biking 42:40 intensity: (13:07 @1) + (21:00 @2) + (7:11 @3) + (1:22 @4) 9.71 mi (4:24 / mi) +633ft 4:08 / mi
ahr:119 max:161

Quads really sore from running down Mt. Snow yesterday, so went out for a very easy ride. Of course I had to add in a trip up South Sugarloaf just to make sure I worked up a sweat. 8:41 up, 2:41 down, both quicker than I can run, especially the down. Actually pleasantly surprised by the up time.

83-64-0-52 very early.

run/hike 38:47 intensity: (47 @1) + (12:12 @2) + (25:48 @3) 2.1 mi (18:28 / mi) +1617ft 10:41 / mi
ahr:132 max:145 shoes: pegasus #2

Up Mt. Snow after a round at the golf course there. Mostly walking, didn't feel too zippy. Gorgeous day and views.

88-63-1-52, white tees, played pretty well but putted atrociously. Some days are like that. But good company with three OFs, especially the female one.

trail running 24:06 intensity: (16 @1) + (15:42 @2) + (8:08 @3) 2.6 mi (9:16 / mi)
ahr:126 max:143 shoes: pegasus #2

And then down, first rather steeply, then following the "easiest" downhill bike trail. Actually would have been quite easy, no technical stuff. Had the place to myself, not a biker to be seen.

orienteering 17:49 intensity: (14 @1) + (2:52 @2) + (14:41 @3) + (2 @4) 1.26 mi (14:08 / mi) +3ft 14:06 / mi
ahr:137 max:155 shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Running the classic for this afternoon's WRE at Mike's Maze. Decent run. Decided at one point that I thought the map was wrong at a control, so I moved it to an adjacent dead end, so maybe an extra 30 seconds there. Would be a little easier with streamers, though basically, you either know where you are or you don't and I didn't have any trouble knowing I was in the right places because the map is so good.

orienteering 6:18 intensity: (2:38 @2) + (3:40 @3) 0.44 mi (14:19 / mi) +3ft 14:13 / mi
ahr:133 max:150

And running the short classic. Screwed this up, both the timing and the navigating. Forgot to start my watch, didn't discover it until #2, so my time is from then on. And then just really wasn't focused the whole time, several bobbles. Should have taken a little longer break after the first run than the couple of minutes I did.

9 AM

orienteering 40:00 [0]

And then hanging streamers for 23 points. Turned out the map was just fine where I thought something was wrong, but used the different point anyway.

Beautiful morning for CMO.

ahr:131 max:151

Northfield, Warwick, Wendell. Two good climbs. Breeze out of the south. Got around OK, not dying at the end, but no desire to do a second loop.

Plus 76-61-2-51 early morning walk.

Note

I think I have lots of dreams. I also think it's probably a good thing that I forget all of them when I wake up. Well, almost all, I do remember the occasional anxiety dream, using involving snakes or low-flying planes (though not both at once) or organizing an O' event when it becomes clear that things will never be ready in time. Basic anxiety stuff.

So I am perplexed as to why I remember this snippet --

I am someplace inside with a bunch of O' people. Alex is at the top of the stairs, which seem to have turned into a steep ramp, and she slips and slides down at a high rate of speed. She appears to be totally totally broken. She will never do anything athletic again. Ali appears, and starts jumping on Alex's back, rather violently, clearly making things even worse if that is possible. Except Alex is now all better. And I'm wondering (and amazed), how did Ali know to do that? Fade out....

Yikes, I wonder what else is going on between my ears.

Lower Road - Upper Road in Deerfield. On the warm side so worked up a good sweat even if I wasn't pushing it.

Note

Maps from last weekend in Peekskill --

First, maps without my routes if you wish:

1. Bushy Ridge.
2. Blue Mt (no trails or walls).
3. Blue Mt, just contours, and nothing just before controls.

No controls. In most cases also no streamers. So you were your own judge as to whether you were right or not.

Then, with my routes (click on maps for larger image):

1. Bushy Ridge

Even more trashy then I remember from a long time ago, with laurel, ferns, and the blueberry-type stuff all flourishing. Walking most of the time from 1 to 4. Then went to 10 (also walking), as didn't want to be out too long, even though I knew the forest was better around 5-9. Ran mostly from 10-16.

#2 -- not in touch early on, but OK after big white reentrant with large boulder.
#3 -- miserable thick stuff all the way. Got off at the end but figured it out.

The rest were mostly good, except missed the little trail around the pond right at the end. Pretty sure I was at the right spot at all of them.

2. Blue Mt, no trails or walls.

Easier than I expected. The hills are well-defined, and the cliffs give them character, so no problems. And very good fun. Except for the climb to 9. :-)

3. Blue Mt, just contours.

I was wondering whether to go out or not, but this got me curious as to how I would manage.

Think I managed pretty well, but it was not easy. Most of them I was 99% sure I was at the right place. On #1 I wasn't sure, but I think I was. Also a little doubt at 3 and 6, though probably right. Definitely wrong on 11.

And 12, lost contact before long. Just kept heading NW, hoping things would make sense, but not really. Getting quite distressed, went up one hill thinking it might be the right one, but no rock formations. But it looked like the hill(s) just south of 12, and in fact it was. Lucky.

Tough. Strangest part was halfway from 5 to 6, very weird contours just to the right of the line., turns out (as I was expecting) that on the regular O' map they are hidden by cliffs, and the drafter just never completed them.

Interesting experience, glad I did it.

Note

Routes from the maze this morning. Classic and sprint were good, but the relay was worse than I thought. In all cases, click on map for larger image.

Comments (classic) --
#3 -- Used the E/W open area to get across to the east side, quicker than the little wiggly trails.
#5 -- Going by 11 made it simpler (and faster?).
#8 -- South route might be quicker?
#9 -- Down by 11 again, then towards 3, then west. A good route, i think?
#12 -- One where having been in the maze helped, I knew it was only approachable from the SW.
F -- Out of 12 the exact same way, made it easier.

Put my splits up for all of these.

Comments (sprint) --

#2 -- went north, south is probably about the same.
#4 -- tough leg, went south. I think the navigation is easier that way though north might be shorter.
#5 -- North of the first bird, south of the second. Who knows?

Comments (relay) --

#1 -- Not focused, turned right after first bird instead of second.
#2-7 -- Good, I think.
#8 -- Worse than I remember leaving 8, don't know what I was thinking. At least when I hit a dead end going NE, it was clear what I'd done. And then obviously skipped #8....

I am amazed how well Ian did. He seems to have a knack for this kind of data processing.

8 AM

trail running 5:26 intensity: (46 @1) + (3:46 @2) + (54 @3) 0.54 mi (10:04 / mi)
ahr:121 max:132 shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Since all the controls in the maze were still there, I figured why not run the courses. Naturally I had the advantage of having set the courses, and walked in the maze a bunch, and run in it a couple of times....

A warm-up loop around the maze.

orienteering 12:37 intensity: (10 @1) + (38 @2) + (11:31 @3) + (18 @4) 1.06 mi (11:54 / mi) +3ft 11:52 / mi
ahr:143 max:158 shoes: Brooks something-or-others

First the classic. I think I had a pretty clean run, though it's hard to remember. And I have to say it was really fun.

orienteering 3:21 intensity: (2 @1) + (27 @2) + (2:44 @3) + (8 @4) 0.28 mi (11:57 / mi) +3ft 11:49 / mi
ahr:142 max:158 shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Downloaded, then next was the sprint without a further break. I think it was also pretty clean. And also a lot of fun.

orienteering 7:11 intensity: (28 @1) + (49 @2) + (2:45 @3) + (1:47 @4) + (1:22 @5) 0.64 mi (11:13 / mi)
ahr:153 max:191 shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And finally the relay, though after a longer break because Mike happened by and we had a good chat. I think he really enjoyed being a spectator, said a few pictures of us might appear on the maze website. Also talked about maybe trying it on a weekend a year from now.

And then the relay. Whoops, three problems, two small, one big. A wrong turn on the way to #1, dead end. A wrong turn leaving #7, another dead one. But the big problem was forgetting there was a #8 (and a couple of others did last night, before being directed over). But I just went straight to the finish, never thought about #8. Oh, well.

Once again, really fun. And of course I can only wonder how I would have managed as a regular participant....

orienteering 1:10:00 [1]

Alex asked me at some point, maybe last night, if I was stressed out as much as before the 5-Day, and I said I didn't think so. I guess the proof is in how I spent the day -- first an early round of golf, then getting the maps printed and doing some errands, then just enough time for a bike ride, and then off to the maze to hang controls. Obviously I had too much time on my hands.

The last item took longer than expected. I'd figured on 45 minutes to an hour, but it took an hour and ten minutes, mainly because I'd forgotten how much time it took to assemble the posts and flags and e-boxes. So didn't get done until 5:35, but first start was not until 6 pm, so everything cool.

Operations during the meet went pretty smoothly, though not made any easier by people forgetting their e-punches, or trading them seemingly willy-nilly. Thanks to George for his help in keeping everything straight.

Also a nice visit from Will and Mike. And thanks to many generous donations, I'll be able to stop by tomorrow and pass on $200. That, plus the smiles they had watching us, should make us very welcome in the future.

Quite an awesome evening, glad so many people could come. Maybe sometime we'll try it on a weekend, though that would require getting organized a little further in advance.

ahr:131 max:153

Wendell - Shutesbury loop. Up in the hills a bit on a beautiful day (80F, dew point 51, NW breeze), gradually going a little farther. Legs felt not great, not bad. Two good climbs (by my standards), one (220m) about 19 minutes, the second (130m) about 12.

orienteering 46:32 [0] 1.22 mi (38:09 / mi) +7ft 37:57 / mi

Note

Very nice weekend in Peekskill staying at Neil's. Included was the opportunity to meet Giacomo's girlfriend from Trieste, name of Camilla). Plus Segi (sp?) from Israel, in NYC for a post-doc at Rockefeller University, he'll be showing up at meets.

At some point the discussion was about how Giacomo needs to resume logging on AP, and while he was at it, make his posts more interesting. He seemed a bit perplexed. What was wrong with "3x1000m, then 2x400" for a post?

Better than nothing, for sure. But it is easy to expand a bit. So I suggested a possibility for the same workout that wouldn't require too much extra work -- "3x1000m, then 2x400m, thinking of Camilla the whole time, felt really strong."

Isn't that at least a step in the right direction? Or is it hopeless and he really needs a ghost logger, like Sam does for Ross?

11 AM

orienteering 1:12:19 intensity: (18 @1) + (20:11 @2) + (51:50 @3) 3.46 mi (20:54 / mi) +732ft 17:25 / mi
ahr:133 max:149 shoes: pegasus #2

Neil's (or Jagge's) course at Blue Mountain (with Neil's route). No rock on the map, no trails, no stone walls, no dot knolls, no form lines, no blue, no green, plus nothing at all in the 100 meters before the control. And no controls or streamers.

Good fun. A couple of moments of doubt, plus seriously lost map contact on the way to 12, but recovered well and pretty sure I got them all. Neil said it should take me about 1:10, so I came pretty close. I think he did it in the spring in 50.

But I sure am getting fragile. With the dead branches and the rocks, have to be very careful, especially going downhill. Still fell a few times, but no damage.

I post routes tomorrow.

orienteering 1:11:30 intensity: (37 @1) + (31:37 @2) + (38:03 @3) + (33 @4) + (40 @5) 3.22 mi (22:12 / mi) +466ft 19:32 / mi
ahr:131 max:150 shoes: pegasus #2

Morning training at Bushy Ridge. Haven't been there for many many years and might never go there again... :-)

At some point early on I was thinking -- hmmm, as bad as the D2R2 can be, it can't be as bad as this.

Lots of mountain laurel, lots of blueberry crap. Though the last third was a lot better, verging on fun.

4 PM

orienteering 50:52 intensity: (37 @1) + (2:38 @2) + (45:16 @3) + (2:13 @4) + (8 @5) 3.16 mi (16:06 / mi) +597ft 13:39 / mi
ahr:140 max:164 shoes: pegasus #2

Afternoon training at Blue Mountain, starting and finishing at Neil's. Much more fun. Used the map with no walls and no trails, seemed not to make the orienteering any harder.

As cool a day as we've had for a while, so I wasn't totally fried.

ahr:127 max:150 weight:138lbs

Back roads in South Deerfield, decent effort.

None of this is making me any fitter for O, but it's a nice change of pace from running, and certainly easier to do this time of year.

ahr:134 max:159

Whately - South Deerfield. Dewpoint more reasonable (60?) so a little more zip in the legs, plus a short ride.

On two more days to feel really glad I'm not doing this year's D2R2. :-)

ahr:125 max:162 shoes: pegasus #2

Trying out another classic course.

It sure isn't easy. Two mistakes of substance. If you got good at doing this at speed, city sprints would be simple.

Heavy rain last night, so it was quite muddy.

orienteering (corn maze) 4:56 intensity: (35 @1) + (3:48 @2) + (33 @3) 0.28 mi (17:36 / mi) +7ft 17:13 / mi
ahr:121 max:136 shoes: pegasus #2

And then trying out a sprint course. Could be a keeper, maybe just a little adjusting.

And then stopped by to see the creator, he lives across the street, to pass on a couple of map corrections, though the map really is just about perfect.

Again, very tough, things just come at you so fast.... :-)

ahr:136 max:155 weight:138lbs

Old Deerfield - River Road. A little harder effort than recent, shooting for max 150 HR.

At some point will have to venture out on a long ride -- tour of Hampshire County is in the back of my mind, not something idiotic like D2R2, at least idiotic for an OF like me -- but that will have to wait until a cool day comes along.

5 PM

orienteering (corn maze) 15:21 intensity: (23 @1) + (9:14 @2) + (5:44 @3) 1.03 mi (14:54 / mi) +3ft 14:51 / mi
ahr:127 max:140 shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And to complete the day's triathlon training (84-53-1-46 earlier), a test course in the maze just to see what it was like, though it seems I forgot to start my watch until #3.

Very cool. And takes a lot of skill to do it well (both with respect to reading the map without stopping, and executing correctly). Left a fair bit to be desired with regard to both.

Bike ride in Old Saybrook at Marie's farewell party. With George, plus Joe and Judy/Jeff most of the way, plus Charlie and Rhonda much of the way. Took a different route at the end than the others, i.e. a couple of wrong turns. Feeling beat by the end, actually never feeling very spry, but a very nice ride, good company.

run/hike 53:17 [2] 4.0 mi (13:19 / mi)
shoes: pegasus #2

Run/hike up the Summit Trail at Mt. Sunapee. Pretty good effort, ran something between a quarter and half the way. Lots of rocks and roots but not too steep. The trail map says 2.0 miles, the sign says 2.1, my guess from G-maps is 2.4, more switchbacks. And then down via the ski trails, maybe 1.6 miles, reasonably good footing, most of the way had been mowed and grass was less than a foot high. 37:25 up, 15:52 down, about 1,400' vertical. (Or, as some people do when they have a need to make a molehill into a mountain, 2,800' of vertical change!)

Definitely not as hot as it's been, but still sweating a ton.

And really deficient when it came to gear. Left my Garmin at home, plus my blue hat supplies. At least the FDFs were minimal, the score was 1-0 in my favor. But would have liked to see the 305's data.

And then joined Peter and John Goodwin and our host for a round at the nearby very private Baker Hill. Not my best by far, also not my worst by far, excellent company, and the match ended up exactly even, just as it did two years ago. Very fitting.

Note

I haven't been watching much of the Olympics so far. I think part of the reason is that swimming has been covered on NBC to the exclusion of lots of other things, and I find swimming to be uninteresting. So I have mostly tuned out.

But I happened to tune in this afternoon, and the men's 10K was coming up. Thought I'd watch. And I was surprised that NBC's focus was primarily on Mo Farah, a Brit (though he trains in the USA), and only slightly on Galen Rupp. They usually go all out to root for the home team (as the media does in most countries).

Regardless, it was a wonderful race to watch, a wonderful finish, and a wonderful scene afterwards. I can only imagine what the home crowd felt like, with gold medals also in the heptathlon and men's long jump. I imagine it will be an evening they will remember for a long long time.

And I was very glad to have tuned in.

Back roads in Montague and Millers Falls, relaxed pace again, this time keeping the HR rate under 140, except for a couple spots coming back into the wind. Dewpoint 74, good day not to be trying to go harder. No water, as usual unless I'm going for a couple hours or more. :-)

Another very short jog. Hilly and very hot. Only thing making it possible was it was the first time I'd been on these trails.

89-46-0-41. Hot, hilly, and a lot of bad shots. But had some enjoyable company.

Also spent a few hours helping out at my local club putting on their big annual tournament. Should do stuff like that more often as it's a good way to feel more connected. Just like in O'.

10 PM

run/hike 19:40 intensity: (37 @1) + (12:20 @2) + (6:43 @3) 1.67 mi (11:46 / mi) +472ft 9:17 / mi

Full moon out, so seemed like a good time for an excursion up South Sugarloaf. And also like time to try a little running. Alternated slow running and walking on the way up, then jogged down. Seemed OK, no pain, also the legs are clearly not used to this running stuff. 12:00 up, 7:40 down.

Still 80F and dew point of 70 at 11 pm.

Relaxed ride around Old Deerfield - River Road loop, just trying to keep my heart rate under 130 as a way to make sure I took it easy. Very enjoyable!

Just as I was turning into our driveway at the end another biker went by, recognized me, and stopped to say hello. A voice from the past, Ken Garber, maybe one or two folks here will remember him. He worked at Northfield Mountain when we started orienteering there in 1981, and was just the friendliest and most helpful person you could ever to have to deal with.

They have quite a power operation there -- a pump storage facility with the reservoir up on top of the mountain, plus a large building used as a center for the recreational activities. Back then it was owned by Northeast Utilities. The guy in charge had heard about O' and wanted a map made of their land, so Eric Weyman and Pat Dunlavey spent several months there in 1980 doing the work.

The first A meet was in November 1981. In addition to the regular orienteering there was a night O Saturday evening. Ken kept the visitors center open so we could use it, and then at some point when things were winding down, and he was more than ready to head home, he just handed me the key and told me to lock up when we were done. Amazing.

We had two (or three?) Billygoats there, plus in 1992 the first relay champs that used the point system that we still use. For that weekend, late May, they turned over one of the fields to us for camping, a very mellow evening.

It's been a while since there was a meet there. It's now owned by a different power company and I'm sure there are security issues. But it might be worth investigating to see if it could be used again.

On the flats south of town. Breeze out of the south so a lot easier coming back. And certainly a lot easier than yesterday.

Took a short detour to investigate the corn maze.

Plus early morning walk, best round of the year, 76-45-2-41.
