mountain biking 39:49 intensity: (3 @1) + (11:39 @2) + (22:46 @3) + (5:21 @4) 5.62 mi (7:05 / mi) +753ft 6:17 / mi
ahr:137 max:157 weight:140.5lbs

Testing out the mountain bike on a section of back roads up in Conway to see how it would compare to the same route on my road bike. Still need to do the route with the road bike, but mi guess is that the mountain bike is the better choice. Has a good bit lower gear, the brakes are much better, and the much wider tires are more stable. Disadvantage is it's a lot heavier.

Planning on doing an outing with Walter on some hilly dirt roads west of Brattleboro sometime in the near future...

mountain biking 1:28:25 intensity: (27:31 @1) + (1:00:54 @2) 10.26 mi (8:37 / mi) +132ft 8:31 / mi
ahr:103 max:125

Late afternoon on the mountain bike after most of the rain had stopped, though things were still wet. On the Montague sand plains to start, then wandered past some old spots I used to run in the winter, past the airport, then back across the plains trying out various trails that were much closer to bushwhacking than trails.

Quite fine, even if I got really hungry, should have had something to eat before I started. Had to compensate by just going slower. :-)

ahr:133 max:167

Very nice ride with Phil. He behaved himself remarkably well, took off a couple of times just because he can, but then waited up for me. Very civilized. :-)

Lots of back roads, little or no traffic, much of the time could ride abreast and chat without any risk nor pissing off drivers. Similar to the ride with Walter a few days ago, just extended it longer at the south end.

ahr:125 max:143 weight:139.5lbs

Set out with the goal of taking it easy and for once actually did so. Very enjoyable outing. :-)

Low 70s, S 5. Up the river, over the rail trail bridge and back down River Road. Lots and lots of cyclists out.

Now if I could just get Phil to ride at a similar pace tomorrow, then life would be fine. Can always hope.

ahr:136 max:166 weight:138.5lbs

Out early before the rain, just starting to sprinkle as I got done. Low 50s, N 0-5. I'd put my tights away and was too lazy to get them back out, so rode in shorts. Probably helped, a little chilly, but also refreshing. Felt better than during and after yesterday's ride when I was really beat.

ahr:130 max:162 weight:139.5lbs

With Walter, up along the river and then back over Cave Hill and via Leveratt. Company was great, energy levels were really low, so it was good that no one was in a hurry.

Been more than a couple of weeks without any exercise other than walking, so time to get back moving. About 70, S5.

A final day of wandering around Rome, stayed closer to the hotel but still lots to see. Rained off and on for the first couple of hours (first rain of the trip), so we took shelter once in a basement supermarket (fine way to check out the variety of fish, cheese, hams, plus a spot where a woman seemed to be caring slices off a whole roast pig, smelled delicious) and a second time in a church. It featured the only metal detector operation we saw in the city, plus lots of marble and gold, plus a dead pope, can't remember which one.

Then some ancient baths now partially a museum (with a display on Italian "borghi", villages that meet some sort of criteria, three of which it turned out we had been in on the trip, one in Sicilily, two south of Naples), and partially another church, not much gold and no popes to be seen but interesting nonetheless.

Then a bite to eat, one last bit of rain so we ducked into a semi-posh store that seemed to cater to Japanese almost exclusively, and then meandering around a little to the NE, not many tourists, always interesting, a lot of elegant residences, a bunch of grand hotels each with a fancy little enclosed restaurant on the sidewalk. And eventually back to our hotel, which was actually on the top (5th) floor, just 5 or 6 rooms, impeccable. Picked it by the digital equivalent of throwing darts. Sometimes you get lucky. :-)

Nice variety of things -- presidential palace, Trevi, some posh window shopping, a church at the P del Popolo where a funeral broke out in about 5 minutes just as we were leaving (the hearse arrived, flowers were carried in, then the coffin, then maybe 50-75 mourners were in, zip zip zip), an obelisk with hieroglyphics, the DaVinci museum, houseboats and scullers on the Tevere, a private luncheon, more palaces and castles, a distant view of the Vatican (as close as we needed to get), the gift shop for the underground stadium at P Navona, the Pantheon, S. Ignazio church (very fine), and a few more palaces. No guides, no itinerary, crowds not bad, weather was perfect. No complaints.

Best place for a selfie, in the DaVinci museum, a very small 8-sided room, just big enough for a couple of people, mirrors on all the walls --

Day 1 in Rome, on our own. Meandered down to the Colosseum through a pleasant (ie. not crowded) area of small shops and eating spots. Then a lengthy wander through the ancient forum and adjoining areas, all interesting, before heading back to where we'd started by a slightly different route. All low-key, the way I like it.

Yup, in Rome --

Pompei. Most striking was the scope, covered a lot of ground. Otherwise a little less interesting than I had expected.

At the very beginning of the Amalfi Coast. Walked from Raito to Albori, then ventured first up one path that quickly became overgrown, then along another that was very interesting, connecting to structures on the far side of the ravine. Would have been happy exploring further.

In Siricusa, exploring the old town in the late morning and early afternoon, then the Greek theater and Roman ruins in the late afternoon.

The Archimedes fountain in Siracusa --

Up to the south slopes of Etna, with a short hike up to a small crater. A bunch a guys there who had biked up from Catania, that would have been fun (50 km, 5,800' climb), or at least going home would have been fun.

Late in the day walk around Taormina, best part was a solo excursion to the public gardens, otherwise too crowded.

On the rim of a small and very inactive crater. Top of Etna was maybe 4-5,000' higher, and letting off steam (considered to be a good thing) --

To Taormina (where the G7 meeting is in a couple of weeks). Walk down to the beach and back, gorgeous.

And there were these Chinese women offering a variety of massage services --

To Castelbuono. Passed on the outing down to town, wandered in the hills a bit. Not worth a detour, though the place we stayed was excellent.

To Cefalu. Wandered around the old town a bit, then up the Rocca di Chefalu after lunch. Nice spot (the Rocca, town was pretty ordinary).

A visit to the Montreal cathedral above town, OK, then an outing to the beach north of Palermo. Too much to drink at dinner, though that was not necessarily a bad thing.

To Palermo. A bit of a wander around the center of the city and the harbor.

ahr:124 max:150 weight:141lbs

Trails north of Eaglebrook, mostly single-track, not particularly hilly. The one I started out on was about right for me, but then they got a little harder, so I was off the bike a number of times, only a couple of times unplanned. Enjoyed it nevertheless. Very slow pace because this stuff is difficult (for me).

ahr:133 max:154 weight:141lbs

Rain moved out and it was a nice sunny afternoon but very windy, so opted for the mountain bike. Up N Mt., down S. Mt. Wet and muddy by the time I was done, mighty fine.

ahr:127 max:161 weight:141.5lbs

Nice afternoon, upper 60s, S 5-10. Thought it was time for a (short) hill climb, and with my recent decision that riding on dirt roads is fine, I opted for the road past Eaglebrook School up Pocumtuck Ridge. Made it up (7:08) a little quicker than expected. Quite wasted at the top of course, but the rest of the ride was at an easy pace except when I was into the wind, and then it never seems easy.

ahr:133 max:158 weight:141.5lbs

Very windy, so I decided to go on the mountain bike, up South Mountain, then across and back North Mountain. I had an option to do a longer ride, but when I got to the top of S Mt and my legs were tired and it was almost all downhill back home the short, the decision got made rather quickly.

Still a lot of water on N MT, so a bunch more mud on both me and the bike.

To Whately and South Deerfield, upper 60s, W 5-10 mph. Nice afternoon.

Saw this guy this morning --

Mid 50s, overcast, SE 5. What would be called junk mileage in running. I would guess there's the same concept in biking. But, as is almost always the case, feel better for having gotten out and done something.
