trail running 37:22 intensity: (16 @1) + (7:28 @2) + (27:43 @3) + (1:55 @4) 2.59 mi (14:26 / mi) +384ft 12:39 / mi

At Ratlum Mountain, two loops around the famous dog-walking loop with Charlie (but not Sassy, Sassy was out snowshoing with the ladies). Warm afternoon, lots of slipping and sliding in the snow. So our pace was quite pedestrian. And therefore very enjoyable.

So that finishes off 2010 with 23 straight days of running. Don't know what got into me.

Thursday Dec 30, 2010 #

Note

Went sledding with the family (but not mom). No injuries requiring hospitalization. Action shot is of my niece Alex, who had more gumption than the rest of us and was starting higher up.

3 PM

trail running 37:31 intensity: (19 @1) + (54 @2) + (21:08 @3) + (15:10 @4) 2.85 mi (13:09 / mi) +292ft 11:59 / mi
ahr:145 max:159 shoes: saloman

At Five Ponds in Litchfield. Quite a bit of snow, somewhat packed, somewhat not. Persisted better than I thought I would (at a very slow pace of course), though walked a little bit. Good training.

Wednesday Dec 29, 2010 #

Note

Thought I was going to go hang-gliding today. Not actually flying, of course, I'm not an idiot, but helping JJ access the launch pad at Skinner with his glider. But he took a recon hike up with his harness and a shovel -- the snow conditions were manageable, but the wind was too strong. So no flying.

Would have been quite fun to see him in action. I had my camera ready.

2 PM

run/hike 38:52 intensity: (31 @1) + (13:19 @2) + (20:13 @3) + (4:49 @4) 3.42 mi (11:22 / mi) +1171ft 8:35 / mi
ahr:135 max:156 rhr:51 weight:141lbs shoes: saloman

Twice up and down South Sugarloaf. No way I can run it all the way in the snow (it's packed, but a bit slippery), so just did a minute running, a minute walking, and so on. Just about the right effort, got my heart going but not painful.

12:27 up, 7:19 down, 11:54 up, 7:11 down.

Once again the climb calculated is quite bogus. Actually climb is about 260m.

Tuesday Dec 28, 2010 #

Note

Finally got around to doing the shoveling from the big storm (all of 4-5" here). Took about 20 minutes, reasonably vigorously. Apparently some folks are spending quite a bit more time on this. This seems like enough.

3 PM

road running 46:52 intensity: (35 @1) + (42 @2) + (27:41 @3) + (17:54 @4) 5.46 mi (8:35 / mi) +745ft 7:36 / mi
ahr:145 max:160 rhr:51 weight:140.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Back roads in Montague, both more protected from the wind, plus only see a car once about every 10 minutes. Getting dark by the time I was done.

treadmill 53:38 intensity: (34 @1) + (13:27 @2) + (39:37 @3) 6.0 mi (8:56 / mi)
ahr:133 max:139 shoes: saloman

No way I was running outside in the wind (30-40 mph), so off to the gym after we got home. Six miles at the treadmill, all at about a 9-minute pace.

So clearly there was a need for entertainment, and the choice was between Judge Judy and Car Talk. Car Talk is on my ipod (and Judge Judy definitely is not), whereas JJ was on the big-screen TV, but no sound, just captions.

So I started out with JJ (remember, that's Judge Judy, not JJ), and it was OK, guy and a girl arguing, she says he owes her a couple months rent, plus payback of a loan to bail out of his car, plus compensation for the fact the police took her gun when they had a fight. He's a loser, that's clear. She wins on the rent, she wins on the loan, but the gun is her dad's not hers, so she doesn't have it legally so she loses on the gun.

All of which is fine, I follow along on the captions, but what I'm missing is the sarcasm, and the sneers, and the put-downs that make a show like JJ appealing (and then only for so long).

But even that's not the worst. Because the next segment comes on and I find myself having to concentrate on the captions, and flipping back and forth between the picture and the captions, and they aren't synched, and my brain is starting to fail. And I'm thinking, this shouldn't be so hard, but it is, sort of the way I used to think of ski-O', it looks so simple, except when the heart is going and you're flipping back between one thing and another (the map and the terrain, or in my case the captions and the picture), it's not as easy as it looks.

And before long I've revved up the ipod and Tom and Ray are spouting there wisdom, and I don't have to think any more, just let the miles pass.

Clearly I need more training with JJ.

In Litchfield, over to the course and around it once. Snowstorm just getting going but perfectly fine out for running. Scared off what must have been a couple hundred geese.

Only pisser is that my brother's flight from Texas got cancelled. But it seems like everything has been rescheduled, just three days later. So we were having the family get-together once day after Christmas, now it will just be four. We never been big on exact stuff anyway, so that/s no big deal, his son can't come on the new schedule so I'll miss seeing him.

Note

One of these days I will get my web page brought up to date (the software I used no longer works with my Mac operating system), though I'm pretty sure that the only way that is going to happen is if I hire some young fellow (anyone interested for a suitable fee?).

In the meantime, I still use it as a place to post maps, photos, whatever, with links from my AP log. Which doesn't make it easy to find things.

So here's a list of the maps from this year....

A decent warm-up.

5K in Forest Park in Springfield. Like many other 5k's over the years when I have recently resumed training after a time off for injury -- the effort was there but the watch was just running a little faster than wished. But you have to start somewhere. And hopefully no damage done.

Miles were 7:33, 7:35, 7:05, 44. Phil was 35 seconds ahead, Lyn a little behind me (30 seconds?) and George just behind her.

Cold, upper 20s, but bare ground. Probably overdressed (clown pants, three shirts, hat and gloves).

10 AM

road running 3:04 intensity: (11 @1) + (38 @2) + (2:15 @3) 0.26 mi (11:48 / mi) +59ft 9:43 / mi

And back up to the car.

Note

Went to see True Grit for Xmas eve entertainment. Thought the theater might be empty but it was just about full. Enjoyed it greatly, and for the second movie in a row was never even tempted to look at my watch.

My one complaint -- and as Gail said on the way out, we were surely the only ones bothered by this -- is they make a big deal about the story taking place in Arkansas, possibly straying a bit into eastern Oklahoma, but it clearly doesn't look like Arkansas (topography and flora are wrong). Actually filmed some in Texas and some around Santa Fe. I assume that's because of tax credits? If so, they could at least strip all the Arkansas references out. Ah, but I guess, as I said, no one notices.

3 PM

trail running 37:37 intensity: (38 @1) + (4:42 @2) + (14:25 @3) + (17:52 @4) 3.5 mi (10:46 / mi) +840ft 8:46 / mi

On Mt. Toby from the gate -- jeep road, link trail, back on Robert Frost. No snow, ice here and there but no problem, quite a few frost pockets. Perfectly fine, but add an inch of snow and I would run here because of the ice (sometimes you get ice just in low spots, so even with a little snow covering it, it looks flat and smooth and you know the ice is there, whereas today a lot of the ice was from seepage, just a thin layer over the ground, add a little snow and you'd have no idea where the ice is).

Might try the Forest Park 5k in the morning....

trail running 55:02 intensity: (57 @1) + (7:20 @2) + (33:37 @3) + (13:08 @4) 4.75 mi (11:35 / mi) +938ft 9:45 / mi
ahr:139 max:156 rhr:50 weight:141lbs shoes: saloman

Back to Earl's trails, still in excellent condition, they don't seem to suffer from frost pockets or ice under current conditions (cold but no snow), as most of the old woods roads do.

Another nice loop, checking out more trails, slowly learning my way. It is a fun place to run.

Wednesday Dec 22, 2010 #

1 PM

trail running 51:45 intensity: (30 @1) + (2:38 @2) + (30:59 @3) + (17:38 @4) 4.89 mi (10:35 / mi) +427ft 9:47 / mi
ahr:143 max:161 rhr:50 weight:141lbs shoes: saloman

Went up to Hawley to check out a few of the trails. Different climate up there, 10 degrees colder, couple of inches of snow still left from some earlier dusting, bits of ice here and there. But running was still perfectly fine as long as you stay relaxed on the ice.

Stopped perhaps half a dozen times (see the sudden drops in the heart rate) to take a more careful look at the topo map and figure out where I was.

Lots more up there to check out. But the woods are rather junky, quite a lot of deadfall from previous storms. So the O' potential, even just for training on the USGS, is about zero.

Highly recommended reading -- Alex's blog.

Note

An anniversary of a sort -- two years ago today I had my prostate removed. Everything continues to be just fine. If there is anyone reading this who has to deal with such, I am more than happy to share my experience if it would be helpful.

3 PM

trail running 34:34 intensity: (1:01 @1) + (3:13 @2) + (17:12 @3) + (13:08 @4) 3.78 mi (9:09 / mi) +341ft 8:25 / mi
ahr:142 max:156 rhr:52 shoes: saloman

Long day. In Litchfield until mid-afternoon, most of the time with lawyer and accountant dealing with mom's affairs. Headed home, a short and very pleasant stop at Charlie and Rhonda's to pick up a shirt I'd left there, decided when I got out of the car there and it was cold and windy that I was going to pass on the day's run. But then heading off from there, right past George and Lyn's favorite training area, McLean Game Refuge, I thought why not.

Got going with just enough daylight for about 30 minutes. And it wasn't that cold and it wasn't that windy and the legs felt OK. Only problem was I ran harder than the easy run intended (got to learn not to do that, there are supposed to be easy days). But still very nice.

And then hustled home just in time for dinner with old orienteering friends, John Rogers and Beth Elliot, visiting from Ohio, and Walter Goodridge, probably 3 hours of catching up and telling old stories. And laughing a whole lot. A whole lot. :-)

Note

So far I think we have 3 takers for the 5 or 10 Kilo club -- Boris (10), Becks (5), and me (5). Any others? Maybe I should suggest some candidates?

My starting point is 144 pounds (just to mix measuring systems), goal time is this spring.

3 PM

treadmill 33:43 intensity: (2:08 @1) + (8:24 @2) + (14:45 @3) + (8:26 @4) 4.0 mi (8:26 / mi)
ahr:136 max:160 rhr:50 weight:141lbs shoes: saloman

Partly I just didn't feel like running outside today, partly I wanted to run just a little faster. So off to the treadmill. A couple of miles, 9:33 and 8:27, then a couple of half-miles in 3:33, with a slower half between and after. Felt OK to run just over 7 minute pace, but probably wouldn't have felt OK if I'd tried to do it much longer.

Sunday Dec 19, 2010 #

Note

Today's route. Don't know how much of the disagreement between the mapped bike trails and the 305 is due to which one. In some places the bike trails feel OK, in other places they are quite generalized, missing the subtleties. And the 305, you never know what it will do.

12 PM

trail running 1:12:58 intensity: (50 @1) + (4:24 @2) + (39:38 @3) + (28:06 @4) 6.04 mi (12:05 / mi) +876ft 10:37 / mi
ahr:144 max:160 rhr:50 weight:141.5lbs shoes: saloman

On the bike trails from Batchelor Street on the south side of the Notch. Much rockier. Struggling a bit on some of the hills, and pretty tired afterwards. But this was clearly a long run for me.

The elevation gain listed continues to only have a modest connection with reality. Counted the lines on the O' map and got about 450 meters climb.

Oh, and for Phil, nice job mapping the bike trails in the maze just east of the power line and south of the South Side trail. With my glasses on, I can't read the map that well on the run, so can't vouch for every detail, but the mapping sure felt right on.

trail running 1 [0] +3855ft
ahr:144 max:164 rhr:51 weight:141lbs shoes: saloman

At North Sugarloaf, just across the river. There are a couple of bike trails there, been there once, thought I would look again, but this time I had a nice map, thanks to Clint's suggestion. A biker client of mine had sent me GPS tracks of several places he rode, so I found that, and in short order had printed myself out a quite nice map. Which made the run much more enjoyable, following along with all the little ripples in the terrain.

Ran all the hills, slowly and just barely. But I think that is a little progress.

It seems the chunky contingent may pursue my "lose 10 kilos" challenge (alternatively lose 5 kilos). Ten would be a bit much for me, by 5 would be excellent, though the starting point is the 144/2.2 = 65.4. Got down there once about 4 years ago, felt great, but not sure if I have the discipline again.

By the way, I figured the climb on today's run was about 250 meters. AP calculates it as 1,175. Huh?

trail running 45:15 intensity: (34 @1) + (1:51 @2) + (23:41 @3) + (19:09 @4) 3.62 mi (12:30 / mi) +958ft 10:00 / mi

Ok, here's version 2 of the profile. Looks a little closer to reality. :-)

Back to the same area (why change when you're having fun), conditions still excellent. Parked at the bunker, checked out the northeast section lower down. Legs not real spry, but made it back up the hill OK, and the knee I bashed yesterday wasn't bothering me. I think I still need quite a few more outings to check out the whole network.

Note

The latest version of the trail network (larger version) --

Note

Went to a movie last night, first in quite a while, the last of the Millennium trilogy, Luftslottet som sprängdes. It was leaving town in another day, only on at 9:30 pm, plays for 150 minutes so well past our bedtime, but we went anyway. And despite the fact that I'm not sure it's really a particularly good movie, and that you really have to have read the books to know what is going on, and then of course you know what is going to happen, despite all that I quite enjoyed it. And the two and a half hours went by very quickly.

Though I could see why it was leaving town, only about 5 others in the theater.

Note

Control count is now 405/800. That's not so bad, over 50%. But I may not get any more for a while.

1 PM

trail running 44:15 intensity: (48 @1) + (5:08 @2) + (22:30 @3) + (15:49 @4) 4.02 mi (11:00 / mi) +702ft 9:26 / mi
ahr:141 max:160 rhr:50 weight:141lbs shoes: saloman

Back at the same place as yesterday, adding to my exploration of the trail network, with Phil for company. Really nice once again, despite one crash (lost a little skin on one knee). I'd guess I've done about 50-60% of the trails.

And the legs are slowly getting used to running again.

trail running 38:54 intensity: (48 @1) + (5:49 @2) + (20:11 @3) + (12:06 @4) 3.63 mi (10:43 / mi) +472ft 9:32 / mi
ahr:139 max:158 rhr:53 shoes: saloman

Another really fine outing, this time over close to the Notch, heading out past the old missile silo. Same conditions as yesterday, low 20s, breezy, just a bit of snow but now mostly bare ground.

These runs on the bike trails build up more anticipation than ever before as to what the 305 will show as my route. On an O' map I usually know where I am, and on trail runs on USGS maps I have a pretty good idea, but the combination of long undulating slopes without many obvious features and the bike trails continually turning makes it anywhere from hard to nearly impossible to keep track of where I am as I go along. Did pretty well today, but still surprised a couple of times.

Question -- anyone know a nice way to display the tracks from several runs on the same map (preferably USGS)?

ahr:142 max:162 rhr:53 weight:142lbs shoes: saloman

Well, that worked out nice. Phil was free, I was free, so off once again to the NW side of the Holyoke Range. Colder today, low 20s, and a light dusting of snow, but quite wonderful.

Did a different loop, trying to figure out more connections. Towards the end we could have saved a bunch of distance by bushwhacking, but the point was to explore the trails. A really nice outing, good run and good company, and certainly what qualifies as an over-distance effort these days.

And then, prodded by Jeff and Judy about my lack of reading in recent months, stop at B&N and bought three books. Will be fun to get back into the habit.

Note

My route from Saturday's night-O' at Ratlum Mountain.

Got caught in a jungle leaving 3, two extra side excursions on the way to 5, and didn't realize there was a #16 until most of the way to the finish. But could have been worse!

2 PM

trail running 36:30 intensity: (51 @1) + (4:22 @2) + (24:32 @3) + (6:45 @4) 2.87 mi (12:42 / mi) +574ft 10:41 / mi
ahr:138 max:163 weight:142.5lbs shoes: saloman

Went back down to check out more of the bike trails on the northwest side of the Holyoke Ridge. Fabulous for running, not so rocky as the ones on the south side of the O' map, and even though the hills are longer, the trails meander a lot and are never very steep. On a gloomy verging on wet late afternoon it was quite gorgeous out.

Also carried the bike map of the trails. As you could say about some of my professional work at times, the map was a mixture of fact and fiction. I wasn't expecting much in the way of accuracy and I got even less. On the other hand, that made it more interesting, since you really never knew where a mapped trail was going to go.

A couple of deer, one biker, no hunters.

Oh, and where I parked this time there is a sign from the town police saying no trespassing (and also a sign saying no motorized vehicles, which makes you think that if you're on foot maybe trespassing is OK. But I wasn't sure I wanted to park there. Saw a neighbor out doing chores, asked him what the story was, he said not to worry, nice place to walk and the police don't care. Good to know.

Will try to check out the area some more while the conditions are still OK. It's just a lot of fun going someplace new.

Note

Here's another view of where I was today, over on the far right section.

zumba 20:00 [1]

Group session with Marie as a very professional instructor. I log this only because I did in fact work up a good sweat. But I really have zero talent for such things.

8 AM

treadmill 25:45 [3] 3.0 mi (8:35 / mi)
shoes: saloman

Because I was nicely warmed up, and not interested in the pilates/yoga session, some time on the treadmill seemed in order. Start at 6 mph, upped it by .2 every quarter mile, so I got up to 8.2 mph for the last quarter, which at least got the sweat pouring out and the breathing a little harder. Miles in 9:40, 8:30, 7:35.

Actually didn't feel so bad, and better than being outside in the cold rain.

Note

Went shopping for pants. Seems like I need about a 31.5 waist. Seems like they come in 30 or 32. Evaluated the situation from a big-picture perspective. Got a couple pair at 30. They are definitely too tight now, hopefully less so in a month, hopefully comfortable in 2 or 3 months. I have been getting to be quite the blob.

Night-O at Ratlum Mountain. My technique left a lot to be desired (even though I did have the fastest split on one leg!), as did my speed, but at least I managed to get around with doing any substantial damage to myself. And did enjoy it.

Exploring an area on the north side of the Holyoke Range west of the Mt. Norwottuck map, never been back there much but there are a bunch of bike trails been built in the last few years, so I thought I'd go have a look (without my bike). Lots of long steep slopes, but the bikes trails do a nice job of meandering their way up and down, so things are quite runnable even for me.

Looked around a little down low, then gradually worked my way up. Coming down was certainly quicker.

Still deer season, but I had on lots of very bright clothing and didn't worry about it.

Lots more trails out there to explore, here's a map put out by the bikers with their version of where the trails went a few years ago. The single-tracks have many more turns than shown, but the map gives a general idea.

Legs weren't too spry, but a nice outing. Starting to get quite a bit of hoar frost, but not so much it's a problem.

Finally got my butt out to do just a little training. It's prime deer hunting season, so over to Mt. Tom to run in the nice section of woods just west of I-91. Except after about 15 minutes I'd run out of gas, or at least run out of gas as far as any uphill running in the woods was concerned. So changed plans, over to the nearest trail, and finished up on that. Working way too hard for the pace, but I guess that's what happens when you're fat and out of shape.

Route.

Note

Here's a map of all the controls for the orienteering at Quabbin yesterday afternoon (and a larger version).

Every course went up the east side and had #13, then went to some of 14-17. The shorter versions south towards the last two common controls (34 and 35). Meanwhile, the faster/stronger folks did 18, and then there were various longer or shorter permutations on the west side of the road, all of which ended with 26 before heading to the negative terrain at 29-33.

It was quite good fun setting the courses once I decided on the concept and the general flow. Just head out, keep marking points with the main requirement being that they be distinct and visible since we were only using streamers. The hassle was that the vegetation had thickened up substantially in some places, especially east of the N/S road.

And then drawing the individual courses was both tedious and amusing, the latter because I could think for each person where I did or did not want to send them -- like for Boris, better not send him up the hill to 18, he's too weak, but Sam and Ali sure can go up there. As JJ said, everyone was running against their reputation.

Note

For historical reference, here's the map for the Billygoat at Quabbin in 1987. Course was 14.3 km, no skips allowed. And here is the race report and results -- page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4.

Note

And here's the route for yesterday's sprint at UMass. Interesting that I carried a compass, never used it, and just now noticed there are no north lines on the map. Folks seemed to have trouble at 9 (going off the map) and 11 (ending up on the south side of the wall). My only problem was a few meters off at 8.

Very brisk Sunday morning. Seemed like there were more orienteers out and about than students.

And here is my route hanging streamers at Quabbin last Friday. QR lined up very nicely this time (sometimes it takes lots of adjusting).

A careful look will show a couple of diversions, both to hang streamers that were not used. They were intended for a course for Alex's mom Kitty, but then she was heading home to Rochester and didn't run. Which simplified things greatly, as I was having a hard time get a course for her as in a couple of places the trails had major obstacles. Not sure what i would have ended up doing, but fortunately didn't have to deal with it.

The other concern was dogs. One was Kitty's, but it was also on the way back to Rochester. The other was Presto. Lori was under instructions to deny any connection to O' if approached by a cop, but thankfully they were nowhere to be seen.

Note

One more map to add from the weekend -- the ski-O' map (and the map holder, very sturdy and quite inseparable from the map). The map was perfect, hand-drawn too, no point in OCAD as we didn't have a printer that would handle 1 x 12" boards.

orienteering 23:37 [4] 3.1 mi (7:37 / mi)
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Alex's sprint at UMass. Really fun, although like pretty much any orienteering I've ever done, there was a sizable element of just plain hard work. My 305 was DOA, so no heart rate data, but it was pumping away quite vigorously.

Surprised that the fast guys weren't faster (best time was 20 minutes), but I think they all had a problem or two.

I'll put the map up in a while, but I'm moving in super slow motion this evening, just no energy and can't get anything down. A bit of stress getting things set for the weekend and also dealing with Litchfield matters, and I think the gas tank is a bit low.

Cold (about 30F), but Alex had her office open for refuge and toilets, for which she gets many gold stars.

Note

Over to Quabbin for the final event of the weekend, mass start relay training (or just training with other people around who are maybe going to the same control, or maybe not). Different courses for all 19 starters. Seemed to work out well, mass start, didn't get the mass finish I'd hoped for, but everyone was in within a 20-minute window, and on a cold day with no shelter that is a very good thing.

First orienteering at Quabbin in 15-20 years (other than a few solo training runs). Way back when it was the site of the 1979 Team Trials, a New England Champs, a couple of Billygoats, and a number of local meets. But they really didn't like us. If we'd had any sense, we'd have made a nice donation to their "Friends" organization and I'm sure that would have greased the necessary wheels.

The contours are still good but the vegetation has changed a lot -- still a lot of really nice forest but also now more thick areas. And in the growing season there are quite a lot of ferns. But for what we were doing today it seemed to work real well.

Again, map (with all the controls) coming....

Superstars weekend. Just managed to stay one step ahead as far as having things ready when they were supposed to be ready. Weekend was great, but my superstars performance left a lot to be desired, wrapped up by a dismal showing at the bowling lanes, though at least I managed to stick the axe in the axe throw, in not so many tries.

But the event was really fun. Laughed and laughed. Of the seven regular events, 6 were repeats from last time 20 years ago. The new one, the ski-O was fabulous. And then we had the bonus events -- crutches (around the ski-o course on crutches), the axe throw, and the wife-carrying race (or husband or partner) -- plus a team competition, plus some awesome pole dancing. As I said, I laughed and laughed.

Hanging streamers at Quabbin, 38 of them. Easy in places, the contours are still excellent, harder in others where the vegetation has changed. Think I did it so that if people end up in the dark green (mapped as white!) it's their own damn fault. Still a lot of really nice forest. I'm sure that more rock would be mapped now, but I'm not sure whether that is progress.

Map is 1:15, features on the map are rather small, but for a 1:15 map it is pretty easy to read. Still might want to bring your magnifier if your eyesight is shaky.

Sorry, no map of my track just yet. :-)

Now have to draw the courses on the maps. Everyone will get a different course, so that in addition to having a mass start, we will also have a mass finish, as long as everyone orienteers the way they usually do. Makes it a lot easier for the organizers, just need to get the time for one person.
