Note

One thing I forgot about yesterday -- one of the nice things about cool temperatures is that you sweat less. They had maybe half a dozen aid stations, plus people standing along the road handing out Gu at a couple of other places. Took neither drink nor food the whole time, and felt no worse for wear.

So much better than hot weather, when I croak.

1 PM

road running 40:33 [3] 4.45 mi (9:07 / mi) +214ft 8:43 / mi
rhr:53 weight:134lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Legs a little sluggish but not near as bad as they might be.

One of my standard loops, has about a mile and a half of wide and easy trail, still about 50% ice. A few warmish days will take care of that.

Listened to a Freako show about bitcoins, expected to learn something. Totally disappointing. I think it's time to give up on them (Freako, that is), still have no idea whether bitcoins are a total scam, or the wave of the future, or something in between.

Note

So the question is, now what? Still need to keep up the training, plus shift over part of it to trails and woods (and do some orienteering), but the problem with that, even more so than on the roads, is to keep from getting hurt. Being stronger should help a little, but I think the main thing is to hope you have luck on your side. It's so easy to trip on something or step in a hole you don't see, and wrench something. Just have to stay lucky.

And still have my eye on the marathon in Burlington in 8 weeks. Hope/expectation is somewhere around 3:45.

11 AM

road running race 1:40:17 [4] 13.1 mi (7:39 / mi) +431ft 7:25 / mi
weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Westfield half marathon.

Most likely as good as I can do these days. Other than a bit of the wobbles at the top of each hill, the legs felt great. And the weather, though not perfect, was pretty close to what suits me -- upper 30's, light rain only the last couple of miles, wind 10-15 mph out of the NNE. Get rid of the wind, fill the potholes, get rid of the puddles from the heavy rain overnight and it would have been perfect, but the most important factor, the temperature, was right where I like it.

Short-term preparation seems to have been just about right. Short run on Friday, day off yesterday, heavy meal (i.e. lots of fat) for dinner last night, equivalent of a PB&J sandwich for breakfast with some OJ and some Coke, and about a half-mile warm-up.

Long-term preparation was excellent, weekly mileage slowly but steadily increased over the last 4 months or so to about 45 the last several weeks, and the G was where I want it. And all the running, including today's race, in heavier training shoes, hoping to protect the feet and the legs a little more at the expense of a few seconds.

My expectation was about 1:45, or 8-minute pace, with the hope obviously to be under that rather than over. The course is such that the hills come early, with the last of them before 8 miles, so I figured 8-minute pace for that part, and then 8-minute pace on the rest would allow for getting tired.

But, as I said, the legs felt wonderful, and the miles just kept going by a little faster than I expected. That is so much fun -- regular feedback and it is always positive. Put the foot on the accelerator a little more after 8 miles against my better judgement, and expected to crash well before the finish came, but only the last mile was hard mentally and a bit of willpower kept the pace through that. At 10 miles I'd looked at my watch and saw I needed to do the last 5k in under 23 to get under 1:40, and given that the 5k I ran a week ago was 22:30, I figured no way, and stopped thinking about it. Came a lot closer than expected.

For reference, I remember three other times running a half marathon where the legs felt great and the time was surprisingly good. The first was at Westfield, a different but similar course, 1:22:45 at age 51. The second was also at Westfield, 1:27:30 at age 61. The third was at New Bedford, 1:33:15 at age 65. And this time, 1:40:17 at age 69.

It is a losing battle, and each added year you seem to lose at a faster and faster rate. But I seem to find it fun to keep trying.

Note

Passed 500 miles for the year so far. Clint seems stuck at 498.... :-)

1 PM

road running 29:09 [3] 3.41 mi (8:34 / mi) +29ft 8:30 / mi
rhr:54 weight:131.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Short run, but out of gas anyway it seemed. 35F and rain, thinking I might get cold but actually was overheating. So feeling rather feeble by the end.

When I was changing into running clothes, CNN was going on about the airplane that disappeared what seems like a long time ago. When I was changing back into work clothes, CNN was still going on about it.

I gather this is all they cover these days? Hard to imagine that anyone with any backbone works there.

road running 1:24:15 [3] 9.72 mi (8:40 / mi) +909ft 7:58 / mi
weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Out in the hills to the west. Long uphill but not steep, a little steeper coming back down. Good run.

Slowly getting back to feeling more positive about TAL. Though the last episode in what I listened to today, about Ira's pet pit bull, was pretty weird. It probably says a lot about Ira, some admirable, some that he's nuts. Not sure what it might say about his judgment when it comes to selecting segments for the show.

But it was certainly entertaining.

1 PM

road running 41:45 [3] 4.49 mi (9:19 / mi) +184ft 8:58 / mi
weight:132lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Not a particularly appealing day, sort of cold, overcast, very windy, so figured I might as well spice it up by do a route with what turned out to be about a mile and a half of ice. Though no big deal in this case as there were no bad slopes to negotiate.

Spring is coming, really.

track 17:33 [3] 3.2 km (5:29 / km)
weight:133lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

At the indoor track with Dave, probably the last time for the season as the community open hours end next Monday and I don't think it would be wise to encourage Phil, my other means of access, to head to the track anytime soon (though if he feels a need to go to a track, I'm guessing the Smith one is a whole lot better than the rectangular one at UMass).

track 20:39 [4] 4.8 km (4:18 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Dave's suggestion this time for making up our usual 3 miles of faster running was 400, 800, 800, 400, 400, 800, 800, 400, which seemed fine with me, didn't much matter. Took the first bit easy as I hadn't done anything faster in the warm-up, and then very gradually a little quicker. Legs weren't exactly spry, but not awful either, and moving at a decent pace by the end.

1:49, 3:35, 3:32, 1:41, 1:39, 3:26, 3:23, 1:34. roughly 90 seconds rest after the 800s, 45 after the 400s.

track 8:14 [3] 1.6 km (5:09 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And a few more laps.

Seemed to have managed the workout without doing any damage. As usual when that is the case after a run, count my blessings.

1 PM

road running 1:12:40 [3] 8.15 mi (8:55 / mi) +1009ft 7:59 / mi
rhr:51 weight:132lbs shoes: pegasus #3

In the hills west of the rotary. Steady climb up Old Shelburne Road, not easy but I could have felt a lot worse, so that is progress. And then after several dips and ups, cruising down South Shelburne Road, hands getting very cold. Legs will probably feel like crap tomorrow.

Sunday Mar 23, 2014 #

Note

Nice to hear that the sprints went well today. Also nice to see more juniors doing well.

12 PM

road running 1:08:59 [3] 8.3 mi (8:19 / mi) +332ft 8:01 / mi
rhr:51 shoes: pegasus #3

A rare run from home this time of year, but went to Litchfield last night and back by midday after dropping off my brother at the airport, so plenty of time to do it here.

One of my old stand-bys, around both Sugarloafs. Legs felt pretty good, so just focused on being as relaxed as possible and the miles zipped by.

Entertainment mostly about opera singing and cannibals.

Saturday Mar 22, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 58:44 [3] 6.68 mi (8:48 / mi) +167ft 8:35 / mi
rhr:52 weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Tried a bit on the trails and it was all ice with varying degrees of traction. So I guess I will stay on the roads a little longer. It will be a shock to the system the first few times off the pavement.

Very very glad not to be out in California this weekend. Not that I ever had an intention of going.

Friday Mar 21, 2014 #

7 AM

track 20:22 [3] 3.8 km (5:22 / km)
weight:133lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Back to the track, just because I felt like it, on my own this time. Still spring break, so pretty empty, a few walkers in the outer lanes and no other runners. Usual warm-up.

track race 22:31 [4] 5.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And then a test at 5K. Not what I had hoped for (closer to 22). Started just a touch slower than the pace I was intending (7:10), with the plan then being to go progressively just a little faster, that's the preferred way of pacing these things. But every time I felt like I was trying to pick it up a little, I come around and the next lap would be no better. So not one of those really nice, but rather rare, days when the legs feel light.

But hung in there at least, 1600's in 7:14, 7:15, 7:12, and 50 for the last 200. So at least a good training run if not a time to be thrilled by.

track 4:32 [3] 0.8 km (5:40 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And then a final slow 800. And done for the day. :-)

Thursday Mar 20, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 51:44 [3] 6.03 mi (8:35 / mi) +181ft 8:21 / mi
rhr:48 weight:132lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Not much energy, maybe still a little tired from last Sunday. Strange, though, felt better at the top of the one hill, and then felt better again the last few minutes going a little faster. Don't know whether it was psychological of physiological, or both. But at least it dispersed the negative feeling (i.e. who are you kidding, you think you are going to run a marathon....) from early in the run.

And that's without considering that the long-term plan included running another ultra. :-)

Wednesday Mar 19, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:10:15 [3] 8.13 mi (8:38 / mi) +573ft 8:06 / mi
weight:134lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Roads north of town. Nothing exciting. Cold and gray, felt a lot colder than the 37F it was supposed to be, hands were freezing. But always good to get out and do something.

Less than 4 weeks....

Tuesday Mar 18, 2014 #

7 AM

track 20:53 [3] 3.8 km (5:30 / km)
weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Indoor track with Dave. Legs still tired from Sunday though not as dead as yesterday. And tired, not sore, so that's OK.

Usual warm-up.

track 20:41 [4] 4.8 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

Neither one of us was very enthusiastic. Dave suggested a mixing 800s and 400s so that's what we did, 8-8-4-8-8-4-8, with a 5-minute cycle for the 8s and 2:30 for the 4s.

3:31, 3:31, 1:41, 3:28, 3:27, 1:40, 3:24. Didn't feel easy because I was tired, but didn't feel hard either.

track 5:30 [3] 1.0 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then a few easy laps and off to work.

Monday Mar 17, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 26:47 [2] 3.06 mi (8:45 / mi) +55ft 8:36 / mi
rhr:51 weight:132lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Short outing, legs tired from yesterday.

Sunday Mar 16, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:48:08 [3] 13.1 mi (8:15 / mi) +432ft 8:00 / mi
rhr:51 weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus #3

The Westfield Half new course, though I didn't quite get it right at either the start or the finish. Cool and windy, the latter often in my face for a long time but the last 4 miles or so had a nice tailwind. Legs not too bad.

road running 16:39 [3] 1.94 mi (8:35 / mi) +64ft 8:19 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

Walked for 50 yards, and then figured I might as well get the rest of the planned 15 done. More of a struggle. But another week done.

Planning to running the half in the actual race two weeks from now.

Saturday Mar 15, 2014 #

5 PM

road running 26:15 [3] 3.01 mi (8:43 / mi) +9ft 8:42 / mi
rhr:50 weight:132lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Short and easy.

Friday Mar 14, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:03:27 [3] 7.59 mi (8:22 / mi) +378ft 7:59 / mi
rhr:52 weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Road loop north of town. Another day where it feels more like winter, upper 20s and windy, but still a lot better than hot and humid. Legs felt OK.

Thursday Mar 13, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 44:11 [3] 4.86 mi (9:05 / mi) +318ft 8:33 / mi
weight:133lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Cold and very windy, but the sun was out and only a dusting of snow, so it seemed better to go outside than run on the treadmill. Which it was.

Lots of ice but not very slippery. Only problem was I really didn't need the extra pair of pants and extra shirt, so I was feeling both too warm and sluggish.

Listened to a recent Wait Wait, especially enjoyed a bit with Jim Bouton, who wrote Ball Four a long time ago. Should read it. What I remember from today was his comment that he (a Yankee) loved to pitch in Fenway Park, and that he usually pitched well there.

I think that's true for lots of sports. If you like the venue, or even if you can persuade yourself to like the venue, then you will probably do better, whereas if you are sure you hate the venue, the odds of a good performance really drop. Goes for running or skiing or orienteering or golf, or even baseball I gather.

Wednesday Mar 12, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 45:19 [3] 5.28 mi (8:35 / mi) +102ft 8:25 / mi
rhr:52 weight:134lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Side streets in Greenfield, light rain but not unpleasant, just putting in a few more miles.

Signed up for the Burlington (VT) marathon, see if I can stay healthy for two and a half more months, while slowly upping the mileage. Any side benefit in the way of being in better shape for O' is just an extra.

And five weeks left to the 15th. Getting short.

Tuesday Mar 11, 2014 #

7 AM

track 20:22 [3] 3.8 km (5:22 / km)
weight:135lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Tuesday morning, so at the indoor track with Dave -- will Phil return some day? -- even though it's supposed to be balmy out today. Usual warm-up, a couple of miles and then a little faster.

track 22:28 [3] 5.2 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

Same as last week, 6 x 800 on a 5-minute cycle, except I didn't try to get progressively quicker, just kept to about 3:30. So no heavy breathing. And then a 400 run hard, 90.5, not sure whether that is encouraging or discouraging, probably a little of both.

track 4:21 [3] 0.8 km (5:26 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And a half mile to wrap it up. And nice to be done, as usual.

Monday Mar 10, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 34:49 [3] 4.04 mi (8:38 / mi) +74ft 8:29 / mi
rhr:53 weight:134lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Short outing in Greenfield, not especially inspired but got it done.

Sunday Mar 9, 2014 #

8 AM

road running 1:29:41 [3] 10.22 mi (8:47 / mi) +804ft 8:10 / mi
weight:133lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Another loop in CT, this time early morning on the way to mom's. One good hill. Not real zippy but got it done. Route.

Entertainment from the Steve Carolla show, just right, lasted 90 minutes, and got me smiling quite a few times.

Saturday Mar 8, 2014 #

5 PM

road running 43:12 [3] 5.0 mi (8:38 / mi) +56ft 8:33 / mi
rhr:54 weight:133.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Tired legs today. But got a lot done at work, so pleased with the day.

Friday Mar 7, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:08:38 [3] 7.37 mi (9:19 / mi) +877ft 8:22 / mi
rhr:49 weight:133.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

A little bit north of town for a change. Two serious hills, the first one just slightly steeper. Got up it OK, then got up the second one OK, and then it was about done. Lovely day, sunny and about 32F, but there was a breeze, so the hat and gloves kept going on and off.

Trying a new podcast, Welcome to Night Vale, listened to the first three episodes, figured I might as well start at the beginning just in case I liked it. And I rather liked it. So 39 more episodes to tune in to.

Note

There are all sorts of different people in this world, and their brains work in different ways, good at some things, not so good at others.

(me) How much did you spend on day care last year?

(her) $210 a week.

(me) All year long?

(her) Yes, every single week. So, that's times 56 weeks.

(me, gently) 52

(him, who has hardly said a thing so far) Oh, I thought it was 54.

I had to repress a big smile.

1 PM

road running 1:12:55 [3] 8.5 mi (8:35 / mi) +465ft 8:09 / mi
rhr:49 weight:133.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Nice sunny day even if still a little chilly. A few minutes on a snowmobile trail, icy enough to be somewhat unpleasant, at least on the old bridge over the river they had put up mesh on both sides so even if I slipped, I wasn't going to fall off. The things we take comfort in....

A couple of fasters bits towards the end. Legs felt like they were working but the breathing didn't pick up. I suppose that's a good thing?

Finished up listening to Huck Finn. Entertaining enough that I stuck with it, though at times I wasn't sure why. Time for something new now.

Wednesday Mar 5, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 54:04 [3] 6.23 mi (8:40 / mi) +429ft 8:09 / mi
rhr:48 weight:133.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Over to Turners Falls for a change, so a couple of decent hills. First one was OK, but after 3 or 4 miles the legs seemed real tired and I was not looking forward to the hill back up to Greenfield. But started up, changed gears just slightly, and went up without the slightest difficulty, easy as could be. Fifteen minutes earlier I'd been struggling on the flat. Who knows.

Tuesday Mar 4, 2014 #

7 AM

track 20:30 [3] 3.8 km (5:24 / km)
weight:134lbs shoes: pegasus #3

At the indoor track with Dave. About 0F outside so nice to be inside. Usual warm-up, a couple of miles and then a little bit faster.

track 20:23 [3] 4.8 km (4:15 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

6 x 800 on a 5-minute cycle. 3:31, 3:31, 3:24, 3:24, 3:19, 3:14. Last one had me breathing hard the way I remember intervals used to be. I think over the years I've lost a lot of the ability to really push myself.

track 5:21 [3] 1.0 km (5:21 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And a short warm-down.

And nice to see a sign up that the track will be open to the public (6-8 am) until the end of the month, had been scheduled to stop at the end of this week.

Monday Mar 3, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 26:41 [3] 3.12 mi (8:34 / mi) +36ft 8:28 / mi
rhr:50 weight:133.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Short outing, legs a little sluggish. And felt cold out.

Sunday Mar 2, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:47:45 [3] 12.83 mi (8:24 / mi) +733ft 7:58 / mi
weight:134lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Trying another new loop on the way home, this time in East Granby, CT. Felt a little weak on the hills in the first few miles, then surprisingly OK for the mostly flat miles, then wilted in the last mile. But good progress. And another good week of training.

Made it through a good bit of Huck Finn, entertaining enough and pretty easy to listen to.

Mom continues to fade. It would be nice if the end game is relatively easy and quick. I think it is more likely to be the former than the latter. But there is absolutely no way of knowing.

Saturday Mar 1, 2014 #

5 PM

road running 39:08 [3] 4.73 mi (8:16 / mi) +308ft 7:48 / mi
rhr:48 weight:133.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Got out just before dark, did the Lovers Lane loop from the office before heading home. Put out a little harder effort than normal. The idea being to tire the legs a little, so tomorrows planned little bit longer run is harder, so it does more good. Maybe.

A while back (actually, quite a while back) the same effort would have been 7-minute pace. On the other hand, a few months ago the same effort would have been 9-minute pace. :-)
