Orienteering race 49:42 [5] *** 4.7 km (10:34 / km) +125m 9:20 / km
spiked:16/17c

NEOC A-meet, day 1, red middle distance. It is dreary and the woods are messy, rocks, swamps, undergrowth. I read the map too much and realize only in the end how simple the course was. I should have run more aggressively and simplified much more radical. I don't make big mistakes, but I lose time overreading the map.

Running 3.0 km ( / km) +20m / km

Run to start and warm-up for race. I wear a short arm T-shirt, not enough for today and don't get really warm. -

I talk to Swampfox after the race, since he has one of his rare east coast appearances. We go on about nothing, something and thingness per se. I assure him (and the cheerished reader of this important column here) that the writing of my novel is fact not fiction, despite the fact, that the novel is in fact a piece of fiction, based on facts disguised as fiction.

In other words, getting lost in the woods is one thing, but getting lost in telling tales means badgering between insight and oversight and meaningful flashes.

Swampfox announces that he intends to write a tale of redemption after completing the scientic ouevre on G-nuity. Oprah has booked his appearance. She is concerned that Swampfox might take her on a three hour run before the show to demonstrate his redemptive talent.

Running 36:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:48 / km) +50m 4:39 / km

I run and relax, try to do an early warm up for the NEOC meet tomorrow. I spent a good part of the day to get a map printed, in the same shop as usual. This time the contours came out thin and jagged. We switched machines, we still got somewhat jagged lines, but less. It worked before with the same set-up, but maybe it wasn't the same machine, since they change them all the time. I have to check what might be different on this file. I probably drive the printer crazy with my critical eye.

Orienteering (Course setting) 1:02:45 [2] *** 3.6 km (17:26 / km) +100m 15:18 / km
spiked:6/6c

Course setting on Silvermine. The brush fire from last weekend cleaned off most of the grass on the old ski slopes and some of the surrounding woods look barren and black. No controls were burned, but they would have been if they had been out already.

Orienteering 15:41 [5] *** 2.6 km (6:02 / km) +60m 5:24 / km
spiked:11/11c

I run the Silvermine sprint the first time in full daylight. I try some new route choices, including one which I didn't consider before and which is really good. No, I don't tell more about it. New best time for the 2.28k/60m/11 control course is now 15.4194 min. I am sure it can be baltered or fredricksoned by someone really fast and fresh.

Running 22:49 [3] 4.5 km (5:04 / km) +30m 4:54 / km

Warm-up run to the track and a warm down loop home. I taper off and sleep a lot. What a great training format: Sleeping enough.

Intervals 19:40 [5] 4.0 km (4:55 / km)

Intervals on the track: 4x100, 2x200, 1x400 and down, with the same distance to recuperate in between the sprints. I want to go to threshold and challenge the body, without tiring it out.

Running 34:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:32 / km) +50m 4:23 / km

Some serious tapering off, so I do an easy 7k run, parts of it a little bit faster. The problem with tapering off is always that I lose the edge to go to the threshold during the light run. This is the reason I push a few times to go hard.

Running 37:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:56 / km) +50m 4:46 / km

I ease up to get my energy back. I haven't had an easy week for a while. Better taper off before next weekends NEOC meet. Do some serious napping to catch up with sleep, too.

Running 46:00 [3] 8.2 km (5:37 / km) +60m 5:25 / km

Easy run to Dennings Point, run long tempo runs. Good warm spring weather, blue sky. Lots of dogs with happy dog owners. Of course, no dog follows, no dog slobbers and jumps up on me, no dog slows me down. Not. If only dogs would keep their owners on leashes all the time.

Intervals tempo 15:00 [4] 3.4 km (4:25 / km) +40m 4:10 / km

4x 3.5 - 4 minutes long tempo runs. I am tired, so I only do a few of them. I don't know it is the garden & house clean-up yesterday or the long Silvermine run last week, but I feel slow.
