Hike with Colette in Cookson State Forest in Southfield. To get into Cookson means passing through New Marlborough Land Trust's 1,000 Acre Swamp trails, which are accessed from a very small parking area on Hotchkiss Road. From there, the fairly flat trail leads past the 1,000 Acre Swamp ( really only 155 square acres) to a neat suspension bridge that crosses the Whiting River, which flows out of Windemere Lake Reservoir not too far away.
Once over the bridge, we finally got to Cookson State Forest, which offers a couple of larger loops from which various spurs branch off to points of interest, such as the dam at the end of 1,000 Acre Swamp, or to East Indies Pond. The trails in Cookson, while still nice, are a bit hillier and rockier than those in the Land Trust's land.
There are some old foundations to explore, including those of an old cheese-box factory, and some stone ruins, piles of stone, that are thought to be of Mahican origin.
The 1000 Acre Swamp is popular fishing locale and looked very inviting for canoeing, I will admit.
