Note

No exercise today due to my knee injury suffered yesterday. On the other hand, I did manage to clean out my clothes closet.

Hiking 1:17:49 [3] 2.69 mi (28:56 / mi) +565ft 24:08 / mi

While my orienteering has been pretty much non-existent, I finally noticed the BG79 Re-enactment about 10 days ago. And then I got to read the reports of PG, Charlie and PBricker, which inspired me to at least print out the map and make a trip to Mt. Tom to see if I could do any of it. My goal wasn't to fnish, just to see if I could orienteer in such complex terrain without much training. Short answer: No.

I got hopelessly lost on the way to #1, never bothered to relocate and decided to keep going to the remainng #2 through #4 controls. I'm too embarassed to post my route to #2, but I will admit to going past the ruins on Mt. Norwottuck. LOL

And then disaster struck as I lost my footing going down a steep, rocky hill and ended up rolling once or twice while managing to smash my knee into a rock. It didn't seem terribly bad, no blood, but it did hurt a lot. Alas, walking downhill was quite painful on any sort of slope, so I was reduced to limping back at a very slow pace. I did visit #3 and #4 on my out though.

Now icing and elevating and hoping there's no harm done, other than to my ego. :-)

Hiking 1:43:14 [3] 5.52 mi (18:42 / mi) +630ft 16:53 / mi

Hike with Colette in Kennedy Park. In an attempt to beat the heat and the thunderstorms, we got out in the morning. While still warm, there was a cooling breeze for most of the hike.

Hiking 1:33:41 [3] 5.0 mi (18:44 / mi) +310ft 17:42 / mi

Hike with Colette at The Boulders. We were both rather tired from yesterday's outing, so we cut it short and did five miles instead of six. A wise move, imo. And then we went for some FroYo and soft-serve ice cream.

Hiking 2:57:42 [3] 8.77 mi (20:16 / mi) +790ft 18:40 / mi

Hike with Colette in Cookson State Forest in Southfield. To get into Cookson means passing through New Marlborough Land Trust's 1,000 Acre Swamp trails, which are accessed from a very small parking area on Hotchkiss Road. From there, the fairly flat trail leads past the 1,000 Acre Swamp ( really only 155 square acres) to a neat suspension bridge that crosses the Whiting River, which flows out of Windemere Lake Reservoir not too far away.

Once over the bridge, we finally got to Cookson State Forest, which offers a couple of larger loops from which various spurs branch off to points of interest, such as the dam at the end of 1,000 Acre Swamp, or to East Indies Pond. The trails in Cookson, while still nice, are a bit hillier and rockier than those in the Land Trust's land.

There are some old foundations to explore, including those of an old cheese-box factory, and some stone ruins, piles of stone, that are thought to be of Mahican origin.

The 1000 Acre Swamp is popular fishing locale and looked very inviting for canoeing, I will admit.

Hiking 1:18:48 [3] 3.57 mi (22:04 / mi) +465ft 19:39 / mi

Wandering around near Felton Lake with a couple of things to do: 1) locate and get the co-ordinates for some old chimneys and 2) try to find two geocaches that Colette has yet to find.

There were a couple of hindrances; the bugs were a PITA and my energy level was fairly low.

I did find the chimneys and one geocache, so it wasn't a total waste of time, but it certainly was not a great hike.

Hiking 1:20:18 [3] 4.02 mi (19:58 / mi) +370ft 18:22 / mi

We were pleased to be greeted by slightly cooler air and a breeze once we got to the top of the road at Beartown Mountain Road, where we parked.

I did a working hike with Colette in Beartown State Forest with the objective to replace two missing geocaches; mission accomplished. After that we set out to find the Perry Cemetery, which we had been to years ago; that mission failed.
