12 PM

road running 1:07:54 [3] 7.56 mi (8:59 / mi) +464ft 8:29 / mi
weight:137.5lbs shoes: pegasus 4

Lower and Upper Roads in Deerfield, pleasant enough outing, legs not terrible, just trying to do 9-minute pace. Though the idea of doing the loop 2.5 more times seems a bit much.

It's too late to do any really long runs. Plan for the next couple of weeks is leave the mileage about the same but run fewer days, so maybe 35 in 5 days this week and in 4 days next week. Then easy the last week and see how it goes three weeks from today.

Map from the middle (click on map for a larger version). I seem to have botched 2, 6, and 12. Didn't think it was a good run.

10 AM

road running 9:59 [2] 0.97 mi (10:18 / mi) +181ft 8:45 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

Warm-up, from the lodge up to the start.

orienteering 33:28 [2] 2.06 mi (16:15 / mi) +344ft 14:02 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

Middle champs, M70.

Not much redeeming value in that "run". Physically didn't have any zip, nor mentally either it seemed. Glad when it was over, and not much need to revisit the details. :-)

The good part of the day was not having to be on the RP. I've enjoyed doing that in the past, but this time it seemed preferable to beg out, and that felt like exactly the right thing to do.

Overall the long weekend was a lot of fun. I'm continually impressed by how much work OCIN does, putting on the Flying Pig every spring. It's often not my favorite terrain, but they do a very good job. As they did this weekend. Thank you.

road running 10:54 [2] 1.1 mi (9:55 / mi) +180ft 8:35 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

And back to the lodge, up one more hill, just to get my target for the week. :-)

Legs actually felt better than when I was orienteering, chugged right up the hill. The difference was the pavement.

11 AM

road running 13:21 [2] 1.3 mi (10:16 / mi) +120ft 9:27 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Wam-up, from the lodge over to the start and a bit more around and about there. Hands (well, fingertips) getting very cold.

orienteering 38:26 [3] 3.0 mi (12:49 / mi) +327ft 11:37 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Long champs, M70, 3.8 beeline. OK.

Quite happy that this "long" course didn't take too long -- looked at the Green course and it was substantially longer and harder and it would have been just a long slog. And Red and Blue....

Not much in the way of problems, and I think my routes were mostly the right choices. Not a particularly inspired course, but it could have been much much worse. For example by putting us in the green a lot. Spent quite a bit of time on trails of one sort or another, but that suited me just fine.

road running 10:01 [2] 0.88 mi (11:23 / mi) +210ft 9:17 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

From the finish back to the lodge. Ran all the way up the hill without too much difficulty, but had it in a very low gear.

road running 21:04 [2] 2.06 mi (10:14 / mi) +260ft 9:08 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

Stopped to change shoes and then a loop around the golf course. Legs feeling pretty trashed, moving slow. But good to get it done.

Note

My sprint map (click on map for a larger version). On comparing routes on my second run, splits showed no difference on 1-2 and 2-3 for left vs. right. I'm pretty sure lower was better on both 6-7 and 9-10, but I didn't test the upper route. And left was slower by 10 seconds on 12-13. (And my route to 12 was certainly slower.)

4 PM

road running 18:58 [3] 2.01 mi (9:26 / mi) +4ft 9:25 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Good warm-up on a rather cold day. Finished about 10 minutes before my start, just about right.

orienteering 16:08 [4] 1.67 mi (9:40 / mi) +192ft 8:43 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Sprint champs, M70, 1.9 straight line. Reasonably mediocre. Thought my one miss was at 12, down when I should have been up. But rerunning the course reminded me of mistakes leaving 6 (not knowing which way to go, and changing my mind), and leaving 7 (not having a plan to get up to the upper road, so once again diddling at the start of the leg), and once more, leaving 10 (not having realized had to swing around to the left).

Mental laziness in all cases, just not looking ahead at all.

Excellent map and course.

road running 5:15 [2] 0.52 mi (10:06 / mi)
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Cold almost immediately, so jogged back to the start/parking.

orienteering 14:55 [4] 1.58 mi (9:26 / mi) +218ft 8:21 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

And once there, put my long-sleeved shirt and hat back on. And then it occurred to me that, since today was supposed to have some more running, why not run the course again. Mike Minium said it was OK, I'd been about the last starter, so off I went.

Took different routes whenever it was possible. No mistakes, of course. Ran at a just slightly less effort than the first run. Splits showed clearly that each of my three diddles cost about 10 seconds, and the bigger mistake about 30 or so. A good teaching lesson.

road running 5:37 [2] 0.58 mi (9:41 / mi) +281ft 6:38 / mi
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And then a final jogeroo back to the start, with Alex this time.

And a decent effort for the day, about 6, about what I hoped for.

I've never had a car detailed. In fact my car tends towards the other end of the clean-chaos scale. But the place I park at Bradley offers various basic maintenance services while you're gone, from washing the car to oil changes to detailing. And this time my car got the full treatment, all of the above, washing, oil change, detailing. Cool.

The only problem was I didn't order any of it.

So it was quite the surprise when they asked if I wanted to put the roughly 240 bucks on the same credit card as usual. Even I can figure out that's a lot to pay for 5 days parking unless you're in Manhattan.

We had a lively discussion for a while. They pulled out their half of the parking claim ticket, and pointed out that I had signed the back where the the services were spelled out. Actually, not signed but initialed. On close inspection, I'd apparently used the initials WB and also used quite a different handwriting.

I took them a while to come to grips with the fact that they had fucked up. Still questioned me suspiciously for a while. Multiple phone calls to the manager or boss as to what to do. When what to do should have been painfully obvious, tell the customer the usual "Have a good day" and send him on his way, and then figure out if any systems or controls needed to be changed.

But they strung me along a little, so time to fight back.

Hmm, by the way, what kind of oil did you put in it? My car takes synthetic oil. They look at the service slip. Regular oil.

Change it.

So my fine Subaru has now had two oil changes and looks as clean as when I first got it. And I'm sure it is happy. And as for me, I got home 45 minutes later than expected, but given travel these days, if that's the worst that happens on a trip, that's not so bad.

Trails at Richard Russell SP. The usual struggle.

I think I orienteered here about 20 years ago. Will have to check my records.

road running 56:13 [3] 5.79 mi (9:43 / mi) +501ft 8:59 / mi

Ran the cart path around the Jones 18. Very pleasant, light rain so no one out. And certainly cooler than yesterday, so made it up all the hills, though the last one was not with much to space.

But good willpower getting it done. Had just finished tromping around the other 18 in the rain, up and down, so the legs already had done a little work. Felt tired for the run, but not too bad.

Hitchcock Woods in Aiken, SC. 5:30 pm and it was still 75F, and I was dehydrated to start, so I was croaked pretty solidly. One of those runs where all you can say is, At some point in the future this will do me some good.

Blowing hard enough outside that inside was preferable. Included 4 half miles at 8-minute pace and then one at 7:30. Never felt hard, though I also wasn't inclined to try one more at 7-minute pace.

Watching CNBC. Better than the other options (CNN, TNT, FoxNews, and a couple others I haven't identified), but still needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Well, this was OK. Not sure how much I wanted to do and it was windy and snowing outside, so the treadmill beckoned. Legs were tired to start, but then better.

A mile at 9-minute pace, then alternating quarters at 8- and 9-minute pace. Time actually passed rather quickly.

What counts for a long run these days, and it felt like it, felt beat by halfway, walked up one hill for 1:40. Better change those odds to 50-20-5. Though I will keep trying. :-)

Though maybe it was just the effect of the depressing podcast I was listening to. Fresh Air is my stand-by and it is almost always enjoyable, plus I usually learn something, even sometimes something useful, like the existence of Better Call Saul which I have been enjoying even though I never saw Breaking Bad.

But FA only lasts for 45 minutes, whereas This American Life goes for an hour, so today it was TAL, a show from a couple of months ago (though apparently a rebroadcast from 2006) about things or feelings that seem to last forever.

Four episodes, the subjects were being made fun of in school, being rejected by a girlfriend, an unusual real estate deal, and a joke for which there was never quite the right time to tell it.

And four protagonists. And I would say that 3.5 of them were jerks. I'm trying to be charitable.

So it wasn't particularly funny, or enlightening, or interesting. I was left to wonder why Ira put together such a show, and then why 8 years later he queued it up for a rerun.

Or maybe just my grumpiness asserting itself? And it has to affect my energy levels, right? :-)

From the bottom of Whately Glen Road, thought I would see if it was runnable, plus it's reasonably protected from the wind. It was runnable, but only up to the top of the first hill, after that it hadn't been plowed. Surely runnable for anyone stronger/younger, but not me, not today.

So back down with a very short detour to check out a snowmobile trail, also too soft for me.

Back to the car much sooner than expected, so decided that 5 times up the first little hill would make it a sufficient enough outing that I could go home without embarrassment. 1:45, 1:42, 1:41, 1:40, and 1:36 for the ups.

Saw several bikers out, hardy souls.

Boston odds: starting - 50%, finishing - 25%, finishing under 4 - 10%. This has been a decent week.

Snowmobile trails in Conway. First time this year on them. Conditions were pretty good, just a little soft and slippery where the sun had hit them more.

As for my running, well, if you put it in a low enough gear, you can run up quite a few hills.

Back and sciatica still not good, but saw the doc this morning and she said exercise was fine as long as it didn't hurt. And running and walking don't hurt.

Meanwhile, the excess weight is starting to come off. The hard part (shrinking the stomach) is done.

Note

What's all this white stuff?

Sciatic has changed course, thought it was disappearing, but back in spades. First part of the first flight today (Albuquerque to Dallas) was miserable, rest of it and then up to Hartford at least tolerable. Need to get it figured out.

A very nice trip. Went a bunch of places in New Mexico we hadn't been, lots of parks and wildlife refuges, enough golf to keep me happy. Weather was OK, often (very) windy, sometimes cold, but a whole lot better than home and nothing we couldn't deal with. Would have been happy to do more running, maybe a decent hike, but that wasn't to be. Still, a good time and some very good memories.

Seemed like I was breathing harder than I expected. Didn't remember until after I was done that we're at 4,800', which for me is enough to make a difference.

Been having sciatic issues the last three or four days, woke me up a bunch of times for a couple of nights, but last night was much better. So maybe it is on the way out.

And still dealing with the remnants of various cacti from last weekend that seem to be embedded. One little spine seemed to be digging into the nerve on top of my bionic big toe, got about 10' down the hall to breakfast before I couldn't take the pain anymore. Limped back to the room where a tape job from Gail and different shoes got me going again.

Just more things falling apart. But so far none have been terminal. :-)

Otherwise, our exploration of the Gadsden Purchse, more or less -- SE Arizona, southern New Mexico and even a bit of Texas -- has been quite fine, though it is also almost over. Doing our best to avoid winter, and the little we've run into hasn't lasted too long or been too hard to take. The plan was that all the snow would be gone by the time we got home, but I gather that may not be the case.
