ahr:115 max:134 weight:139lbs

Raining, so thought I would see if I can still run. Ran/walked for a couple of miles. Marginally successful, though left butt was not happy at all (just like 6 months ago), and I can't say I enjoyed it.

biking - red bike 2:35:16 intensity: (1:15 @1) + (1:31:14 @2) + (1:01:37 @3) + (1:10 @4) 40.18 mi (3:52 / mi) +1368ft 3:45 / mi
ahr:127 max:152 weight:139lbs

Longish outing up the valley to Gill and Northfield, avoiding hills as much as possible, though doing a mile or so of dirt road at one point. Light breeze from the north, so better on the way back. Pleasant morning.

biking - red bike 50:58 intensity: (2:08 @1) + (24:15 @2) + (24:15 @3) + (20 @4) 13.55 mi (3:46 / mi) +389ft 3:40 / mi
ahr:125 max:155 weight:139lbs

Whately - South Deerfield. Warm and humid. Very mellow to start, then decided to work each of the little ups, of which there are 10, so that made things a little more interesting. Though I must admit I quite enjoy just moseying along at a mellow pace.

Nice ride with Charlie after a short visit to Litchfield. Relaxed pace, good conversation, no falls.

ahr:134 max:155

And then on the way back to his place I stopped to try something I've been meaning to try for a long time -- biking up the Devil's Elbow. And it seemed especially the right time because I got my new low gear this morning (34-32, was 34-28). Very nice, made it up, not with a lot to spare, but not in any real danger of stalling. :-)

biking - red bike 2:54:51 intensity: (22 @1) + (28:26 @2) + (1:21:25 @3) + (55:32 @4) + (9:06 @5) 39.61 mi (4:25 / mi) +3649ft 4:04 / mi
ahr:144 max:165 weight:139lbs

Start in Charlemont, loop in the hills that they use for a bike race with the good guys doing two loops. Pretty hot out, breeze out of the NW.

Second time I've done this loop, the other was last summer, and it's the second time it has just flat out croaked me. Certainly could have used a second bottle, but still, right from the start not good, heart rate a good bit too high for the perceived effort. Miles 21 to 30 back into the wind and with more up than down were not fun. Though good willpower training, I suppose.

Really tired going up the hill at 30. Normally I ride a very straight line but here I noticed I was weaving quite a bit. Not really a safely issue -- almost no traffic and I could hear a car coming well before it arrived, and by then I was right where I wanted to be. I believe the technical term for my condition is "spacy." :-)

A few minutes later I was just whipping downhill, saying to myself, Careful, careful, careful. Trying really hard not to do anything stupid.

Back to the car, stopped at the first possible place for something to drink. Then drove home, really concentrating, again trying not to do anything stupid. More to drink and a nap and now maybe a bit more normal. Though the legs are clearly trashed.

ahr:114 max:134 weight:138.5lbs

On the flats west of the river. Nice to get out, but saw no reason to go further or faster. Gave a little thought to once up South Sugarloaf, but that thought passed...

ahr:118 max:140 weight:139.5lbs

To South Amherst and back, bit of a breeze from the south at times, and warm. Really working at, and possibly getting better at, making my easy days easy.

biking - red bike 3:10:10 intensity: (29 @1) + (42:00 @2) + (2:12:07 @3) + (15:34 @4) 48.83 mi (3:54 / mi) +2490ft 3:43 / mi
ahr:137 max:159 weight:139.5lbs

Went up to Bernardston to do a ride to raise a little money for the local Big Brothers Big Sisters operation. All roads I'd ridden before, some many times, but this got me out relatively early on a Sunday morning. And a nice morning it was, humidity a little lower than recently, sunshine, mostly light winds.

And the legs had a little life, got up the Warwick and Wendell hills with a good steady rhythm. Maybe the legs are showing a little life. Figured it would take a thousand miles on the new bike, and that's about what it's been.

Note

Time for an update on the "marathon money" and how it will be put to use. For background, see the original idea and the wonderful response to it. And then very recently, now 15 months after the marathon, a couple of rants by yours truly in this log about the lack of progress.

Note that rants on AP don't tend to accomplish anything other than usually pissing some other people off, so to the extent it did that, I apologize. However, there was also a good bit of follow-up, and then decisions. And all of that part has been productive and I think has gotten us to the right place.

So, there have conversations/e-mails with Peter Goodwin, Glen, Bill Langton (head of the Junior Team ESC), Erin, Barb, and a number of other folks who share an interest in having the best junior team possible, both now and in the future. Because it's fun to have more young people in the sport, and it's cool when they get a lot better.

It seemed there were three options for the use of the money (roughly 21-22K). The first, as perhaps many expected and I also expected when the idea was first hatched, was to support the 2015 JWOC team. The "problem" was that so much was donated that when they asked me for my opinion on how to spend it, I waffled, thinking 22K is a lot to throw at the 2015 JWOC team, so I muttered something about making the junior program both better and broader, and pretty much forgot about it.

That was interpreted as my not wanting to just spend it on the JWOC team, so it wasn't, and for quite a while things were in limbo as various other options were considered.

The second option seemed to revolve around the concept of a bunch of "training camps" for juniors scattered around the country, though there was concern about the process of making them all actually happen and also about how productive they would actually be.

The third option, suggested by Erin over the winter, was to set up a couple of "Centers of Excellence," one in the East and one in the West, and focus resources on these. But there was concern also with this idea about who would be driving the effort and how productive they would be.

And so time passed....

In discussions over the last week or so, it seems that there was a fourth option all along, really just a modification of the first option -- use the money to support the Junior Team directly (going to JWOC and assorted other events for preparation and training is all rather expensive), just spread it out over 2 or 3 years. I occasionally like to think that I have some intelligence, but this just never occurred to me. It certainly seemed reasonable. And adding support for our junior team to the North Americans in September made it even more reasonable.

But there was still the matter of the second and third options, training camps and centers of excellence, what about them?

My evaluation of both those options was that neither one of them were ready for prime time. Most importantly, although both had proponents, neither had willing and available people ready to step up and make them happen anytime soon. And that seemed to me the most important requirement. I would like to see both happen in the coming years, and in not too many years, but there needs to be a critical mass of people to make them happen, and I don't see that right now.

So we will go with the revised first option, revised to use it on more than just one JWOC Team, revised also to include in the mix what I think has become just as important an event for the Junior Team -- the North Americans and the match with Canada for the Future Champions Cup. So the money will be used to help get our best team possible there, and then also to get our best team possible to the next JWOC or two.

It took a while to get here, but at this point I'm feeling optimistic. I intend to continue my support of the junior program, notwithstanding what I might have said in rant #2... :-)

And to anyone who has followed along with this, and perhaps has contributed to the juniors in the past, I certainly hope that you will continue to do so in the future.

ahr:120 max:138 weight:139.5lbs

My regular route, River Road and Old Deerfield, done at a very mellow pace. A nice way to ride when it's hot, though I'm not sure if there is much training effect.

biking - red bike 1:37:21 intensity: (1 @1) + (39:03 @2) + (36:23 @3) + (15:02 @4) + (6:52 @5) 23.77 mi (4:06 / mi) +1516ft 3:52 / mi
ahr:136 max:165 weight:139lbs

Wanted to have another go at East Hawley Road (one of the finer climbs around here, up 1,250'). Last time I parked at the top and did a good-sized loop that ended with the climb. At the time that struck me as rather dumb, and my opinion has not changed.

So a more reasonable route this time. Started just outside Shelburne Falls, first a mellow 30 minutes along Route 2 to Charlemont, then the climb, then back down Claesson Brook Road and 112, can just let it go on the former, no potholes, no traffic, no brakes, and then put it in a high gear on 112 and you're back in SF in no time.

The climb was OK, 33:30 compared to 37:30 last time. Just a steady hard effort.

The only bummer was when I was done, there was an e-mail, Phil has been suffering again, was back in the hospital (though getting out today), more gut issues. Will go see him in a little while.

ahr:130 max:159 weight:138lbs

Nice day. Not so hot, not so humid, good breeze out of the NW. Stitched together a loop that hoped to be out in the open when going more or less SE, and in the hills/woods when going more or less NW. Reasonably successful, felt like I had the wind with me more than against me.

A lot of relaxed miles, not much working hard. One steepish hill, got up it OK.

----------

And making progress, I think/hope, on the use of the marathon money.

ahr:138 max:167 weight:138lbs

In Deerfield, Upper and Lower Roads loop and the Old Deerfield - River Road. Freshening breeze out of the south, hot and humid. Start out at a relaxed effort, but got more vigorous as the ride progressed. No falls.

ahr:121 max:135 weight:138lbs

Surprisingly nice ride, did several things right --

-- Went in the morning for once instead of mid/late afternoon. A lot more pleasant, back roads up along the river were gorgeous.

-- Before I left, raised my seat about half an inch. Pretty sure that is better, seemed to be less stress on the knees, and the one that has a sore spot wasn't complaining at all. Felt like it might be a good idea to raise it a little bit more.

-- And also adjusted the rear derailleur, it had been getting a little noisy and skipped a little under stress. Four clicks to the outside, clockwise. Quiet and smooth as can be, even coming up the driveway.

-- And working hard again to ride gently, goal was to keep the average under 120, almost made it.

Light breeze out of the south. Now will put the bike away for a couple of days, family stuff to take care of.

Note

Visiting Phil yesterday afternoon --

Every so often the gizmo controlling the flow from the IV bag would start beeping, and we'd look around nervously, and Phil would say that he was still alive, and eventually a nurse would show up and stop the beeping, with no apparent concern as to whether whatever had caused the beeping to start was serious or trivial. But Phil kept acting like he was quite alive.

And already setting plans for PR on the hospital mile. :-)

----------

OK, time to add a little more to the ED discussion, will do in a while, but the above is more important.

2 PM

biking - red bike 53:04 intensity: (1:06 @1) + (37:47 @2) + (14:11 @3) 13.57 mi (3:55 / mi) +399ft 3:48 / mi
ahr:124 max:144 slept:137.5

Hot, humid, and windy (pretty strong breeze out of the south), but a very pleasant ride. Really pleasant. It seems there is something to the theory that easy days are OK. Going uphill is always work (at least for me), but much nicer if you're not in a hurry, and then the rest of the time I was just focused on not trying too hard.

It's a nice combination -- you get some good exercise and sweat a bunch, but you don't have to worry about depleting your reserves of willpower.

And then even cleaner my bike afterwards, as I have been doing regularly. Who would have thought...

--------------

The Tour de France is quite a show this year (athletically, visually, dramatically). Especially the last three days of racing.

Note

An update from a cousin of mine who really really seems to have her head screwed on straight. Can't help but smile.

Note

Stopped by to visit Phil at the hospital. Stayed about an hour but then the doctor/surgeon was due so I headed off. The prognosis is on his page, some good (he'll live), some less good (at some point down the road he will probably have to say good-bye to some of his intestines).

His daughter Nora was there too. She is really cool. I was there for about an hour and the conversation was so easy about all sorts of things. But sorry, guys, but she already has a fellow.

Also measured his training loop, 132 yards as it turned out, pretty close to as advertised.

And also, just between my own two ears, worried. Because when you have a good friend, and they are suffering, it's just what you do.

11 AM

biking - red bike 27:17 intensity: (52 @1) + (15:38 @2) + (10:47 @3) 7.79 mi (3:30 / mi) +158ft 3:26 / mi
ahr:126 max:148 weight:138.5lbs

First corn ride of the season. There are much closer farm stands but they just aren't as good. Very nice tailwind for all but the first mile.

biking - red bike 30:48 intensity: (2:20 @2) + (27:23 @3) + (1:05 @4) 7.83 mi (3:56 / mi) +177ft 3:51 / mi
ahr:141 max:153

And the trip back, not such a nice headwind for all but the last mile.

----------

Found out just before I left that Phil is laid up in the hospital. It occurred to me on the ride home that what I was doing was in fact a training outing in honor of him.

Now realize that there are certain requirements to do a proper "Phil training," the principal ones being (1) that there must be pain involved either from the effort, or from various injured body parts, or both, and (2) that there must be some element of stupidity.

Without knowing I was in the process of doing a perfect Phil training. See, there was this slight matter of falling off my bike in the farm stand parking lot...

Note

To the discussion about the merits and demerits of the ED position, I would offer the following:

1. One analysis ought to be about the job -- what is/can/should be in the job description, and what the priorities ought to be. This is an area where there seems to be widely varying opinions and little consensus. That doesn't surprise me. If there were easy answers, we'd probably already be doing those things.

I think you need an ED. At what level (full time or 3/4 time or 1/2 time) and with what duties and priorities, those are tough questions.

2. Another analysis ought to be about the current occupant of the position and his performance in the job. Almost nothing has been said about this, though I think it is of prime importance; of course it can be difficult to discuss because it is by default personal.

My own experience with, and observations of, the current occupant is that he is not the person we need in the job, however the job is defined. Not even close.

3. Nothing (well, almost nothing) ever gets done by talking about it on AP.

I have made my efforts with the powers that be to push for change, with no success. Under the current leadership nothing is going to change.

4. And finally, to all of the wonderful folks who read this log and 15 months ago responded to my suggestion and made significant donations to support the Junior Team, I am distressed to offer you this report card --

-- I became aware in March, 11 months after the roughly 22K of donations were made, that virtually none of it had been spent. Proposals by the Junior Coach had been essentially vetoed by the President and the ED. I'm not aware of any involvement of the Junior Team ESC. Needless to say, I expressed my dismay, and also my view that the money was not donated in order to spend the rest of its days in the bank.

-- In checking this month, now 15 months later, it seems there is still almost no progress. The following was in the minutes of the recent Board meeting in Laramie:

"$22,000 raised by Peter Gagarin will be used to promote junior development over 3 years. The main focus is to use the funds to expand the sport to all and not be reserved for the elites. Funds are available for all disciplines (foot, mtbo, ski, trail). Erin Schirm will travel to facilitate or totally organize training. Glen and Greg Lennon will work on the marketing of this to the clubs. Erin will coordinate with the clubs on what will happen at the training sessions. This initiative is still in the planning stages so clubs should contact Glen Schorr."

-- So, 15 months later (1) things are still in the planning stage (under the leadership of our ED), (2) the original contributions were $21,928 for the Junior Team, by which I and I believe others meant the Junior Foot-O Team, plus $514 for the Junior Ski-O Team, plus $674 for the Senior Foot-O Team, plus $241 undesignated, and (3) funds are being offered for use to all disciplines and it seems for whatever purpose anyone can dream up, which doesn't seem to track with the stated purpose of the donations.

And they can't even get that done.

To all of you I offer my apologies. I thought the marathon fundraiser was a really good thing. But it has come to this...

Leverett loop clockwise. Nice conditions, not near as hot, maybe upper 70s, and hardly any wind. Ended up putting out an increasingly hard effort, not that that was intended. Some things just happen. And I suppose that some days of almost no effort might leave you with a little more zip when you eventually decide to try and use it.

That plus the sharpening workout yesterday evening... :-)

hand-to-hand combat 2:00 [4]

At first I thought I would just ignore it for the time being, but would try to remember to set traps before going to bed. But the mouse ran across in front of me (and my bare feet) once too often as I sat watching the tube (a replay of Germany-France). Had to do something.

I was still trying to formulate a plan when it scooted out into the kitchen, where Gail was hard at work. By then I had armed myself with a magazine of moderate substance, and I was right on its tail, figuratively, pausing just a moment to alert Gail -- "Mouse!"

She hopped a bit but neither screamed nor fainted, but rather was very quick at answering my request for another weapon, in this case one of my treasured O' awards, a red yardstick from CNYO-land, just perfect for measuring snow depths.

Now doubly armed, I had the mouse cornered in the back of the kitchen, seemingly in control, except I expected at any moment it would disappear into some hole or shoot under the fridge. But it didn't.

And so I commenced my version of W's (and Rummy's) "Shock and Awe." Many swings with both weapons, mostly misses, but I think the poor thing was quite terrified and thus mostly frozen in its tracks. At some point contact was made, and then more contact, and then quickly it was over, disposal in the trash which conveniently goes out in the morning.

And as to damage to yours truly, I avoided the cardiac that Gail feared might be imminent, though my right shoulder, somewhat sore of late, seemed not to have appreciated the sudden and violent exercise, and the yardstick, the result of one errant blow that connected only with the oven, is now a mere 33".

No time to strap on the HR monitor, so no data, but the pump was ticking along pretty speedily... :-)

ahr:118 max:161 weight:141lbs

Warm, humid, bad air, so a short ride just to sweat a little. And a couple of trips up nearby Claybrook Road. It's a nice little climb, might have to try to do it more often. I think it averages about 7%, up to something like 12-14% at the steepest.

I was thinking some about why I'm doing the biking. Partly, I don't feel like running. Partly, I really do feel better when I exercise regularly. And partly, being in better shape means there is the possibility for an occasional adventure.

But there is also no need to put out regular hard efforts. Sometimes they are fun, a test of how you are doing. More often they are just hard. I think sometimes I would be better off leaving the watch at home, just go out, at some point come back. But I doubt that will happen.

There are still a few things of a physical nature that I'd like to do this year. None of them are competitive. And none of them involve orienteering.

Wanted a change of scenery so I started in Bernardston, then to Northfield, Hinsdale (NH), Brattleboro (VT) and back to Bernardston. Nice loop, good roads, not much traffic. And the only hills are climbing up out of Brattleboro, and they're not long.

Started easy, slowly put out a little more effort, testing the knees in particular. Seemed to be OK. So a very pleasant outing.

And rode for a while in my 50-11 because it was feeling unappreciated.

Very gentle ride up the river and back. Been taking a few days off because it seemed like a reasonable thing to do, give a few aches a chance to calm down.

Was in Litchfield a couple of days dealing with things there. With a little luck everything there will be wrapped up in 4 weeks, but in the meantime I still have a few trips more to do.
