road running 45:27 [3] 5.16 mi (8:48 / mi) +258ft 8:24 / mi

A few more miles. At some point this will get easier and quicker, or at least that's the theory.

Might try to go to Forest Park for the 5K on Saturday. The weather looks OK and I haven't been for a while.

And work is starting to get real busy. The plan is that this is my last year, but nothing is ever done until it is done.

road running 53:12 [3] 6.17 mi (8:38 / mi) +173ft 8:24 / mi
weight:139lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Side streets in Greenfield, included about a mile in the snow on a bike path along the river. First couple of miles onto the wind were cold, but then the last couple the other way weren't.

Had the great pleasure and honor of a visit last night from a member of our gang of 5, a certain Ms. Crocker. Even now, somewhat older than when she used to live in the valley, she is still cool. Put her up in Alex's suite. :-)

Monday Jan 27, 2014 #

treadmill 53:20 [3] 6.0 mi (8:53 / mi)
weight:139lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Just didn't feel like running outside today, so an hour on the treadmill watching some soap opera (whatever is on NBC at 1 in the afternoon).

Most interesting were two pharmaceutical ads, one for treating depression, the other for psoriasis. It seemed that most of the ads were devoted to all the things that could go wrong, and the list went on and on. Maybe just better to live with depression and itchy skin?

Anyway, the time passed, slowly. 9:58, 8:59, 8:46, 8:35, 8:35, 8:35.

Note

Every once in a while I talk a small step to try to keep up to the new technology, even if I am usually a decade or two behind the times. :-)

The latest is that in my new car I can very easily hook my ipod (itself probably very obsolete) up to my radio. Which makes the drive to Litchfield a lot nicer, otherwise there are places in the hills where the selection of radio stations is pretty poor.

So a couple of good interviews this morning, one with Sonia Sotomayor, interesting but just too bad she won't/can't talk about cases, the other about the passage of the civil rights bill in 1965. Ancient history to many, but brought back memories of a very turbulent time.

Next technology to adapt may be a smart phone, but the way I'm going that may still take a few years.

trail running 57:16 [3] 5.96 mi (9:37 / mi) +534ft 8:52 / mi
rhr:52 weight:137.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Started off on the trails over on the back side of Mt. Toby, did a short loop and then headed up, but wasn't up to it physically or mentally. So did a loop around on the roads before a bit more trail at the end. Perfectly nice out and decent footing, just didn't have it.

2 PM

road running 45:33 [3] 5.06 mi (9:00 / mi) +249ft 8:36 / mi
rhr:51 weight:138.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Side streets in Greenfield plus a mile or so of ice (but ice with good traction). Same as last couple of days, 15F and breezy. What do you expect, it's winter. A lot better than cold rain.

road running 46:24 [3] 4.89 mi (9:30 / mi) +279ft 9:00 / mi
weight:138.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

In Greenfield, some on the narrow trails but they were a little too icy, the rest on either wide trails (icy but fine as they were not canted) or roads. A little nippy, about 15F and breezy, but no big deal.

FA interviews with the author of a book about Pussy Riot and Russia's attitude towards gays -- listened to an interview a day or two ago about the KKK in North Carolina in the 60s, and there were certainly parallels. Very sobering. And then, for a change of pace, comedians Kay and Peele. Very amusing.

Wednesday Jan 22, 2014 #

road running 32:40 [3] 3.9 mi (8:23 / mi)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Side streets in Greenfield just before dark. Cold (15F) and windy, but certainly tolerable. Decided that it would be easier to do a few miles outside than on the treadmill, and I'm pretty sure I was right. Route.

Tuesday Jan 21, 2014 #

track 16:51 [3] 3.2 km (5:16 / km)
rhr:50 weight:139lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

At the indoor track with Phil. A couple of miles warm-up.

track 7:21 [4] 1.6 km (4:36 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And then a mile alternating slow and fast laps. Quicker ones were 49.0, 47.1, 47.4, 46.7.

track 13:30 [4] 3.2 km (4:13 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And then the crux of the workout, 4x800 on a 5-minute cycle. The hope was to do 3:30, 3:25, 3:20, and 3:15, where the assumption was the first one would be easy and the last one maybe not possible. Ended up doing 3:30.4, 3:24.7, 3:20.9, and 3:13.8, with the last one taking a bit of will-power. So a bit of progress.

track 8:47 [2] 1.6 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And then a mile slower. And as usual, nice to be done.

Note

Sports things I'd like to do at some point in the future.

Been thinking about this a little. When the thinking takes place when I'm driving, or something similar, then it's easy to have ambitions. When the thinking takes place when I'm running, such as today, the proper reaction is -- whom I am kidding?

Anyway, on the list for 2014 --

-- O'Ringen (every fifth year syndrome, 70 this year, finish in the top 10? or 5?)

-- Either qualify for Boston 2015, or do another ultra if I can find the proper event (interesting, not too easy and not too hard, right time of year, early fall).

-- World Rogaine Champs (enjoy it, do as well as we can)

-- !0-mila (enjoy it, do as well as I can and the team can)

-- World Masters, though no idea if we will go

And beyond --

-- Run Boston again, but only if fit enough to enjoy it

-- Shoot my age (probably not possible for a few years, if then, closest this year was 7)

-- Finish off the NH 4,000-footers (only a couple left, pretty trivial goal)

-- Go play at some of the classic places (such as Bandon, St. Andrews)

Note that there is no North American orienteering on the list. Not that I don't enjoy it, not that I don't try to do my best, but it just is less important these days.

And also note that someplace and at some time there is lying in wait something that will happen that will end all this athletic foolishness. I hope to put it off for a while, but it's there. In the meantime, enjoying stuff becomes more and more important.

12 PM

road running 41:15 [3] 4.5 mi (9:09 / mi) +218ft 8:45 / mi
rhr:50 weight:139lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Roads/sidewalks/trails in Greenfield. Legs feeling really heavy but the time wasn't too bad. Footing OK on the snowpacked stuff.

Sunday Jan 19, 2014 #

2 PM

road running 8:05 [3] 0.85 mi (9:31 / mi) +149ft 8:09 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

At the WCOC winter party hosted by Rick and Susie DeWitt. Some orienteering first at the Bethel schools.

A useful warm-up, not long but up the hill coming back got the heart going.

orienteering 17:56 [4] 1.86 mi (9:39 / mi) +93ft 9:12 / mi
rhr:50 weight:139lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Sprint A, with Gail navigating via cell phone. Good effort and good communications, still room for a little improvement but I'm pretty sure this is the best we've done at this once a year event. Certainly a lot of fun.

A couple of inches of snow, enough to make searching for any bare pavement a good idea.

orienteering 11:29 [3] 1.02 mi (11:15 / mi) +89ft 10:24 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

And then picking up 7 controls. A very good pace under the circumstances.

Saturday Jan 18, 2014 #

3 PM

road running 37:32 [3] 4.35 mi (8:38 / mi) +78ft 8:29 / mi
rhr:52 weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Headed out for a short run just as the snow was picking up, snowing pretty hard. But quite pleasant out, no wind.

Roads in town. Traction was fine to start, getting a little worse as I was finishing. Legs not too bad.

11 AM

road running 7:10 [0] 0.77 mi (9:19 / mi) +25ft 9:02 / mi
rhr:50 weight:140lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Phil had said the conditions at Mt. Tom off-trail were excellent, so that was enough motivation to go try our standard woods running route. Even got Gail to go along too.

A bit of warmup first.

woods running 30:03 [0] 2.48 mi (12:07 / mi) +555ft 10:00 / mi
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Once out and back to the NE, then once out and back to the SW. The proper route includes another trip to the NE, but many times in the past, the spirit wasn't willing.

Good effort, the uphills felt awful as usual, walked just a little at one point going SW after I tripped and fell and it was hard to get going again.

No snow, ice, wildlife, people (Gail was off to Little Mt. Tom). Very pleasant.

road running 6:55 [0] 0.77 mi (8:59 / mi) +43ft 8:32 / mi
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And another loop through the Lake Bray parking area afterwards.

2 PM

road running 46:34 [3] 5.45 mi (8:32 / mi) +227ft 8:13 / mi
rhr:51 weight:139.5lbs shoes: Hoka

Loop around both Sugarloafs. Felt like more work than it should have. Maybe it was the Hokas?

Wednesday Jan 15, 2014 #

11 AM

trail running 57:08 [3] 4.46 mi (12:49 / mi) +903ft 10:45 / mi
rhr:51 weight:140lbs shoes: Hoka

A route at Mt. Tom that Phil did a couple of weeks ago, more or less, over to Little Mt. Tom and back. Not all that pleasurable. Trails up high were fine, but very icy along the valley leading to Lake Bray, and muddy where it wasn't icy. So I was off trail as needed and generally rather slow.

Stayed upright on the ice, but one spill when angling down a rocky slope bushwhacking off LMT, banged a knee, hurt a good bit. Kept moving but it kept hurting more, so stopped for a couple of minutes and it mellowed out and before long didn't notice it any more. Must have hit the funny bone (or is that only on your elbow?).

The running really did suck. :-)

And tired legs, had to walk on the ups several times. And did an extra little loop on the trail just below LMT -- the trail forks, one way to the end at the little pond, the other way just loops around to where you had just been. Got to try them both out.

Note

Two encounters with orienteering in the media in recent days that I didn't expect.

The first was in a book I'm reading, The Fifth Woman by Henning Mankell (I'm reading the english translation), where the dead body tied to a tree deep in the forest is discovered by a local orienteer out doing his regular night-O' training. Makes you wonder if in addition to t-shirts that say "Night Orienteering is not a Crime" there ought to also be ones that say something like "Fight Crime, Go Night Orienteering."

The second was in quite different circumstances, and didn't exactly involve any orienteering, though it did involve a place well known to orienteers -- Harriman State Park in NY, more specifically, Silvermine, still more specifically, the hillside just across the road from the Silvermine parking lot. Which was where Adam and Hannah and Shoshanna, on their way to extract Jessa from rehab, stop to take a walk and deal with their own issues. And there are nice scenes of the wide open forest, and also the hills and the rocks, the things you either love or hate about Harriman.

Not that any of them have a clue about orienteering.

The media here is season 3, episode 2 of Girls on HBO. Spoiler alert -- Hannah is naked well less than half the time.

12 PM

track 15:55 [2] 3.0 km (5:18 / km)
rhr:52 weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus #3

At the indoor track with Phil. Nice place to be on a rainy day.

track 7:27 [3] 1.6 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

Phil's choice today. First on the agenda was a 1600, alternating slow laps and fast. Quicker laps were 49.2, 46.5, 46.0, 45.6.

track race 13:18 [4] 3.0 km (4:26 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then the main event, 3K. Sure it's just a training day, but no doubt that the goal was to run this as fast as possible.

Phil announced he was shooting for 54 seconds a lap, or 13:30 for the whole thing. I wasn't sure I could manage that, so let him set the early pace, just a little ahead of me. Can't say I ever felt good, never feeling it was easy, but the laps went by and even enough left to pick it up a bit at the end. 13:18, probably a personal worst, was still a pleasant surprise.

1:48.3, 1:48.2 1:47.5, 1:47.6, 1:47.2, 1:47.5, 1:45.4, 46.6. Kilometer splits were 4:30, 4:28, 4:20.

track 4:38 [2] 0.8 km (5:47 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

Slow.

Monday Jan 13, 2014 #

3 PM

trail running 33:54 [3] 2.77 mi (12:14 / mi) +315ft 11:03 / mi
weight:141lbs shoes: Hoka

On the south side of the Holyoke Range starting from Bachelor St. Bike trails were OK, some ice and a little mud but most could be easily avoided, whereas jeep road was all ice except for a couple of mud holes I dropped into.

Legs tired, especially starting out. Maybe because it was uphill?

Sunday Jan 12, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:13:53 [3] 8.12 mi (9:06 / mi) +808ft 8:19 / mi
rhr:51 weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Hilly roads near Winsted, CT. Definitely feeling the hills, or just tired legs, or both, but survived. And finished off another good week.

Saturday Jan 11, 2014 #

2 PM

road running 3:00 [3] 0.32 mi (9:22 / mi)

Post-game run to the car again, pouring rain, but no traffic worries. And another good game.

3 PM

road running 46:21 [3] 5.43 mi (8:32 / mi) +233ft 8:12 / mi
rhr:49 weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Same route as a couple of days ago. Late afternoon, we were stuck in a cold pocket so still mid-30s (while up in the hills it was mid-50s), rain, and dense fog.

But the run was OK, mostly on roads with not much traffic and it was going very slowly. So you run right down the middle of the road and listen for cars and then move over to the other side. Only once were cars coming from the both directions and then I just headed off into the snow. Visibility was minimal.

Listening to a FA interview with a guy who wrote a book about all his anxieties. I thought I had anxieties, but I'm nowhere close to being in his league. Maybe I just worry a bunch. But he was something else. I mean, emetophobia?

Thursday Jan 9, 2014 #

2 PM

road running 46:04 [3] 5.44 mi (8:28 / mi) +231ft 8:09 / mi
weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Loop around Sugarloafs. Used to start and finish this from home, but that would have been an extra 3 miles and I was not sure I was up for that.

Listened to a FA interview with writer Gary Shtenygart, quite interesting, emigrated from Russia to the USA as a young kid, leaving one superpower to join up with the other, or, as he put it, trading in one set of lies for another.

Wednesday Jan 8, 2014 #

11 AM

treadmill 43:01 [3] 5.0 mi (8:36 / mi)
weight:142lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Stayed inside again, 5 miles on the treadmill. 9:38, 8:46, 8:32, 8:06, 8:01. Not too exciting.

9 PM

road running 3:20 [3] 0.36 mi (9:16 / mi)

From the Mullins Center to my car, good hard effort to beat the traffic. And a good game too, went with Phil, the local team is doing well.

Tuesday Jan 7, 2014 #

11 AM

track 18:10 [2] 3.2 km (5:41 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

At the indoor track with Phil. A couple of miles warming up, discussing grooming.

track 6:40 [4] 1.6 km (4:10 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

4x400 starting every 2:30. Felt like harder work than it was supposed to be.

1:41.1, 1:37.0, 1:36.8, 1:37.6

track race 6:51 [4] 1.6 km (4:17 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then a 1600 at a good effort. I had thought about something longer, but didn't feel like suffering enough.

1:44.4, 1:44.5, 1:43.7, 1:38.2 = 5:50.8, slight improvement over 4 weeks ago, a pleasant surprise given that I am 4 weeks older.

track 8:17 [3] 1.6 km (5:11 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then another mile, moderate pace, was meant to be two at a little slower pace but that didn't happen.

Monday Jan 6, 2014 #

12 PM

road running 28:33 [2] 3.07 mi (9:19 / mi) +299ft 8:31 / mi
weight:142lbs shoes: pegasus #3

I had in mind to do some hills, but it didn't take long to realize I had no actual desire to do hills. One half-hearted attempt, and then a little loop around on the flats, at which point it started really pouring. Penance for not doing the hills?

Sunday Jan 5, 2014 #

1 PM

trail running 32:19 [3] 3.7 mi (8:44 / mi) +118ft 8:29 / mi
rhr:52 weight:141lbs shoes: Hoka

Went to Litchfield early in case the possible freezing rain actually materializes later today, and then stopped on the way home for a lap around Whiting reservoir. Pleasantly surprised to find it had been plowed. Still snow cover, but not much and generally good traction.

A good week of training. Maybe there will be progress to show for it at some point?

Saturday Jan 4, 2014 #

1 PM

road running 1:28:56 [3] 9.64 mi (9:14 / mi) +911ft 8:28 / mi
rhr:52 weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Back roads in the Conway hills. Mostly snow covered, so always slipping back just a little. Was feeling quite wasted after the first long hill, but fortunately the last 3 miles or so were down or flat, and mostly bare pavement too. Still feeling trashed at the end, so home for something to eat and then going horizontal.

Entertainment was a mixed bag. First was another attempt at This American Life, where I had felt unsatisfied after previous visits, and this visit just continued the trend. The theme was that the mother of someone who worked on the show had this list of 7 subjects that you were not supposed to talk about because they were "boring" -- I thought immediately of my mom and the various things she would never talk about, but at some point I realized her criteria were quite different, you didn't talk about certain things because they were just private. No, the key word here was "boring."

And the challenge of the show was to find a story on each of these 7 subjects that the mother would admit was actually quite interesting.

The list of things you should not talk about were:

-- dreams
-- how you slept
-- anything to do with menstruation
-- route stories (about getting from one place to someplace else)

Well, it seems I can only remember 4.... :-)

And perhaps that's because most of the stories told were in fact not very interesting. After each story the mother gave a point to TAL if the story had been interesting. The final score was 2.5 (out of a possible 7) for TAL.

I would have been much less charitable.

And then a Fresh Air interview with Elton John. How could that not be interesting? It didn't disappoint.

Friday Jan 3, 2014 #

3 PM

road running 26:24 [2] 2.83 mi (9:20 / mi) +50ft 9:11 / mi
weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus #3

In Greenfield, sidewalks and side streets, snow covered, traction not bad. A little chilly, 12F and windy, but only noticeable when going into the wind, and I got that part done first.

Thursday Jan 2, 2014 #

Note

So I've often wondered how much of this goes on among older orienteers. I don't know of any testing, ever. Hard to believe there's not some.

2 PM

road running 23:35 [2] 2.54 mi (9:17 / mi) +87ft 9:00 / mi
weight:140lbs shoes: Hoka

A short outing around town. A couple of inches of snow and rather cold (12F), though the cold was only an issue when going into the breeze. Glad I wasn't out for a long one. Traction not the best, but not real bad either, just slipping a little bit.

Wednesday Jan 1, 2014 #

10 AM

trail running 2:07:46 [3] 11.82 mi (10:49 / mi) +1898ft 9:23 / mi
weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Clint's Fat-Ass run at Crandall's -- run as many laps as you want, start whenever you want, time yourself, just be done by 2 pm. Loop was just under 3 miles. I hoped to do 4 laps and that's what I did. :-)

Also talked Phil into going, nice to have company on the drive down and back.

I guess the legs were pretty good today, though I sure was getting tired the fourth time up the hill, walked more of it than I had the previous times. But finished strong, knowing it was my last lap, plus knowing my time from a couple of years ago was 2:09. Thought I might as well see if I could get under it. (Though, in retrospect, the course was slightly shorter, maybe 30 seconds worth per lap?)

Excellent conditions, no ice or snow, a little chilly (low 20sF) but not bad. Still managed to fall twice, both pretty hard, the second almost in the one stream we crossed, but no damage done.

Lap time, time at aid station at S/F:
31:09, 0:35
31:41, 1:34
31:04, 1:01
31:16

Really nice outing. Now time for a nap. And might be a bit tired and sore tomorrow.
