Run 38:15 [3] 5.3 km (7:13 / km)

Run around Benalla lake with Peter, from his house. I haven't been very enthusiastic this week

Cross country skiing 1:00:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:17 / km)

Today was Hoppet day and l patched up my blisters and skied ahead of the race, out to Watchbed Creek, to work on a drink station. My job was collecting cups that were caught at speed (often involving the drunk station staff getting a sticky soaking) and deposited some distance further down the track. It was cold and windy but l saw heaps of friends from the past. The 'highlight' was when the lead pack came at speed around the corner, led by a skidoo filming for TV, when suddenly Davin Hopper of street O fame decided to ski across the track and fell in the middle of the pack. They jumped him and went around, but the order may have changed - all caught on film. He then came and stood by me - 'l've never seen him before in my life'. I advised him to change his clothes before returning to the start.

Cross country skiing 30:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Oh dear. No more skiing for me for a while. My old boots have disintegrated and now rub badly. I have a large blister on one foot that rubs right where l kick off. Shame, as it is a glorious day. I'll need a big shopping spree when l get back. New skating boots and skis, new classic boots and skis, new apres boots. I am thinking a trip to Europe is in order as it is so hard to get good gear here.

Cross country skiing 2:10:00 [3] 20.0 km (6:30 / km)

Skate out to Watchbed Creek, up the Paralyzer and along Heathy's Spur, along a beautifully groomed track. The route had altered substantially from where it went years ago and l found it really tough going. Not skiing for years doesn't help.

Cross country skiing 4:30:00 [3] 25.0 km (10:48 / km)

Classic tour out to Wallace's Hut and the across Rocky Knobs and back around the Rocky Valley Dam. Tough going in soft snow in the second half. Climbing off the Rocky Knobbs to the dam was very technical.

Cross country skiing 1:40:00 [3] 10.0 km (10:00 / km)

A bit of a plod around Falls Creek on classic skis. It was snowing and the tracks were very soft. My classic skis don't grip very well on the uphills but are good on the downhills.

Run 39:53 [3] 5.5 km (7:15 / km)

Run along the river at Wang, just beating the rain. The river tracks have recently been turned into an interesting aboriginal cultural trail, with different gardens along the way, including a bush tucker garden.
I attended Peter's mother's funeral yesterday, which was a Ukrainian traditional sung service, with elderly nuns singing the whole service in beautiful harmonics. This was the 4th funeral l've attended in a month - l think that is enough! Luckily l am not working at the moment and can attend all these services.

Stretching/exercises 30:00 [3]

60 high stepups, 20 deep squats, 50 sit-ups, 50 dips, lots of stretches. I need to do this more often.
9 AM

Run 22:00 [3] 3.0 km (7:20 / km)

Run around the Blackburn creeklands. Glorious day but l didn't feel like it. Decided to avail myself of the playgrounds and seats and do exercises instead.

Monday Aug 15, 2016 #

Walk 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)

Walk around Blackburn. I could have run, but that might have been overdoing it.

Sunday Aug 14, 2016 #

Run 53:38 [3] 7.0 km (7:40 / km)

Trail run at Reef Hills. I was very slow in the hills in the first half, but sped up in the second. Lovely to be in the bush on a sunny morning. Bit tight in the glute and hammy.

Saturday Aug 13, 2016 #

9 AM

Run 40:09 [3] 5.5 km (7:18 / km)

Same route, same time, same weather. Path was a bit muddier and there were more dogs and 'hellos' (being Saturday). Improvement! Yay.

Friday Aug 12, 2016 #

9 AM

Swim 36:00 [3] 1.0 km (36:00 / km)

Swim in the Benalla pool.

Thursday Aug 11, 2016 #

9 AM

Run 40:48 [3] 5.5 km (7:25 / km)

Run around Benalla lake and parklands. Same route, same time of day, same clothes but a couple of seconds faster. Woohoo!

Wednesday Aug 10, 2016 #

9 AM

Run 41:00 [3] 5.5 km (7:27 / km)

Run around Benalla lake and parklands. Same as yesterday. The sun was out, l wore a short sleeve top and conditions were perfect. I did the best l could but, alas, no improvement - not even 1 second improvement :(

Tuesday Aug 9, 2016 #

Run 41:00 [3] 5.5 km (7:27 / km)

Run around Benalla lake and environs - struggling, as usual. Crews were cleaning up the large fallen redgum in the former free camping area - luckily no campers there now! Lovely sunny day but very chilly.

Orienteering 1:25:00 [3] 7.0 km (12:09 / km)

Dead Bullock Gully. This was another nice new area combining spur gully and mining detail. I felt comfortable the whole way and nav was only a little bit off, with the main problem at 11. I decided to try and straight line it, but l don't think this was very successful. I think l might return to my old right handed compass as l seemed to waste time setting the bearing on the new one. As you can guess, l was really quite slow and a bit disappointed in my time. Regardless, a nice jog in the bush and good to see everyone.

Orienteering 1:50:59 [3] 6.68 km (16:37 / km)

White Hills No 4. Amazingly complex area right near the centre of Bendigo. It even had underground bits and some new varieties of prickle! Route choices were clear - stick to the open or get ripped apart.
I opted for course 2 and was going reasonably well when l missed a control and had to backtrack. Turns out l missed TWO controls and so would be an MP. I also misjudged the finish shute and ran up the hill.
Turns out that was not the finish at all! There was a whole other course on the other side of the map and l was only half way round - and running up the hill was in fact the correct route!. For the second half l only walked. Foot was a bit sore ( the rocks resembled those in the WRC). I found the navigation a bit easier at a walk and the second time around.
Shame this map was not saved up for something special. It reminded me of Rowdy Flat.

7 AM

Run 45:30 [3] 6.0 km (7:35 / km)

Run around Blackburn Lake and creeklands. It's going to be a beautiful sunny day and there was a hint of daphne and jonquil in the air - perhaps there is hope after all. Time was slow but l didn't feel too bad. Not sure why it has taken me a week to recover from the trip (driving, camping and rogaining).

Wednesday Aug 3, 2016 #

Walk 58:00 [3] 5.8 km (10:00 / km)

Walk around Blackburn on a gloomy evening. I hope spring comes soon.

Tuesday Aug 2, 2016 #

Swim 36:00 [3] 1.0 km (36:00 / km)

Swim in the very lovely Aquanation Ringwood, trying to stretch out my back which is still sore. One good thing about the rogaine is that it fixed my sore foot, which has been sore for about a year but has not hurt since the rogaine! It was possibly the ankle taping that did it.Knee hasn't given me any trouble since then either.

Walk 1:07:00 [3] 6.7 km (10:00 / km)

I was meant to do some work today but the motor wouldn't start. Not at all. I think the battery is flat. Went for a walk around Blackburn instead
