SHI Individual, course length 12.1km 650m

Map!

This is going to be pretty long for analysis.
Looked up at the mountain in the morning and twas misty som fan. Sweet!
Left the car a little bit late and arrived at the start exactly as I had to go into the box. Should have warmed up a bit more but forgot about it.
Picked up descriptions and saw 650m climb... yay... I'd been feeling really poor on the hills during the relay so I decided I'd have to save myself a bit. I figured that once we were up onto the top bit it wouldn't be too bad.
1 was pretty easy. It was clear at the bottom of the hill and you could see the big gully just below from the start. Should have gone up the re-entrant before the stream, but just wasn't sure how much further the stream was. Hit the stream and went around a wee hilll and had to go back a bit. Lost a couple of seconds

2: The mist was sitting at about the height of the crag I passed about half way from 1, so I knew thing were going to get interesting. Once over the big crags it was easy though.

3: Now there was minimal visibility (and there was until coming down from 20) so I slowed down and went really carefully. Once I could see those big circular craggy things on top of the hill though it was fine.

4: Ran along the side of the hill and dropped down into it. Dropped a bit early and hesitated (10 secs). Jack appeared and went into though so found it then.

5: Flaked it (felt really good) along the re-entrant of blue things, dropped down from the pond, over the crags, contour/bearing to re-entrant, down and in, perfect.

6: Up and over, up the re-entrant, pond, more ponds. It was lower down so lees mist. Could see the marsh from just above but ran down too fast and didn't check where exactly the control was.

7: Back up into the mist, and not much to go off. Compass bearing and climb a bit but not too much. Was going to go a bit too high but I was the plateau with the marsh and ran in. James Tullie (started 3 minutes after me) appeared just behind at this point.

8: Up up up. Tullie was graually gaining on me. We were together by the saddle. Safe route around the bottom of the crags, marsh and straight across, he got it first.

9: Tullie absolutley flaked it off. He went down a wee bit too much so I cut the corner and caught back up. Hung on for dear life across to 9. He disappeared right at the end, so I dropped down to the plateau and then I saw him going into it. Sweet! (There was a massive boulder just in front of the crag for some reason?)

10: Straight along the marsh, save a bit of height and keep parallel above the bigger one. Along the top of the crags and down and in. Kieran and another Scot appeared just before 10. Two Scots went above the crag and I saw it below so got there first.

11: Up the re-entrant, along the marsh. Visibility was reallllly bad now so went slow. Eventually saw the two ponds and then it was easy to find.

12: Tullie was just ahead now with the other Scot just behind. Straight across on a bearing. Saw the boulder, down and in.

13: Tullie pulled away a bit going up the hill. Had to go really slow going down though cos you couldn't see a thing. My plan was to go across to the bigger re-entrant just south of 13 and then come up to it. We hit the smaller oneand I thought it was the bigger one. Tullie seemed to think something similar so I let him lead me in. No control. I saw the rectangular lake thing really quick though and then headed off in the right direction, so I was the first of the 3 of us to 13.

14: Plan was to contour across till the streams, then hit the marsh and go in. I wanted to stay high because I was still nervous about climbing (I thought I'd be much slower), the Scots went a bit lower and passed me. Tullie got a good lead then and had disappeared into the mist by the time I hit it.

15: Up to where 8 was then a bearing to the long marsh, over the crag and down and in.

16: Straight up over the hill. I'd intended hit the crags further to the left. I couldn't get down them where I hit them so I zigged back and around. All that meant I ended a bit too far right. Found a crag with a marsh just above, go down and no control... Tried to relocate for about a minute, then James Tullie appeared coming out of the control. The other Scot asked if it was over there and he said it was. Ran over and there is was.

17: Slow and hesitant but got it ok. Still misty and not much to go on. It was hard to tell if things were crags or hills or what.

18: Up the re-entrant then a bearing over the hill. Vaguely recognised the area as I'd been there twice before. Another guy appeared from somewhere and said something like "I've been here before, it's over here!" I follow for a bit then realise that it doesn't make sense at all, we still have to go over another hill. Him and the Scot go off somewhere and I go back to my bearing. Then James Tulllie reappeared! We're on the same bearing but he picks a better way through the crags and disappears again. I hesitate at the bottom of the crags and Allan appears. He asks if I'm going to 18 then says it's just round here, which it is.

19: Felt really good now, having caught 24mins on Allan. Considered taking a gel but I didn't really feel like I needed to. Contour and slightly up to the saddle, then straight up the spur. Along the top, crag ends and then it should be here somewhere... nope. Look around a bit and start to think I've gone too far. Allan's just behind and spots it just below. It's easier to see it was lower now looking at the quickroute, but that is a lot bigger.

20: This was bad but could have been a lot worse. I'd intended to bear to east of the line and go down till I hit the plateau and marsh but I was too lazy to go up the hill. That meant I had no real plan and just randomed down the hill. Found another control which wasn't it. Then stood there lost for a minute. Luckily Kris Jones appeared just above me and led me to the control. Allan got there just before me as well.

21: Whhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

22: No more mist. Contour, crags, control.

23: It was pretty easy now that you could actually see. I'd glanced at this control on the way to 1 and had decided that it'd be quicker to go down that little bit where it was flatter and less rocky. Worked well. Passed out Kris and fastest split!

24: Twas kinda cool now you could see. Saw a good few people going across ahead of us. So headed off in that direction. There were like four of us so I figured one of us was bound to see it. The others went a bit higher and I felt like we'd gone far enough. Stopped looked down and saw the control. Woot! Another fastest split!

25: Runrunrunrunrunrunrunrunrun, oh crap navigate, control! Wrong code! Too high! Boulders! Control! Runrunrun! right code!

Fin: Ghhhhhagggahhhh

So generally alright, a bit lucky. Surprisingly well able to run after not much training for a few weeks due to the knee and Mournes last week as well.

Other people affected my race a lot. Mostly for the better though, but still I should rely on them a bit less. Even though I was feeling good towards the end it probably would have been a good idea to take the gel and get some sugar in my brain.
