Orienteering 30:51 [2] 4.6 km (6:42 / km)

Doddle round the middle model. Terrain is extreeeemely fast, think Curragh-like short grass. Bits of spiky green and kinda scattered trees so it feels like a forest. Undulating. It's probably a little bit harder than the qual was, but faster underfoot.
Efficiency will be really important. Every second will count.
Not really sure what to aim for tomorrow results-wise so I just want to be happy with my run and enjoy it (and beat the Irish obvs).

Run (road) 28:43 [2] 5.63 km (5:06 / km)

Nice easy run around the golfcourse to keep the legs going, followed by a splash in the pool.

Orienteering race 1:05:43 [3] 8.0 km (8:13 / km)

EOC Long

Distance is a complete guess.

So this wasn't so good. Felt good in the start box, right frame of mind, but when I actually started I didn't navigate and just followed the two other guys. They had the same control but I had a different one. Got frustrated, didn't relocate quick enough at all. Eventually did and then came the next three, who started three minutes after. Followed a Finn in then. I knew he was on my heat then so I stuck to him for a bit. Fourth fastest split! He disappeared on the way to 4 (long leg), but I was feeling good then so I was happy enough running on my own.

Chose a good route choice and kept going. Pavel Kubat appeared behind me on the same route (also 3 minutes after so slightly surprising seeing as the Finn was well gone) so got a pull off him. He disappeared but I already had a route so whatever. Except I didn't stick to the route. There was a lovely path through the green, but I decided to take the shorter route and go straight through. Didn't work at all. I got quite far in but that was down hill, and then I was at the bottom of a valley and stuck. I was in there for what felt like half an hour, was only really like 10 mins, but still a lot of time gone. Very thorny too so getting out was not pleasant. Eventually escaped with legs ripped to bits and went back to my original route. Got the control well but it was easy. Head wasn't in it any more after that, messed up 5 slightly, messed up 6 badly. Then 7 meant I would have had to go through more green and I just couldn't make my self do it when I got there... so I gave up. I went to 17 and the controls after and got them really well. They called me out as 2nd or something at the radio control which was fun. I also somehow managed to mess up the last control??
But oh well.

What do we learn? Go on the model map. And don't go through green.

Orienteering race 35:35 [4]

EOC Middle.

Hadn't run a proper competition in ages.
Ran too fast at he start.
Started with Merl and Lithuanian guy.
1: Straight, had same one as Merl, but went to the other one, only lost like 5 secs cos it was on the way
2: Easy pie. Same as Merl.
3: Just kinda ran? I don't know why but it was the wrong direction. Ended up too far left and lost ~30secs.
4: Straight.
5: Easy
6: Ran too fast and went slightly to far. Found 7. Not too far away but still ~60 secs gone. Daehli ran by then (I knew he was in my heat because they messed up the start lanes and I could see the descriptions were the same.)
7: Had a good split to his! I wonder why...
8: Slightly curvy route, but it meant I was on the flat stuff. Saw Daehli come out.
9: Could pretty much see it from 8. Avoided the cultivated land well though because they said it was out of bounds at the meeting the night before. They also said it wouldn't be important anyway and that it shouldn't affect any routes....
10: Straight. Had no attackpoint so I was a bit hesitant but only lost ~15 secs.
11: Why was this a leg??
12:Straight:
13: Could see it from 12.
14: Around the track to the left, really tired now, and not orienteering properly. Unsure in the circle ~15 secs.
15: Could pretty much see it from 14 but it did seem awfully close. Apparently the map was wrong.
16: Nearly messed up the taped route. The open stuff was really tough going, but I kept going and then wasn't sure. I was very concious of the spectators then too. Lost another 30 sec I guess, if not more.
17: Easy.
18: Apparently this was in the wrong place by 30m. I guess it came up a bit quick but I wasn't bothered.
19: Bearing was off because of 18. Couldn't really make sense of what happened. UKR and BUL(?) did the same thing and we tried to relocate. We realised we were to high and then saw it below. ~80 secs!
20: Slog.
21: Slog.

So excluding the wrong control about 2:30 of mistakes, so not great really. Take that off my time and I gain 0 places!

The terrain was very fast so not ideal for me.

BUT all heats are void so I'm in the final anyway.
