Note

Today's long course.

And my route, except for the part where I'm going through tall buildings.

9 AM

orienteering (street-O) 2:48:35 intensity: (1:38 @1) + (14:25 @2) + (2:29:30 @3) + (2:58 @4) + (4 @5) 16.41 mi (10:16 / mi) +1145ft 9:38 / mi
ahr:141 max:162 shoes: mizuno

A very fine adventure.

Did the long course at Alex and Ed's Boston Urban Adventure Run. The legs were getting a little tired towards the end, but it sure was fun. And of the 4 or 5 of us on the long course, I came in first. :-)

I guess three or four miles a day of training is plenty. Might have to cut back.

Best adventure was finding the Hong Kong Eatery (and once you found it, you had to write down what kind of animals were hanging in the window). Got to the center of the circle, on the outskirts of Chinatown, a strip mall with about 20 establishments listed on the sign. The was a Chinese Eatery, but no HK Eatery. Hmmm.

Asked an old Chinese guy -- Hong Kong Eatery? He pointed to the nearby Chinese Eatery. No, I said, Hong Kong Eatery, with lots of emphasis on Hong Kong. Ah, he thought for a moment and pointed up the street. On the left, he said, 5 minute walk.

Didn't know whether to believe that or not, so I accosted a couple of older Chinese women. Same question (i.e. bad grammar, just the three words, Hong Kong Eatery, big emphasis on the first two words). They pointed up the same street the guy had.

Ran a couple of blocks. Lots of Chinese places but no HKE. Third conversation, middle-aged guy. By now I was feeling like those folks in "Amazing Race." Past the light he said, on the left. I couldn't see a light, but off I went. Three more blocks. In case you are keeping track, I am now way, way outside the circle. But having a fine time.

Past the light. Lots of people, lots of shops, ask another guy, he points straight ahead, and there in another 50 yards is the HKE.

And in the window, not what I would call "animals," rather a bunch of cooked fowl. Not knowing how picky Alex will be (if I report chickens, and it's really ducks, will I be DQ'd?), I strike up my 5th "conversation" in the last couple of minutes -- What are those, I ask two Chinese women out shopping.

Once again I hit the jackpot in who I ask -- those on the left are chicken with sesame, that group there are ducks, and they're starting to tell me how the ducks are prepared, but I've already thanked them and am on my way, writing down "chicken and ducks" on my answer sheet.

And trying not to get lost on the way to the next control because my starting point is so far off from where I expected. And a big smile on my face.

hike 26:53 [1] 1.7 mi (15:49 / mi) +476ft 12:30 / mi

Walk up South Sugarloaf and back. Beautiful late afternoon.

ahr:138 max:152 shoes: mizuno

Another nice day, another modest effort. Still some soft ice on the trails, but should be gone by next week.

A day off tomorrow and then the Tour de Boston (and surroundings I assume) on Sunday.

Thursday Mar 28, 2013 #

road running 53:40 intensity: (45 @1) + (2:54 @2) + (48:23 @3) + (1:38 @4) 6.16 mi (8:43 / mi) +525ft 8:04 / mi
ahr:140 max:156 shoes: mizuno

Nice run with Dave around Greenfield, including on the bike path down by the river, never been there. Six miles, so 16 or so on Sunday ought to be easy. :-)

Wednesday Mar 27, 2013 #

1 PM

road running 40:42 intensity: (48 @1) + (5:02 @2) + (34:52 @3) 4.49 mi (9:04 / mi) +558ft 8:07 / mi
ahr:137 max:153 shoes: mizuno

About a mile and a half was on snow/ice, unpleasant enough to keep me from venturing further onto the trails. But legs seemed to hold up.

With any luck, a significant part of DOMA will struck down in June. Better late than never.

road running 25:09 intensity: (58 @1) + (2:45 @2) + (21:26 @3) 2.95 mi (8:32 / mi) +75ft 8:20 / mi
ahr:137 max:148 shoes: mizuno

A short run, but OK, the legs are hanging in there. Seems like I should be good to go 16 miles on Saturday in Boston. Guess I'd better send my entry in.

Hmm, actually I can do it here.

Monday Mar 25, 2013 #

road running 38:26 intensity: (48 @1) + (1:13 @2) + (34:34 @3) + (1:51 @4) 4.47 mi (8:36 / mi) +325ft 8:03 / mi
ahr:144 max:158 shoes: mizuno

Roads in Greenfield with Rick Scott. Nice to have company. Hamstrings had been a little achy after yesterday, but seemed OK today. Helped that the pace was always reasonable.

Sunday Mar 24, 2013 #

11 AM

road running 47:31 intensity: (26 @1) + (5:28 @2) + (41:37 @3) 5.44 mi (8:44 / mi) +620ft 7:53 / mi
ahr:141 max:154 weight:141lbs shoes: mizuno

A little bit longer on a nice day, 45F, shorts. A little achy at the end, should have kep the pace a little slower. Got the ice out afterwards.

Set my entry for the 50-miler. Who knows. The challenge will be in making it to the start line.

Note

A client walks into the office yesterday. I ask where his wife is as they usually come in together.

"I don't know."

"You mean she's coming seperately?"

"I don't know where she is."

"Well, we can go ahead and get started.

"You don't understand. I really don't know where she is. I haven't seen her since last May."

In this business you get to deal with all sorts of relationships. :-)

And a second note --

This and this and this are what you get with "professional" event management?

ahr:135 max:154 shoes: mizuno

Four miles on the treadmill. For entertainment I turned to a show I had listened to once and decided it was too much for me.

This time I made it all the way through. Let's see, there was the opening rant about bad advice given by another advice person about how guys with really small dicks should persue handicapped women. Made it through that.

Then a couple of actually very interesting segments about intergenerational relationship problems brought about by the fact that someone was gay. Really good.

And then at some point inviting in another sex blogger to talk about the problems a 19-year-old guy was having with getting satisfactory anal sex. Well, I guess everyone is entitled to their own set of problems.

Show ended about halfway through my core stuff, and I didn't feel inclined to load up another. This one will last me for a while.

Here's my latest thought for a reasonable 50-miler. Seems like I dilly-dallied too long and the Bighorn 50 filled up. So maybe I should just sign up for this one and assume I can run 47 more miles in June than I am running now.

ahr:137 max:150 shoes: mizuno

Out on the local streets, seemed to manage with no new ailments, so good to go again tomorrow.

It's good to be doing core exercises, but it takes time. Trying to keep doing one session in my early afternoon break (and another before bed), but it gets tight. Lucky I'm not managing to run more than a little bit.

Looked on the schedule and Alex's Boston event is coming up next weekend. Thought it was going to be a score O' but seems like it will be point to point. I'd like to go, but only if the legs are cooperating.

treadmill 29:48 intensity: (4:25 @1) + (16:18 @2) + (9:05 @3) 3.0 mi (9:56 / mi)

Three miles on the treadmill (flat), managed to survive, so that is good. And then usual shoulder stuff, plus lowly adding in other core work. Trying to figure out a routine for that.

Four more weeks to go.

And back to work Monday morning.

Meanwhile mom is still hanging in there.

Walking a mile at 10% (15:03), then jogging a mile flat (9:37). Not too bad.

11 AM

run/hike 33:02 intensity: (1:03 @1) + (11:43 @2) + (17:20 @3) + (2:56 @4) 2.2 mi (15:00 / mi) +1001ft 10:29 / mi
ahr:134 max:158 weight:141lbs shoes: mizuno

Twice up the steep trail on the south end of South Sugarloaf, and gently jog down the road. A little slippery in places on the trail, a little ice in places on the road, but no problem. Legs sure felt feeble going up. But I think survived the bit of running going down.

4 PM

driving 1 [0] +5062ft

Weekly commute, outbound. A little research shows this is the 135th time over the past 28 months.

And I'm quite sure a PR. No delays, traffic was really moving on 91, I was just going with the flow, no slow cars through the hills, dry pavement, daylight. Or maybe because the GPS was beeping every mile?

treadmill 30:01 intensity: (1:16 @1) + (5:18 @2) + (23:27 @3) 1.79 mi (16:46 / mi) +1401ft 9:38 / mi
ahr:137 max:153 shoes: mizuno

15%, seeing how much I could climb in 30 minutes.

Friday Mar 15, 2013 #

treadmill 44:54 intensity: (2:20 @1) + (11:04 @2) + (31:30 @3) 2.54 mi (17:41 / mi) +1988ft 10:09 / mi
ahr:132 max:150 shoes: mizuno

Walking on the treadmill, set it at 15% and went until I'd climbed 2,000'. Enough to work up a good sweat.

And shoulder stuff -- do range of motion stuff twice a day, weights maybe 2 out of every 3 days. Slowly add in a bit of other core stuff.

Started with a This American Life show about coincidences. Not very good, so switched to a couple of Moth stories. Much better.

Thursday Mar 14, 2013 #

treadmill 25:13 [3] 1.27 mi (19:51 / mi) +994ft 11:24 / mi
shoes: mizuno

Back to a walking routine. Gets frustrating. 15%. at 3 mph, not pushing it.

On the other hand, been looking forward to this day for a while. Appointment with my PT young (and charming) woman to see what progress I'd made since she evaluated my shoulders 6 or 7 weeks ago and gave me exercises to do. I've been extraordinarily diligent -- wish I could apply that to other things in life -- and knew I had made a bunch of progress both in strength and range of motion. But I wanted the confirmation.

So she checked me out, testing strength and range in a bunch of different ways and I was just loving it, because every single one was a big improvement, and I was getting all this positive feedback from her. And she was also delighted that one of her patients had really done what she prescribed.

I mentioned that I'd also been doing pushups and a couple of other things -- I want to get back so I can do at least one pull-up (a couple of chin-ups are possible but not yet a pull-up) -- so she wanted to check my form. Two months ago I hadn't been able to do one properly. Now I did a quick 20 and she was, no point in being modest, in awe.... :-)

And, seriously, saying she would have a smile on her face for the rest of the day because one of her clients had actually followed her instructions and done so well.

Of course, now I have to keep doing the exercises. And see what happens when I get out in the woods and start falling again.

And it sure would be nice if my legs would start behaving themselves again.

Note

Add to the list of the things I never knew -- the Thursday before Easter is the day Catholics belonging to one local church can take their kielbasa (a Polish sausage) to chuch and the priest will bless it for them.

I wanted to say WTF, but since this was a client telling me this I just said something like, No kidding, didn't know that.

But still, WTF?

treadmill 15:00 [3] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +525ft 10:01 / mi

Just walking today and not very long, a mile at 10%. And then shoulder stuff.

road running 47:22 intensity: (55 @1) + (2:56 @2) + (43:31 @3) 5.42 mi (8:44 / mi) +486ft 8:03 / mi
ahr:140 max:153 shoes: pegasus #2

Headed out on a loop north of town that I used to do when it was a short run. Now it is a long run. The legs felt OK, except another little leg pain, way on the side of my calf, for the last mile or two. Not enough to have to start walking, Doesn't feel terrible now, will see in the morning. Main thing to remember is to change shoes next time I go out.

I was listening to a reporter who covers the Vatican talk about pope matters, one out, another soon to be in. I don't care much for religions. They do some good things, provide people with both a sense of community and a way of coping with mortality, but they also do a whole lot of bad stuff, with the Catholic Church certainly doing it's share.

The reporter was quite sympathetic to the outgoing guy and quite sympathetic to the Vatican itself (is he being paid off?), which seems to have had a number of scandels recently. In each case the reporter seemed very protective, discounting rumors of bad behavior. My guess is that things are probably a lot worse.

And he said that there was no reason to expect the new pope not to be conservatine, since most of the cardinals are.

And that got me thinking about who they might elect, and my first thought was that it would be nice if there was a bit of outside-the-box thinking, not that there is a chance of that.

So first of all, why should the pope have to come from the cardinals, about as dreary a set of candidates as there could be. Think of the other possibilies. I mean just looking in the USA for candidates, you could go with a guy with the executive experience to really run the church and the confidence to do it, Donald Trump.

OK, stop laughing. He probably wouldn't take it anything. But he does seem to have enough nutty ideas that he might fit right in.

Serious candidate -- Mike Bloomburg. His term as mayor of New York is about up and he'll be looking for something to do. He wouldn't have any problem with the whole infallible thing. If he could run New York, he could certainly run the Vatican. I'm guessing there haven't been any Jewish popes before, but why not?

And a really good candidate -- Michelle Obama. Put her in as pope and pretty soon a priest could marry, or be women, or both. The church would flourish around the world. And its policies would start making sense. OK, I guess that's the stumbling block.

So who else is there? Among orienters the only person I can think of with right international savoir-faire is Boris. But I'm not sure he could handle a full-time job.

Just a short outing before settling in at the office for the day, but better than I expected. Very nice out, upper 40s, sunny, light breeze, spring is coming.

Heading off to see Quartet this evening.

treadmill 36:53 intensity: (1:09 @1) + (10:27 @2) + (19:26 @3) + (4:37 @4) + (1:14 @5) 4.25 mi (8:41 / mi)
ahr:138 max:163 weight:141.5lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Tried running faster for the first time in a while, gradually increasing the pace, max was 8.2 mph. Didn't feel awful.

Meanwhile it seems we got an inch of snow while places 40 miles away to the east were getting 2 feet. Glad it wash't the reverse.

ahr:122 max:132 shoes: pegasus #2

Just a couple slow miles on the treadmill plus the usual shoulder work.

Been smelling paint fumes all day as they are renovating and expanding. My office won't be done until after April, but I have been very aware of what's being done just outside my door -- moving stuff all Friday, new subflooring Monday, new carpet Tuesday, painting today and tomorrow. Should be finished sometime next week. The noise was pretty bad on Monday but I'd take that any day over the fumes.

treadmill 36:08 intensity: (2:43 @1) + (8:59 @2) + (24:26 @3)

Raining lightly out, and since I'm not a ski orienteer it was way too bad to go train outside. Felt really tired; had been thinking of setting the treadmill at a decent slope, but flat was more than enough. Need more sleep.

ahr:137 max:146 shoes: pegasus #2

Short outing outside, very nice out, wearing shorts. Legs a little tired from yesterday so just as good this was all I had time for. Another very hectic day.

Monday Mar 4, 2013 #

ahr:143 max:156 shoes: pegasus #2

Running outside for the first time in a while, maybe a third of it on snow-pack. Legs felt OK, but the next morning maybe a little sore. Still dealing with a mild cold I've had for 3 or 4 weeks, would be nice to say good-bye to it.

Note

Day off today.

Went to see Amore last night. Wonderful film (about an elderly couple, she has a stroke, he struggles to take care of her as she declines) even if a bit slow at times. Gail asked afterwards if I had thought about my mom at all during it. The whole time, I said. Every single moment.

A different journey in the film than for my mom, but along a similar path and obviously with the same destination. If anything the film left unsaid just how difficult it is for the caregivers, if nothing else just the daily need to attend to bathing and toileting. They say we revert to childhood towards the end, especially if the mind goes. I can't speak from experience, never having had kids, but I have to believe that bathing and toileting is a lot easier with a 1-year-old than with a fully grown 90+-year old. I only had to deal with it for about 48 hours a couple of years ago before I could line up full-time care, but that was enough to get a sense for how hard it is.

And what I do now, my weekly trip, I have it really easy.

Latest report, she now really doesn't know who I am. Just the way it is.

Otherwise, good progress today. Got all the stuff together for my mom's taxes (not a trivial endeavor). And finally wrote up stuff for a web page for the Billygoat (I imagine it will be a week or two before it goes public, as Jim Paschetto has to do his magic). And now time to beat the drum a bit for the ski-O team in Kaz.
