trail running 57:16 5.34 mi (10:44 / mi) +1043ft 9:03 / mi
ahr:145 max:161 shoes: saloman

Getting right to the most important stuff, the highlight -- though I suppose it more accurately was the lowlight -- of today's run was that I spiked myself. Right on the ankle bone. Felt it when I did it, but it didn't hurt much or for long, so I forgot about it, then was quite surprised when I took my sock off and blood was dripping.

Yet another toy, the microspikes in this case, that it seems like I am not safe with. I really though the spikes pointed down, but maybe I didn't have them on right.

Otherwise, beautiful run, but in all honesty a lot of just plain hard work. Snowmobile trails from Rt. 2 in Gill, parking at the French King bridge. Pretty good conditions, not perfect (that would be a little firm, just short of icy) but real nice. And as is common around here in daytime during the week, not a snowmobile to be seen, or heard, or smelled.

Though there were a lot of hills.

Event: Bye-bye-O

orienteering 22:30 1.47 mi (15:18 / mi) +92ft 14:27 / mi
ahr:139 max:154 rhr:48 weight:135.5lbs shoes: saloman

Two "sprints" at Stratton Brook, courtesy of Peter Grollman, as a farewell present before he moves back to Switzerland. Very nice afternoon. Runnability varied from pretty good on the few trails that were well packed out, to so-so on the other trails, to just awful elsewhere.

First one, "US" sprint, first one out, off-trail was terrible, but fortunately the off-trail sections were not too long. Worked up a good sweat.

Was wearing the microspikes, definitely helped.

orienteering 24:29 1.7 mi (14:24 / mi) +138ft 13:22 / mi
ahr:145 max:159 shoes: saloman

Second one, the "CH" sprint. A little longer, a good bit of somewhat packed out trail, but the off-trail sections had seen a little traffic by now so they were better. Ran more, worked harder overall.

And then afterwards, to a nearby cafe in Simsbury with most everyone for some food and drink and good conversation, all organized by Peter and Claudia. Such a nice way to finish off the day, and to say good-bye (for now) and thanks for all their contributions to WCOC over the last few years. They will be missed.

Note

Time for the weekly Lost and Found report.

Starting weight: 144 (mid-December)
Jan. 1: 142
Jan. 8: 139
Jan. 15: 137
Jan. 22: 136
Today: 136.5

Mood: Mood is just fine. Ate a little more than I planned to this week -- there is a large variety tin of chocolate cookies at work and it seems impossible to avoid the occasional visit. But I've been consistent with the exercise, and still no eating after dinner. 135 a month from now would be nice, on the way to 133 this spring. But it will take some saying No.

And, I think it's time to start a little thinking about an O' schedule for 2011. That can give some extra incentive. If I'm going to go to the JK, I need to start making plans.

8 AM

road running 10:31 1.06 mi (9:55 / mi) +7ft 9:52 / mi

A little warm-up.

Ended up running the race with clown pants, one short-sleeve and one long-sleeve shirt, gloves, no hat.

9 AM

road running race 48:28 6.36 mi (7:37 / mi) +131ft 7:28 / mi vdot: 42.7

10K at Forest Park in Springfield. Beautiful day for late January, low 30s and minimal wind, but the running was challenging -- maybe half on bare or mostly bare pavement, most of the rest on snowpack with the traction was pretty loose, and a few hundred yards on very choppy snow. So hard to know what to make of my time, but I think it was genrally OK. Especially as the legs didn't feel particularly spry.

Saw Goerge and Lyn there, not sure what they ran, also Clint, 43+, quite excellent, though I must add that he had these nice-looking spikes on. Don't know if that made much of a difference. If they gave an award for missing your predicted time by the most (they give one for coming closest), then Cling sure would have won it, as he predicted 49. He appears not to know his own strength.

A bunch more sidewalks, a bit of nicely-packed trail, and a bit of barely packed trail, where it was hard work just to keep moving.

Entertained by Fresh Air, just a wonderful show, about Martin Luther King Jr from the perspective of a young lawyer working for him. All stuff that happened before most APers were born. I think you can listen to it here

Might go to the Forest Park 10K tomorrow. Conditions will be slow, but would just be going for the workout.

Note

So today I managed to download the 305 on the office PC, but it was strange -- the usual rectangle that shows up with the list of runs on the 305, from which you can select the one(s) you want, well, the very top of the rectangle was visible, and the little heart signs, and that's all. So I moused around a little and in about what I thought might be the right spot the cursor turned to a pointing finger and I clicked, and lo and behold it downloaded.

Is Kenny just playing games with me, testing me? :-)

road running 1:00:32 6.51 mi (9:18 / mi) +492ft 8:41 / mi
ahr:137 max:156 rhr:50 weight:138lbs shoes: pegasus

Around Greenfield, mostly on sidewalks. Perfectly pleasant, nice variety of surfaces depending on the civic responsibility of the various property owners. Certainly better than the streets, which after a few inches snow last night had a good bit of slush. I think slush is about the least pleasant to run in, makes snow and ice seem just fine.

Entertained by This American Life, the theme was "Slow to React," quite wonderful stories.

There is a local law that says you have to shovel sidewalks within 24 of a storm. Most seem to comply, a few here and there don't. The oddest case was of two residences, side by side, each did a decent job on their sidewalk, but there was obviously some contention about exactly where the property line was, because there was about a ten-foot section of sidewalk where the snow was about three feet high. I feel like calling up the local paper to suggest there must be a good story there. At the very least a good photo.

Note

Dinner here with the young ladies. They are both quite amazing, and I mean that in the best sense of the word.

Gail found a really good dessert, plus cooked a good meal to go with it. That and a good dinner last night that my brother cooked means my diet has temporarily gone to hell.

12 PM

trail running 42:47 4.26 mi (10:02 / mi) +538ft 8:58 / mi

Stopped at the Holyoke reservoirs on the way back from Litchfield to do a lap and a bit more. Reasonably pleasant, would if been really pleasant if there was a little more traction.

Entertained by Fresh Air, one of those ones in three segments so that by the time the last segment comes on I have to think really really hard to remember what the first one was about. But success, only took about 20 seconds of a brain scan, first segment was on the effect on thier spouses when troops deploy. Interesting enough.

Downloading the 305 via my office computer seems not to be working, for now at least. Got to get that fixed!

Starting over again. 4 miles, no hills, nothing fast, no falls. Just a mellow pace and Car Talk, including, from an airline pilot calling in, What's the difference between a pizza and an airline pilot's salary? Answer -- the pizza can feed a family of four. For some reason that had me chuckling.

8:55, 8:22, 8:01, 8:00. Felt OK.

Seemed like a good day to go to the track, as it was -8F out when I got up.

track 28:56 3.75 mi (7:43 / mi)
ahr:151 max:165 shoes: mizuno

Plan was 10x400 with a not-really-slow 200 jog between, times between 1:40 and 1:45, and that's about what I did. And wasn't dying at the end, though it took a bit of mental fortitude just to keep at it.

Started out on the trails on Greenfield ridge, but it was quite terrible, not packed out too much so very hard work. Took about a mile to get to the end, fortunately more downhill than up. Then the rest of the way was fine, mostly hard-packed snow, a little ice, a little pavement.

Legs felt not so bad.

A very incomplete survey found the the best-shoveled sidewalks in town -- totally clean, no snow or ice -- were those in front of the hospital and the senior housing.

Time for the weekly Lost and Found report.

Starting weight: 144 (mid-December)
Jan. 1: 142
Jan. 8: 139
Jan 15: 137
Today: 136

Mood: Mood is fine. The Lost is going well, no excess during the day, no snacking after dinner, and the pants are definitely loosening up. Weight fluctuates daily depending on hydration (today seems low), but the trend is definitely good. And that is very nice for morale.

As far as finding any speed, the last couple of hard workouts have been a little better than similar efforts 3 or 4 weeks ago. Fighting the relentless age curve, of course, so everything seems very slow, but there has been a little progress.

It's nice to see what others are doing. I don't know about them, but it helps me knowing that someone else is watching (and trying the same thing).

And, I think it's time to start a little thinking about an O' schedule for 2011. That can give some extra incentive.

12 PM

trail running 1:03:30 5.83 mi (10:54 / mi) +702ft 9:47 / mi
ahr:144 max:155 shoes: pegasus

Tried the snowmobile trails where Phil went a week ago. Well broken out, but not very good traction. Didn't sink in too far, but the very dry snow meant there was nothing to push off against. Needs some time to set up. Of course traffic doesn't help that, rather than pack it down more it just chews it up. Passed two groups of snowmobilers, one going quite slowly and not having much impact on the trail, the other stopped by the side of the trail drinking and smoking, where they had been it was definitely worse.

But it was pretty as could be out, bright and sunny, upper teens and no wind in the woods. Running slowly but a good workout.

New pair of shoes, Nike Pegasus, old standby for a couple of decades.

Cold and windy so opted for the treadmill after coming back from Litchfield. A couple miles warm-up then 5 x quarter-mile @5%, with quarter-mile flat in between, all at about 9-minute pace. Enough to get my heart pumping.

And then to the office as clients are starting to come in. Have to remember what the hell I'm doing. Would be nice if they didn't keep changing the rules, but I guess that's good for business.

Smith indoor track, warm-up. Staying with the heavy shoes today.

track 23:30 3.0 mi (7:50 / mi)
ahr:151 max:170 shoes: saloman

Plan was for 8x400 (200 jog) with the faster parts at 7-minute pace, and that's just about exactly what I did. Started a little slower, which made the whole workout much less of a struggle, and at the end there was the feeling I could have done more. And recovery laps were a little less dawdling.

1:47.1, 1:14 jog
1:48.9, 1:14
1:47.0, 1:14
1:45.8, 1:12

Nice, had the track mostly to myself.

Note

Talk about a surprise.

We used to bank with the local bank, but it got bought out by somebody else, and they got bought out by Fleet, and they got bought out by Bank of America, which we still use, because my online banking is set up there and it would be a nuisance to change. Alhough their online banking seems to work fine, I generally don't like the bank (even though Fleet was worse).

Well, it seems like I screwed up paying a bill, had a check sent to the wrong payee (an affiliated company, for some reason they couldn't just sign the check over to their other part). They sent it back to me. So I called up the BofA online customer service, got a friendly person, she quickly understood what I'd done.

Do you want me to cancel the check and restore the money to your account?

Well, yes (feeling quite surprised that she was offering to do exactly what I wanted).

Hang on, it will just take a minute.

Excuse me, I assume there's a charge for this?

No, hang on, I'll be done in a moment.

Is everyone there as friendly as you are....

Of all the possible outcomes I'd imagined for that phone call, that would surely have been the one pegged as least likely. You never know.

10 AM

road running 45:02 4.86 mi (9:16 / mi) +456ft 8:31 / mi
ahr:138 max:154 rhr:49 weight:137.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Snowstorm just ending, got about 6 inches, sleet storm just starting, just upper teens here, must be a lot warmer higher up. Would be nice if we don't get any rain, but I think it's coming.

Traction not very good, a lot of slipping, though a couple of times I went by where a plow had just been, and that was better. But the nice thing about running on the roads during a storm is that there's almost no traffic, and what there is is going slowly. It's after the storm, when the roads are clear and people are driving fast but there is no shoulder, that's it's dangerous.

Note

Yesterday's slog. Notice the pace chart at the top. Green is between 10 and 15 minutes per km, and there isn't much green.

Note

Just trying out a few thoughts....

Goal #1 is to increase starts, both A meet and local. If I had any responsibility for trying to make this happen, I'd think about the following:

-- For local meets, right now, I'd only find out if I was making any progress once a year, after the year was over, when the clubs report. I'd want data more often, helps you know what's happening and see if anything that is being done is making a difference. Like quarterly at the very least. This shouldn't impose any burden on the clubs.

(And if I was in charge of finances, I'd certainly start a discussion about whether clubs should pay their start-based fees quarterly at the same time. For A meets, by the way, they have to report numbers and pay fees within a month I think.)

-- For local meets, I haven't seen any chatter about clubs doing anything special to try to increase starts. Is anything happening? I mean, the strategic plan has been out there for 7 months, and this is goal #1. I know that each goal has been assigned to a member of the Board (or Glen in some cases), and each Board member was supposed to report to the Board by January 8 as to what was happening and what is planned, but there was no report on this.

And at the WCOC meeting yesterday, there was certainly no talk about what we could do to increase our starts.

Is anything in the works, or are starts just going to increase all on their own?

-- I would certainly think about trying to set up some sort of interclub competition, see who could do the best, either gross numbers or percentage or some combination of the two. Make it a game, have some prizes, and definitely publicize the data. The public nature of AP gives motivation to do more than you might do otherwise. It might work the same way with clubs. Or maybe some clubs, or just a few clubs. But that would be better than nothing.

-- I'm not talking at all about the stuff that needs to be down to get more people out (more events, more publicity, more clubs), just that whatever we do in this area needs a lot more visibility than what's happening now.
12 PM

trail running 9:20 0.6 mi (15:33 / mi) +16ft 15:09 / mi
ahr:133 max:146 rhr:49 weight:137.5lbs shoes: saloman

I didn't figure I could stand 30 minutes of running in small loops around the house, and I couldn't. But it wasn't because it was boring (I was listening to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me), just the somewhat packed snow was still soft enough that I was going to be going anaerobic before much longer. So I quit when I was ahead.

road running 20:00 2.11 mi (9:29 / mi) +295ft 8:22 / mi
ahr:130 max:149 shoes: saloman

And went and did a little road loop. Mostly snowpack, no traffic, upper teens, sunny, quite pleasant, though my legs were not feeling very spry.

trail running 1:25 0.13 mi (10:55 / mi) +26ft 9:09 / mi
ahr:133 max:155 shoes: saloman

And then, what the hell, curious how long one lap would take running hard, just about croaked by the end, and what was it, something over 10-minute pace. Would be good training if I could do it.

Heel was not so bad, different shoes, soft surface. I think I should retire my 212s. Actually, I know I should retire my 212s. Now just have to do it, but I love them. But they are too hard on my feet, at least when running on pavement. Maybe keep them for O'?

Note
rhr:49 weight:137.5lbs

Quite annoyed, my right heel is acting up again, one spot very sore last night and this morning. Damn.

Off to the WCOC winter meeting this afternoon, and perhaps some cell-phone O', though perhaps I should pass on that.

And should I raise the issue of our fees at local meets? Right now I think they are $4 for members and $6 for non-members. Seems low, also no extra fee for e-punch rental. I'd think something like $10 for non-members, $7 for members, $2 discount for having your own e-punch. But then I don't know if we need the money, or what we'd do with more if we had it. Maybe I'll just keep my mouth shut. :-)

A really nice dinner afterwards, plus a very short club meeting to set the spring schedule. Thanks, Rick and Susie!

ahr:158 max:169 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Well, this actually went a little better than expected (though it might be my slowest road 10K ever).

Forest Park 10K, maybe 25% bare pavement, rest mostly hard pack snow with pretty good traction, not much slipping. Cold, about 10F, but hardly any wind so it was OK.

I was hoping to be under 50, put down 49 as my expected time, so 47:50 was a nice surprise. And especially nice in how it transpired, meaning I ran nice and steady, good effort all the way, but always felt pretty good. Heart rate was just right, no more than 162-163 except right at the end, that's a little above my comfort zone but can keep the pace a lot longer than when it's 165-167. Finished without having the feeling of having totally wasted myself, and that was quite nice.

Only down side was for some reason my right thumb got cold. Didn't really bother me while running, my mind was busy with other things, but quite painful for about 10 minutes afterwards as it thawed out. Haven't done that for quite a long time.

Nice to see George and Lyn there.

Note

Interesting time last night and this morning on my now only weekly trip to visit my mom, or more accurately, to check in with the 3 caregivers, see what problems/issues they've got (because there's always something), figure out what if anything needs to be done/changed, plus deal with any other household issues, pay the bills, handle the mail, whatever needs doing. Thank goodness I don't have to shovel the driveway, it's plowed by someone who shows up, does the work, disappears, and never sends a bill, seriously -- did my folks at some point buy a lifetime contract?

And so the main issues this time were (1) my mom had spent the better part of two or three days being pissed, or difficult, or whatever, mainly just wanting to be left along, she didn't need any help, and (2) a couple of the caregivers think that the third one is a slacker.

As to #1, well, that was distressing, so I talked with the primary caregiver a while about what could be done, and the bottom line was that not much could be done, that's just the way she is and the way she has always been, difficult and private and not totally in touch with reality. And the reality is she can't manage on her own, not even close, not in eating or walking or toileting or cleanliness, but she thinks she can. As I said, a distressing conversation, though not one that we haven't had before in one form or another.

And as to #2, well, that was distressing too, because I think there is some truth to it, she does leave a good bit to be desired. So there was talk about finding someone different, and how to go about doing that, and that there was no guarantee the replacement would be any better. And mainly the "primary" was a little fed up with the "slacker" because primary is the one shampooing the carpet when mom goes to the bathroom when she's not yet in the bathroom, even though it's on slacker's shift. And each is supposed to be responsible for her shift.

I'm also just letting primary vent. Though what I really want to do is vent some myself....

And then sat and read through the week's log, they take extensive notes of everything that happens, and I mean everything, more than you might want to know. And it wasn't real pretty.

So I went to bed feeling quite depressed.

And woke up early, maybe 5, and thinking about it a bunch more. And that turned out to be very useful. Because I decided that there was no reason feel bad, or responsible, or guilty, because mom was pissed. Because it wasn't my fault. And because that's just the way she is, and has been, even though I never really realized it because she was so private, just now I see her a lot more and understand more what makes her tick.

And she was getting about the best care possible, even if she didn't realize it.

And knowing there was really nothing better I could do about mom, then it also seemed that slacker could be a whole lot worse, and we should just live with the status quo there too. And that mellowed me out even more.

And then checked with the day nurse, who comes at 7, and she was cool with things, and then mom was up for a bathroom trip and acting very friendly, and everything seemed OK and by 7:15 I was off to home because things needed doing back here.

And thinking, so much in life is about choices, and some of those choices are about what you let bother you, or don't let bother you. And you can make yourself miserable. Or not.

What the hell, time for a new activity (or at least one not done for many years), put on Gail's snowshoes and did 5 laps around the mountain bike course. Got a lot easier after the first two laps, but never easy, even though I was just walking most of the time. Clipped my ankles a few times but managed to stay upright the whole time.

Can't say it was a lot of fun, but very pretty out, lots of deer tracks (maybe just from one deer?).

Was intending to do 3 miles at something around 7:10 to 7:15 pace, but lost my enthusiasm/willpower and stopped at 2. Working harder at that point than I wished. Oh well. Time for 3000 was 13:30, did that a year ago in 12:00. Long ways to go.

And then another mile and a half, felt not so bad but even it was a little bit harder work than I wanted. Oh well.

Seems to have snowed a bit overnight, about a foot so far. 25 minutes to clear the deck, will need another 10 for the steps, fortunately the farmer's tractor does the main job. Round two later in the day should be less.

Would be nice if Ali and Alex came back so all this stuff would disappear.

Note

Finished up the shoveling, another 30 minutes, maybe another 6", total of 18". May be several days before I get back on the trails. The ones on the Greenfield Ridge get lots of walkers, but this will take a good bit of traffic to beat down. And I expect the snowmobiles will be out in force, but with snow this light it takes probably three days before it sets up enough so you can get sufficient traction. And my recent favorite place, Earl's trails, it's supposed to get some foot traffic throughout the winter, but it's far enough from my office that for the next 3 months the only day I'll even consider going there is on Sundays.

I really could do without the snow, but if we get it, a lot nicer this way than the heavy wet stuff (which also brings down trees, which brings down power lines...).

Note

Glen's latest report to the Board is here.

There have been times when I wonder if we are making any progress, but there are also times (like after reading this) that I think that he is laying the groundwork in a lot of areas, and we don't yet know what will bear fruit and what won't. I'm glad to see so much going on, and just have to remember things don't happen overnight.

Down to get the mail. Beautiful out, snowing hard, little bit of wind so when it was behind me I was running in dead air, and therefore sweating away, and when it was in my face it was a little nippy but not bad at all. Saw 6 vehicles, half of them snowplows, and the roads were perfectly fine.

Compare this to, say, Atlanta. On the news last night it said Atlanta had only 8 snow-removing vehicles, and 2 of them were out of commission because they had run into each other, which when you think about it demonstrates an amazing level of incompetence. The good news, the newsreader said enthusiastically, was they were bringing in 6 times as many pieces of equipment to deal with the snow. I don't think those extra 48 plows are going to really clean up the city. But maybe they feel better trying to look like they are doing something other than just waiting for it to warm up.

Note

Went to see Black Swan last night. Quite an interesting movie. I have certainly enjoyed other movies more (like everything else I've seen recently, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, True Grit, and The King's Speech, none of which I wanted to end), I suppose that is because the star (Natalie Portman) is so unsympathetic. But it was still quite a fascinating film and I was glad we went.

Trails on Greenfield Ridge, not pushing the pace but every uphill is still work. Packed snow, a little loose but not icy, so traction was decent without being great. Had planned to wear my microspikes just to test them, but forgot them at home.

Plan was to go for an hour, and made it without too much extra willpower required, but an hour is still a long run these days. Need to slowly get to where I can go an hour and a quarter or an hour an a half without croaking. But (and shouldn't forget this, you tend to take the good news for granted, and just focus on the problems), training has been going well.

Indoor track with Phil, warm-up. Track suddenly changed from being all ours to lots of people, local college team arrived to practice (and, I assume, to see if they could pick up any tips from us).

track 15:47 2.12 mi (7:27 / mi)

Same as last week, 6x400 with 200 slow jog between, except I had my lighter shoes on and that was definitely noticeable. Plus working a little harder with company. Overall a little faster than planned, so any thoughts of doing more than 6 soon disappeared. Regardless, it was still better than last week.

1:32.7, 1:13 jog
1:36.6, 1:15
1:37.8, 1:15

With Phil at Mt. Tom, just running in the woods. Maybe 4" of snow, enough so that it was noticeably more work for me at least. Just seemed like hard work the whole time. Oh well, some days are just like that. Nice to get out with company at least. And woods running certainly is specific training.

Saw a lot of deer tracks, but no deer.

rhr:51 weight:139lbs

Time for the weekly update on the progress at Lost and Found (yup, it still exists, it's just very private).

Average starting weight: 144
Average current weight: 139
Average mood: motivated, pleased with progress, but still pissed

Got a couple inches snow overnight, just enough to make running the Forest Park 5K unappealing -- the reason to go is to get a hard workout and a measure of where things stand, with the snow the former is still possible, but the latter not, plus there is more chance of screwing up hamstrings -- so I think it's a day to try out my new Kahtoolas. See if they last more than 5 minutes.

1 PM

trail running 55:39 4.82 mi (11:33 / mi) +876ft 9:51 / mi
ahr:144 max:160 shoes: saloman

Earl's trails again (they are so nice), good run though I was getting tired towards the end. Saw one other runner out, plus a bunch of small animal tracks, plus an owl.

2 to 3' new snow, so I tried the Kahtoona microspikes. Overall sense is that they are good.

On the plus side, the traction certainly was better. I went on some sidehill stuff where there was quite a slope (I don't know how the mountain bikers manage, but I guess they do), and the grip was excellent. In fact the grip was always excellent. And the things stayed in place, didn't come off, didn't break.

On the minus side, I caught them on the ground a few times while I was bringing a foot forward, not lifting my foot quite high enough. And they felt heavy. Weighed them when I got back, 180 grams per foot. For reference, the lightest shoes I wear, the Talon 212s, are about 250 a shoe, and the Salomans, which seem to be the most comfortable shoes right now, are about 450 a shoe. So with the spikes on I was up to 630 a foot, and it felt it. But without them, I would certainly have been slipping a lot.

Will have to try them some more under different conditions. And remember not to wear them in the house or the car.

Earl's trails again, just a short outing, mostly around the maze of trails low down, trying to see how they all connect. Really nice conditions once again, though snow is expected tonight -- one assumes, the weather often being a contrary soul, that we will now get a lot of snow since Ali has left town, and and won't get rid of it until she gets back. :-)

Was hoping to go to the 5K in Springfield tomorrow, but will probably pass if there is much snow.

Back down to Earl's trails, such a nice place to run. And the conditions were good, just little bits of ice that were no problem, lots of bare ground.

Still working on exploring all the trails. I figured out a couple more sections, how things connect. Still a few more places to check out.

Entertained by a very pleasant This American Life from last summer, which finished at the very moment I reached my car. At which point, no longer distracted by the stories, I realized to my delight that I'd made it around without doing any bad things to my ankle.

Just one of those days when you feel really glad to be able to get out and run.

ahr:129 max:144 rhr:51 weight:140lbs shoes: saloman

Just another day of playing it safe by staying on a smooth surface. Hardly notice the ankle at all, though my guess is I'll roll it a few more times before it's healed. 9:49, 8:31, 8:28, 8:26.

Entertainment -- and the treadmill is tolerable as long as there is some entertainment -- was a Fresh Air interview with a guy who knows all about the bad things that happen when all our electronic gadgets enter the waste stream. It's not pretty, even stuff disposed of via electronics recycling outfits usually ends up being shipped to some third world country for disposal in some disaster area. Makes you wonder if you shouldn't just bury the old laptop in the back yard.

The other end of the product life is when you buy it, and I actually remembered the name of the place he said you could go to check on how much bad stuff the manufactures are putting in, and ideally not buy the bad ones. It's EPEAT, reasonably interesting.

Note

Getting back in the swing of going to movies, went to The King's Speech this evening. Totally enjoyed it, although not a whole lot happens. And it's amazing, it gets an R rating for a few cuss words, whereas blowing up lots of people is more acceptable.

I was listening to a Fresh Air piece this morning at the track, movie reviewer for NPR with his take on the best of last year, top of the list was Winter Bone. Hadn't seen many of his top 10, but had seen this one, and loved it. But he said it wouldn't get any of the awards, and mentioned The King's Speech as a sure bet for Oscars. Not that I would know, the people in the movie business see these things with a whole different eye than I do.

(Similarly, I was reading an article in The New Yorker about a fashion designer. Quite a remarkable talent. Some people's brains just work in a completely different way than mine does.)

7 AM

track 9:03 1.0 mi (9:03 / mi)

Indoor track at Smith College, just me and a couple of walkers, very nice. Took a while to get any oil in the joints.

track 16:44 2.13 mi (7:51 / mi)
ahr:154 max:170 weight:139.5lbs shoes: saloman

A set of Bricker intervals (planned 8 x 400, did 6). Based on my recent 5K pace of about 7:20, I figured 7 minute pace (i.e. 1:45) would be about right. Certainly glad I wasn't trying to go faster. Only mitigating factor was I had my heavy shoes on.

1:47.2, 1:15 (for a slow 200)
1:45.8, 1:15
1:41.3, 1:19
1:45.1, 1:15
1:43.5, 1:15
1:41.3

It occurred to me at some point that no matter what training I do, I've gotten so slow that my orienteering may forever suck, but I banished that thought quickly. Got to start someplace.

track 8:57 1.0 mi (8:57 / mi)

And a little more, with heavy legs.

A short review of 2010 --

1. Most important accomplishment was the last two months of the year, taking care of mom. We never had a close relationship (she wasn't the mothering type and we both value our privacy), but after she had a fall and a few days in the hospital, someone needed to get her home, and that was me. And then she needed 24-hour care and decisions needed to be made and things done and the household taken care of, and it all dropped in my lap, and I have no experience in such things.

But sometimes when you have no choice it makes it easier. And I had no choice. Things are well now, though she is very frail. But there is an unknown journey ahead. You just do the best you can and hope it suffices.

2. It was a discouraging year for running, sore feet from early spring through late fall. Things don't heal fast, if at all, at this age, though time seems to have at least a little healing power. So not so much orienteering, and certainly not much satisfying orienteering because my conditioning was so poor. The low point was the Highlander, just totally battered. The high point, not sure there was one.

On the other hand, I got out on my bike a lot for me, 2000 miles, included several long rides that will be good memories.

At this point I have hopes for 2011, but it depends on how the legs hold up.

3. It feels like I spent a good bit of time organizing O' stuff, helped with WCOC and NEOC A meets very modestly, both of which went well, plus the Corn Maze Champs and the Superstars. The latter two were both a lot of work and a lot of fun.

My guess is for 2011 I will do a good bit less.

4. I continue to be hopeful for progress for the federation, and disappointed at the lack thereof.

5. I continue to cherish many friends in the sport, even when they are pissed at me. :-)

So far 2011 has gotten off to a bad start. I sure hope things improve.

Earl's trails, turned out better than expected, maybe 75% bare ground, the rest a mix of snow and slop, almost no ice. And shoes had a more aggressive tread than yesterday's, so really no slipping at all. Mild (45F), foggy, just starting to rain a little, soaking wet feet after about the first 30 minutes (there was a lot more slop on the trail highest up, no way to avoid it).

Long run for sure, but such a pleasant route, endlessly meandering around and about and up and down. Didn't have a map, but knew where I was just about all the time.

Wrenched my right ankle with about 20 minutes left, stepped on a root wrong, hurt pretty good, but not so bad that I couldn't keep moving -- I always figured keeping moving, if at all possible, was the preferred option in such circumstances, keeps the blood flowing -- and in a few minutes it had calmed down. A little sore now, not terrible, but I suspect I'll be feeling it for a while. Gail is telling me to ice it, maybe I will use my brain and do so....

Back home after spending the night at Ratlum Mountain, which meant I dodged the local 10K's, just as good.

Out on Greenfield ridge for the first time in a while. Fairly crappy conditions, quite slippery, either ice or wet snow, not sure which was worse. But made it around with just one fall, and that not much of one, though I did come close a bunch of other times. Will be nicer when the gets colder again, will change to a mix of ice and crusty snow, but I think that will have a little more grip.

Or maybe I'll just run elsewhere for a few days. The indoor track opens up on Monday, so I might try there from time to time, though that means an early start as it's only open to the public from 6 to 8 am.

Happy New Year to all. And Happy Birthday to all orienteers. Got to celebrate, I'm 67 and still upright.
