this one.

Orienteering race 20:33 [4] 2.2 km (9:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

A fun sprint at Mendon Ponds. not a whole lot of route choice, though; usually the fastest route was on the red line.
3 PM

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 2.1 km (21:26 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Circle-O training exercise. Navigating on a circular map without north lines and with trails removed. Although it was a sunny day, I didn't use the sun (consciously) much and really tried to practice reading contours. About half of the controls were pretty easy, but the terrain was relatively complex, and some were quite tricky. All in all, it was a great training exercise
9 PM

Orienteering race 1:00:00 [4] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Night-O at Mendon Ponds. The mass start night score format has to be about as fun as it gets. I made a few mistakes but mostly did fine

Orienteering race 2:48:00 [4] 8.4 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Day 2 of the US Champs. I foolishly hoped that the second day would be easier than the first--it was much tougher. the terrain was even more detailed (and on a 1:15000 map to boot) and the control placement was extremely challenging. I ran very well, spiking controls 1-5. Unfortunately, controls 6 and 7 were missing, and I wasted a lot of time looking before I called off the search. I was a bit dejected thereafter, and was pretty tired and slow. Made one of the dumbest errors ever when I spiked #9 but stupidly checked it against the control code for #10. I wasted 8 minutes before I realized that I actually was on #9.

Orienteering race 2:20:03 [4] 8.7 km (16:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Day 1 of the US Champs. Ran okay on some very challenging terrain. Having a calf problem probably helped slow me down enough to stay in better contact with the map.
