Orienteer (Orange training) 1:30:00 [3] 5.0 mi (18:00 / mi)
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Walked part of the Orange training course w a couple of groups including Heidi and Mike, and also Kenneth.
Heidi has a natural ability to see things, and Mike has run two other MNOC events so it was easy and fun.
Kenneth can run and does lots of outdoor hiking, but was tied to walking on a bearing so I had to punish him by taking the compass away after he used it at each control.
I like Hyland skills clinic. Always fun, always good.
2 PM

Run (warm up) 20 [3] 0.02 km (16:40 / km)
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Decided I really should warm up prior to sprinting. Didn't feel like it, it turns out.
3 PM

Orienteer race (Hyland Park Sprint) 23:21 [3] 2.5 km (9:20 / km)
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Tried to file a formal protest over control location 9 - lots of other controls within 50m, controls on similar features within 100m. Turns out that MNOC policy is that a formal complaint has to be filed at MNOC HQ prior to course closing, in triplicate And, we don't want our Prez to quit out of frustration, although I think the bylaws state something about "President for Life".
So I suppose I'll just say I messed up w 9 and leave it at that.
Other than that, I had a much better race than I expected, kept moving
Nice course. It helped a lot to have walked the orange course, since I knew the vegetation was much worse everywhere than mapped, and avoided a lot of it by going around.
4 PM

Orienteer (Control Pickup) 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

7 controls. Walked pretty slow. I felt slow and hot and achy (from Thursday lunges) all day, only time it went away was during the Sprint... I thought I wasn't going to enjoy the Sprint --but the adrenaline feels gooood.

Orienteer (Lake Elmo) 1:05:00 [3] 3.2 mi (20:19 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite™ 268

Very slow, stiff today. Verve-less. Couldn't figure out why I was stiff, but I think it was from the lunges and other active warm-up exercises we did yesterday prior to the hill workout. Maybe I'll incorporate it into a weekly routine, although we looked almost as silly as maprunner and her PT that she likes to do.

Run (Battle Creek) 40:00 [3] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite™ 268

jogged over to the big hill w Chris, then ran hill intervals (ladders, 6).

Run (Battle Creek) 1:00:00 [3] 4.2 mi (14:17 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite™ 268

big crowd today..... one newbie runner so I stuck with her for most of the way, which meant lots of walking up hills (good thing I already did hills).

Run (Battle Creek) 36:00 [3] 3.29 mi (10:57 / mi)
shoes: Asics2

Ran with Dana , whom I met at REI training.
She's looking for new sport in addition to XC ski, and is debating between orienteering and triathlon. She'll be at the Hyland Skills clinic....... so if you see her, help make the case!

I thought it was interesting that both Dana and the other meetup woman at REI training, Heidi, were drawn to orienteering due to their navigation backgrounds ..... Dana as a pilot (navigating by what she saw on the ground) and Heidi was an Alaskan salmon boat navigator... navigated by the sonar on the ocean floor and other aids.
6 PM

Orienteer (Lake Elmo) 50:00 [3] 3.5 km (14:17 / km)
shoes: Asics2

I stopped by Lake Elmo on the way home. Vetting

Run (Battle Creek) 42:46 [3] 4.09 mi (10:27 / mi) +122m 9:34 / mi
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Short run after lunch.
Low carb chili w cheese didn't sit too well in my stomach, but I felt pretty good about the run... even the hills. =)

Run 23:54 [3] 3.0 mi (7:58 / mi)
shoes: Asics2

I was aiming at an 8:30 pace, trying to get out of my slow slow (and overweight) mode. Watch said 8:34 after 200 m, sped up, it said 8:35, sped up.... uhh... that was the time not the pace. Kind of tired by the end but good pace for me these days for sure.
8:12, 8:08, 7:34

Run (River road) 24:35 [3] 3.0 mi (8:12 / mi)
shoes: Asics2

same workout, same effort, hotter windier and a bit slower

Orienteer (Silver Woods Park) 54:00 [3] 5.6 km (9:39 / km)

OTNT with great turnout.
Back to back sprints (2.8 km each) with map exchange.
It's an "art park" with sculptures, poetry stops, artwork. But we just zoomed by them --only saw them as features with pink control flags.

I messed up on first control due to map scale error... 1:2400, and I just saw and ran to a big reentrant that looked like it was the right distance away (before I checked map scale).
We had to run the controls in order, but were permitted to run the in forward or reverse order. On first map, I picked reverse order and that messed me up big time at one point. Either that or I read the numbers wrong. Who knows, but I'm quite sure I missed a control somehow (don't have my map anymore).
2nd map I decided to go in regular order. Ian mentioned too he explicitly decided against reverse order 'cause he figured he'd end up going 10-9-8-9-8-7-6-7-8-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 or something goofy. Good call Ian.
2nd Map I went in the right order, was getting a bit tired by then though. I saw Jim Mullin most of the way on Map 2, then he pulled ahead as I took a long route choice and slowed down too.
I think I perhaps ended up last. But good exercise and good sprint practice too.
At the end, we each got a piece of artwork to tell about while we had lunch in the upscale art cafe in the park.

Meteor
Around the fire, we sang Hank Williams songs
About our cheatin' hearts and what we got cookin'
The great river was behind us

The train to Chicago split the night with a long soulful moan
Where are we going

Just then in search of the Little Dipper, it flashed above our heads, spiking the atmosphere
A ball of hot iron that sizzled an sparked as it shot into our realm from elsewhere

We heard it,
We smelled the burning down

Whatever remained landed on a pinpoint in a field beyond the ridge, knocking a ladybug off a leaf
The rest of it, landed in us

5 PM

Orienteer (Lake Elmo) 1:05:00 [3] 5.0 km (13:00 / km)
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Turns out I got a few nice blisters from orienteering with Merrell sandles, including a big one on my big toe. So I took it easy on the feet and just walk/slow jogged on some parts, w Alice and vetted some.
