Run (River Road) 27:00 [3] 3.2 mi (8:26 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

Good run, but again....another dark one with headlight.
Winter is beginning to feel long, already.
I've been seeing signs that it's affecting the wildlife around here. Today, Alice found a fox-tail, and was proudly carrying it around. Bet the fox wasn't feeling too good. Starved? And last week, putting out controls, I saw numerous spots of raspberry-blue snocone colored snow.... a sign that the deer are resorting to eating buckthorn, with all other food gone. .

Hike (Controls) 58:00 [3] 3.0 mi (19:20 / mi)

It was still kind of dark, wanted to place my two last controls. Forgot my reading glasses. Don't worry. I was really really careful. =)

Orienteer (art tour) 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

Great OTNT event, despite the cold weather coming back and icy conditions.

After a warm-up run to the Sculpture Garden, toddp set up a couple of
"Art Courses"

Art 101: This course is good for people who like to see a lot of art in a very short time. (12 min) Learned to recognize art-work by looking for the sculptures in the sculpture garden. Quick ability to find and recognize art objects got us all up to speed on "what is art"? in a score-o format.

Art 102: Expanded from Sculpture Garden to include Loring Park, longer course and standard O format. Clue sheet revealed which items were "Art" (Xs) or "Not Art". 29 min

GREAT idea to have this run in sculpture park, toddp. Lots of things to see, and fun to get out in the cold and still be warm, and get to see all the other lights bobbing around the park. Suggestion: Next time, we should have an mp3 that describes the artwork as we run by it. No time to stop and gawk!
Also, there was some suggestions for a Summer Art Course.
I agree, that would be awesome--and i bet some of these sculptures look better in daylight than headlamplight....

Hike (hiking/slow jog) 1:42:00 [3] 7.5 mi (13:36 / mi)

Made it to ASP and around a small bit of the trails. Snow is still fairly deep, considering the warmer weather. Not quite slushy yet.

This started out as a slow jog, but my achilles tendon has been sore at the beginning of each workout the last week or so. This time it didn't really loosen up, and so I ended up hiking a bit..started getting cold (wasn't dressed for a walk) then just coming back home at walk/slow jog. Achilles isn't too bad ... just don't want it to become a problem.

Note

Securian 5K in St. Paul at 9:15

Run warm up/down 50:00 [3] 4.5 mi (11:07 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

Fast jogging and a few sprints to warm-up- checked out the route.
Very slow jogging (icy sidewalks) warm down.
9 AM

Run race (road race) 22:34 [5] 5.0 km (4:31 / km) vdot: 43.2
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

I felt good about this event; I was hoping to have a faster time but gave it good effort and felt strong, and this is what resulted.

Run was in St. Paul, from Securian bldg (6th and Jackson)--down Jackson street to Shepard by the river, along the river, and then back.
Splits
First Mile @ 6:40 (1 steep downhill block). I thought this felt faster.
Mile--> 2.5 km, pace dropped to 7:02 for this flat segment
Last half pace dropped to 7:42, with strong headwind and short steep hill at end.
Overall Pace: 7:15. With headwinds and hill taken into account, I think I paced this mostly correct, maybe a little too fast on the way out. Four guys passed me on the way back, not too too bad.

This is mostly a "fun run", I believe.... the main Securian event being the 1/2 marathon qualifier for Medtronic TC marathon. But 1700 people ran the 5K, and I placed in top 20 or 25 overall, second place for women. Perhaps January races are slower, but it was fun being out in front.

Run (Trail) 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

Took a break from work at lunch time and jogged over to Battle Creek Park. The footing was a mix of icy sidewalk, packed snow, unused snow, and dry stuff. Good run.... but I am not a fan of the new dog park. It's a great dog park to be sure.... but I forgot that I had an older map, and it's annoying to have to climb over a fence just to get to a path. And then... since the dogs are allowed to be loose... the owners apparently think that means it's okay for them to jump up on people too. I do like dogs, but I don't always trust that the owners have trained their dogs well--- if they jump, will they bite?

Run (River Road/Coulee trot) 55:00 [3] 5.1 mi (10:47 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

Came home early to get some uninterrupted work, and then found out it was still daylight and it might be a good idea to go for a run. The roads were icy, but that's okay, it was my plan to go slowly anyway. I ran into another friend walking her dog, had Alice take off at one point and I had to wait for her...all in all a fairly carefree little jog and good to see some sunlight. Added bonus: it's not that cold, for the coldest time of the year.

Hike (Hiking) 2:55:00 [2]

Afton SP, using MNOC map-- off trail, up and down slopes, looking for features, practicing some skills, and marking features for future use.

With a nice and warm day, this was a treat. There's plenty of snow in the park, people on the trails to say "hi" to on occasion, and the off-trail part is pretty fun, with some sliding down the steeper areas- but no ice. Not too many areas were really deep... some up to the knee, but mostly fairly decent if not exactly runnable.

Run (Trail) 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Trail running at Afton State Park, although mostly on the paved trails; the other trails are groomed for XC skiing, and I had Alice.
Although we can keep off to the side on ski trails, ( I have trained her to stay in the deep snow)... it's too much work for her, and I have to keep on her. And, I have a new respect for keeping the XC tracks clear!
Slipped on ice once and had another SPLAT. I am getting a little tired of that at this point.

XC Ski 1:30:00 [3]

]Lake Elmo--- first time for me on XC skis since the 1970s!
(Forest Park, STL, uncomfortable boots, wet snow, all alone, no trails, and determine to learn... numerous tries but never enjoyed it.)

I started out a little shaky, then learned on the first slight downward slope NOT to lean forward on XC skis. Oops. Just one more little fall required before I got my balance at least a bit.
Fortunately, my ski partner was just very encouraging and patient, "you're doing great".... but kept me moving and not letting me get stuck in my head too much.
I tried a little of the skate skiing- but it sure didn't feel stable, and so i reverted to the nice tracks pretty quickly (kind of like training wheels for me).
The weather was great, sunny, trails were good... but 90 minutes was about as much as I was mentally prepared for. And, my arms were getting tired.

But... I do think this will not be my only time this winter. I enjoyed myself and could feel the improvement and it just kept getting to be more fun.

Speed Skate 50:00 [3]

Last time I went out I was the only one on the oval, but this time there were about eight of us which made things a lot more interesting. I love watching the competitive skaters, and trying to emulate their form. It really helps. And, there's more people to talk to than just the ones in my head, so that's nice too.
I found out that the oval closes in about a month already for speed skating!
Unfair!! I guess I will try a little harder to make it out there, but the open ss time is from 2-3--not all that convenient.

Note

A great example of "it's never to late to start a new sport"-- one of the speed skaters, who looked to be about 60, mentioned that he took up figure skating two years ago... spins and all, since it's hard to get enough time on the oval, and you really can't do the long blades indoors.
I thought that was pretty gutsy.

Legs just were NOT cooperating tonight, physically... walked a number of the hills. argghh

Run (treadmill) 46:27 [3] 6.0 mi (7:45 / mi)

5 miles at 8:00 pace
1 mile at 6:27

I was sorry to have to miss the Lake Elmo event.
It sounds as if everyone had a good time and good runs; despite the incredible difficulty of slogging through a foot or more of snow in the bitter weather.

I finally kicked my cold...must be my lack of physical exertion over the last five days.

Elliptical 30:00 [3]

Terraining (back woods) 35:00 [3] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

Backwoods

More snow on my trail, new drifts. Getting a bit easier nonetheless. It's nice that it's finally getting back to a normal level of really cold, though. Lighter layers.

Terraining (back woods) 29:00 [3] 1.5 mi (19:20 / mi)

It was very cold outside tonight, but I didn't feel it a bit.
The path is finally getting packed down in a few places, and in those spots,it's getting kind of fun......but the real snowy areas are still just hard work.
The reflectors I put up last weekend worked great, I had no problem finding my way and it made it easier to keep a more steady pace.

Hike (Walk/Trot Hike) 1:30:00 [3] 3.5 mi (25:43 / mi)

Lake Elmo- checking some of the controls that Justin and Mo set a few days ago. With temps starting at -15F, and crusty snow drifts reaching to my knees in several spots, this was a good workout --but slow and cold too. I tried to trot wherever possible, but that was mostly just in footprints.
Upside... Lake Elmos is beautiful with all this snow, very few people, and the trails all covered. Lots of deer grazing in the fields.

Terraining (back woods) 34:00 [3] 1.5 mi (22:40 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

I tried out my newly laid trail behind my house.. it has portions that are quite runnable already, despite the snowfall, and portions that still were deep and needed some more trampling down, which Alice and I did.

Distance is between 1.45 and 2 miles, i will have to GPS it when I get a GPS some day.... small hills, winding path.
I kept up a trot wherever possible, came home warm - even my feet.

Run (treadmill) 46:06 [4] 6.0 mi (7:41 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

My legs were stiff today, maybe due to working on treadmill vs. trail this week, but for me it was too cold to be running outside so more treadmill today.
Focused first half on form, second half on staying relaxed -particularly with returning leg swing.
Felt good during the run, then a bit nauseous when I stopped.

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 18:10 [3] 2.0 mi (9:05 / mi)

Again- felt great until I stopped.
