yoga 45:00 [1]
weight:138.5lbs

trail running 57:08 [4] 6.0 mi (9:31 / mi)

13 hills loop. A good steady effort. In addition to gettting my legs used to running, I also need to get used to breathing hard. For the whole run.

Still one day at a time. But there has been a lot of progress this month.

Closing in on Barb....

treadmill 42:57 [3] 5.0 mi (8:35 / mi)

Just putting in a few miles....

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

Before and after, 5%. I really think this helps.

nautilus 35:00 [1]
rhr:51 weight:138.5lbs

Seemed hard, or maybe the room was just a little warm.

treadmill 8:40 [3] 1.0 mi (8:40 / mi)

treadmill 22:17 [4] 3.11 mi (7:10 / mi)

5K tempo run, though this was a little quicker than the last one ad closer to all out. Pulse in the `50s, upper 150s at the end. 7:13, 7:11, 7:06, 47.

Progress, but need to remind myself that this is a little bogus because it is easier on the treadmill.

treadmill 8:42 [3] 1.0 mi (8:42 / mi)

And another mile slower.

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

And the usual 5 minutes before and after, 5%.

Note

Out for movies both nights this weekend. First up was Wendy and Lucy, which Gail didn't care for much and I was sort of luke-warm on, "slim" was the adjective that came to mind, like a book with not too many pages, large print, and wide margins. But it also had a certain appeal and seems like it will stick in my mind for a while.

And then Gomorrah this evening, which I talked Gail into seeing, and which we both enjoyed a lot. Many people gunned down, but felt much less violent (and artificial) than expected. Very interesting.

And, in a reminder that the mind works in mysterious ways, the opening scene -- dark, loud noises, seemed like big machinery was being operated -- flipped back to about 2 am at the rogaine in Estonia where out in the middle of nowhere a guy was running a big logging machine in the middle of the night. A bit unnerving and we were glad to be past him. Did he work for the mob?

Saturday even included a box of popcorn....

Saturday Mar 28, 2009 #

rogaine base building 29:34 [2] 1.55 mi (19:05 / mi)
weight:139lbs

Hiking from the gate up to the top via the power line power climb. 10:30 to the start of the PLPC, 19:04 up. Route. Still some ice, but it was warm so the ice was soft.

trail running 23:47 [3] 2.8 mi (8:30 / mi)

And then ran back down via the race course. Good bit of ice and mud, also quite a few trees down from the ice storm earlier this winter, affected the higher elevations only.

Enjoyed listening to Uwe Reinhardt talk about health care reform.

biking 30:12 [3] 8.42 mi (3:35 / mi)

Took advantage of the good weather (upper 60s, sunny), especially since it is supposed to rain tomorrow, and got out the bike for its inaugural outing in 2009. Just a short ride to check out if things still work (regarding both the bike and me), seemed ok. Very nice out, lots of folks working on their lawns, not us....

No ipod on the bike, can't imagine it's too safe.

Friday Mar 27, 2009 #

trail running 59:54 [3] 6.0 mi (9:59 / mi)
weight:140.5lbs

Same route as Wednesday, even the exact same time. But quite a different run, at least in part.

See, I was going along like usual, struggling a bit but coping, beautiful day, listening to a guy talk about the disappearing glaciers, and then that was over and next was an interview with a couple of members of an Iraqi heavy metal band. And there were a few opening comments and then a selection of their music.

And just at that moment I was heading up a hill, just a modest grade, nothing steep, listening to this "music," and I just totally ran out of energy. Stopped for a minute, then carried on to the top at a slow pace. And then changed to a different program (the AIG mess). And the rest of the run was normal.

I never was a fan of heavy metal. I also never realized how bad it is for you. I wonder if its fans know. If Swampfox was still alive, I'd ask him....

treadmill 23:50 3.0 mi (7:57 / mi)

Included 2 x half-mile (3:20, 3:20), the rest done at 8:35 pace. Legs were tired when I started, so that seemed enough.

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

The usual before and after, 5%.

Wednesday Mar 25, 2009 #

trail running 59:54 [3] 6.0 mi (9:59 / mi)
rhr:54 weight:140.5lbs

My old favorite on Greenfield ridge, the "13 hills" loop. Still some ice in places, but not so much that it makes much of a difference. And certainly not so much that it makes a valid excuse for a slow time. The legs were just feeling slow. On the other hand, another hour of training done. And a beautiful day, good company.

I'd signed up for the lottery for the Mt. Washington race, never done it, thought I might try, but the results came out today and I was not on the list. Not sure if I should be happy or sad....

Note

In celebration of Cristina's birthday, which she is feeling rather down about and quite unappreciated, here is a little known fact about birthdays from the tax laws --

If you were born 1/1/44, when do you turn 65 according to the IRS? And the answer is, it depends. Under one law, for getting the earned income credit, you are eligible if you are under 65 as of 12/31/08, So you are eligible for this. That makes sense. But there is also an extra deduction available if you 65 or older and this is considered to be the case if you turn 65 on 1/1/09. So you are eligible for this too. Which makes no sense at all.

Now, aren't you glad you know that! And I am sure that Cristina, celebrating her 29th (plus 1), is already feeling better too.

trail running 52:01 [3] 5.0 mi (10:24 / mi)

Same as last Friday, Greenfield ridge out to Sachem Head and back. Not much ice left, maybe 10%.

Legs felt heavy but stuck with it. Helped along by three wonderful stories from the This American Life program broadcast on Valentines Day,

treadmill 42:36 [3] 5.0 mi (8:31 / mi)

Cold and windy outside, so just a few relaxed miles on the treadmill with Click and Clack. Time passed quickly, legs felt ok, pulse low 130s, good workout.

Note

Time for a three-month post-surgery report, rather brief....

Things seem to be going well. The only complaint is that my bladder still has a mind of its own when I run, or maybe more accurately, the muscles that are supposed to close things off aren't quite strong enough yet. But the rest of the time there is almost no problem (any "accidents" are very minor). And I do my exercises every day.

The incision points, though still obvious, are all healing well.

My energy level continues to improve. I'd venture to say that I wasn't making an allowance in the first couple of months for the effects of the surgery, and maybe expecting more of myself than warranted under the circumstances.

My mental state continues to be astonishingly good. I find myself in a good mood almost all the time, getting less upset (or not at all) by things that would have bothered me in the past. And, overall, just getting pleasure out of lots of things.

It has never been so easy to "get out the door" for exercise. I think I've missed one day in three months.

I think it can all be summed up by a phrase that was running through my head back in January -- you have a second chance, don't blow it.

Trying not to.

orienteering 17:04 [4] 2.2 km (7:45 / km)
weight:140.5lbs

Clint's WCOC sprints at Crandalls, also a Team fundraiser, thanks Clint.

First sprint -- nice course low down, nice woods, reasonably easy orienteering. Very nice and enjoyable course. Had a good run, no misses of any consequence and ran at a nice pace, moving pretty well but careful enough to keep from doing anything stupid. No falls!

orienteering 17:47 [4] 2.3 km (7:44 / km)

Second sprint. Started up top, lovely terrain, first leg was especially fine. Another good run, except I botched the next to last one, a minute and a quarter, just a mental disconnect, turned a good time into a mediocre one.

Still, such a pleasure to be out running, and running not so bad, and orienteering, and orienteering not so bad. And Gail along for the trip too. And no apparent damage to the body.

trail running 20:00 [1]

Continued my regular warm-up/warm-down routines --

5 minutes walking, 5 minutes jogging before sprint 1.
5 minutes walking immediately on finishing.

After a while, a long uphill walk (15-20 minutes) to the start of sprint 2. Perhaps should have jogged a little there, but felt warm and loose.

And then 5 minutes walking, 5 minutes jogging immediately on finishing sprint 2.

Legs ok.

Note

And then on to the main event of the day, the MoboGoGlobo.

The course.

Too late to get home, so we stopped at the nearby Dunkin Donuts for a place for Gail to hang out and not have to listen to me try to direct Tori Borish around the course.

And we did really good except for, well....

I try to cope with new technology, I really do. But sometimes it still gets the better of me.

The new technology in this case was the plain old simple cell phone.

We were doing great, she was zipping around the course, spiking all of them, until on the windy uphill trail run to #10, she disappeared. Up until then, in addition to lots of talking back and forth, I could hear her breathing (she was definitely putting out a good effort). And then, suddenly, nothing. And when you are doing a MoboGoGlobo and suddenly you have lost cell phone contact, that is not good.

What to do? There was no plan B. There was no consideration of a need for a plan B.

I keep talking a bit. No response. Did she fall? Did her phone get crunched? Or maybe just lost the connection?

After a bit I hung up, tried to call her, got her voice mail. Did that again. Next time the phone rang a couple of times, then nothing, like someone had answered, but no one there. Did that a couple of times.

Morale was plummeting.

Ran into the DD to borrow Gail's phone to call. Same results.

Then my phone makes a funny noise. A text message, second one I've ever gotten. Takes a while to find it, but I do, and it's from Tori says -- I can hear you.

We have by now blown off pretty close to 10 minutes. And now I'm supposed to give directions without knowing where she is.

So I give directions to the next couple simple as I can make them, and then ask her to text me when she gets there. And shut off my phone and wait.

But not long. Because Tori is no dummy. Now she's talking again, and not only that, she's two controls ahead of where I thought she was! Seems at some point someone else came along and she hooked a ride and got back to where the course passed by the start and borrowed a cell phone, and, well, which way is 14?

And we're off again, she spikes the last four controls and finishes strong.

We did ok. Met both goals (didn't finish last, first team from Western Mass.)

And for me, at least, it was really really fun. Would do it again gladly. Thanks, Tori, and thanks also to Patrick for organizing it to raise funds for some promising juniors in the Seattle area to help them come to the Interscholastics at West Point.

nautilus 40:00 [1]
weight:140.5lbs

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

The usual 5 minutes before and after, 5%.

treadmill 8:46 [3] 1.0 mi (8:46 / mi)

And another mile to warm up.

treadmill 12:00 [4] 1.0 mi (12:00 / mi) +528ft 8:00 / mi

And then the hard work, a mile at 10%, 5 mph, pulse about 155. Took a little bit of will power to hang in there. Note: the AP software says this is equivalent to a flat mile in 8:00, but for me right now the latter would be a lot easier.

treadmill 3:24 [3] 0.5 mi (6:48 / mi)

And then a flat half mile easy, was going to be more but this seemed like enough. So 2.5 miles running, 25:10.

Friday Mar 20, 2009 #

trail running 51:58 [3] 5.0 mi (10:24 / mi)
weight:141lbs

First client this morning was a geography professor. In the course of a lot of conversation and a little bit of work he mentioned this web site for older editions of topo maps, A quick look shows it has possibilities, although for my local quad it is missing the 1970s version that is what I would prefer.

And we talked about GPS gizmos, including one you can put on your cat so you know where it goes. I keep wondering if I should get one (a GPS, not a cat).

And we talked about running on the ridge and he said he often runs out to Sachem Head.

So I ran out to Sachem Head a few hours later. Still some ice, mostly ok, I went down once, but very gently. Leg feeling a few twinges just the last couple minutes, but I think it's ok. And entertained the whole time by wonderful stories on This American Life with the general theme of Human Resources.

rogaine base building 5:00 [1] 0.6 mi (8:20 / mi)

Back inside, first warm-up.

treadmill 8:46 [3] 1.0 mi (8:46 / mi)

And some more warm-up.

treadmill 1:50 [4] 0.25 mi (7:20 / mi)

False start -- hit the reset button by mistake....

treadmill 22:47 [4] 3.11 mi (7:20 / mi)

Tempo run, 5K, 8.2 mph, a little quicker than last week. Pulse up to mid 150s I think. Still felt ok, under control, and enjoying it a great deal, felt good to be moving better.

treadmill 8:47 [3] 1.0 mi (8:47 / mi)

And then a slower mile.

rogaine base building 5 [1] 0.6 mi (8 / mi)

And then a last bit of therapeutic walkning, 5%. Helps undo the damage of the running.

Wednesday Mar 18, 2009 #

trail running 33:25 [3] 3.2 mi (10:27 / mi)
weight:141.5lbs

A short outing on Greenfield ridge. Maybe half of it was icy, but the footing was fine. The uphills were another matter. One day at a time. Route.

Tuesday Mar 17, 2009 #

yoga 45:00 [1]
weight:142lbs

road running 46:58 [3] 5.56 mi (8:27 / mi)

From the Body Shoppe, Lovers Lane loop counter-clockwise. Beautiful day, but the hills are still hills, even if they are pretty small. Struggling. One hill at a time, I guess.

Monday Mar 16, 2009 #

treadmill 31:48 4.0 mi (7:57 / mi)
weight:141.5lbs

Back on the treadmill. A slower mile (8:37), then 3 half-miles faster (3:29, 3:29, 3:27) with a slower half-mile (4:15, 4:14, 4:17) after each one. Legs felt tired starting off but seemed to hold up ok.

rogaine base building 20:00 [1] 1.22 mi (16:24 / mi)

Plus 10 minutes before and after, 5%. I think doing this is a good thing.

Sunday Mar 15, 2009 #

trail running 1:00:53 [3] 6.33 mi (9:37 / mi)
weight:141.5lbs

Time for a road trip. Headed south down to the Connecticut coast, the original breeding grounds for Lyme disease, to take a nice run on the trails of Rocky Neck State Park, then a sinful late breakfast in Old Saybrook (blueberry pancakes, eggs, a little sausage, and a little of Gail's blueberry/raspberry french toast), then a little more looking around the coastal communities (including Fenwick) before heading home. Sunny and pleasant, though cooler (mid 40s) at the coast.

Legs were not too spry, but got an hour in anyway, looping around and about the park. The good thing was the legs were tired, but not hurting.

The G is on target. Two weeks ago it was 144 and climbing. This week's goal was 142, next Sunday's is 141. Slow but steady.

Saturday Mar 14, 2009 #

road running 57:13 [3] 6.96 mi (8:13 / mi)
weight:142.5lbs

From the office (route), really long run (everything is relative -- I remember back in college when at times I would do a little running, maybe 15-20 minutes was the usual amount, and once I went for what seemed like forever, all the way out to Fresh Pond in Cambridge, I think it was 45 minutes, seemed really long...).

A little faster than I figured on doing (8:30 pace?), felt like hard work. Don't think I did any damage.

And it sure felt like I would be doing a whole lot of walking if I was out on an O' course (more hills, softer footing).

Friday Mar 13, 2009 #

treadmill 24:00 [3] 2.8 mi (8:34 / mi)
weight:142lbs

Set the treadmill on its hills program, varying between 0 and 7%, just for variety, 7 mph. And trying not to overdo it.

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

5 minutes walking before and after, 5%, therapeutic is the hope.

Thursday Mar 12, 2009 #

rogaine base building 5:00 [1] 0.3 mi (16:40 / mi)

Warm-up, 5%.

treadmill 8:43 [3] 1.0 mi (8:43 / mi)

Then some more warm-up.

treadmill 23:15 [4] 3.1 mi (7:30 / mi)
rhr:51 weight:142lbs

Then set the speed for 8 mph and did a 5K tempo run, flat. Felt remarkably good, pulse about 150, breathing a little more the last mile but not real hard, enjoying CarTalk and all the nuts that call in. Excellent. PR.

treadmill 8:42 [3] 1.0 mi (8:42 / mi)

And then one last mile slower. A lot of sweat, felt really good.

Wednesday Mar 11, 2009 #

treadmill 40:42 [3] 5.0 mi (8:08 / mi)
weight:143lbs

More time on the treadmill. Raining lightly outside and anyway I've gotten more used to the treadmill, especially with something interesting on the ipod, today a Fresh Air interview with with a religious scholar who went from being a devout evangelical when young to an agnostic now. Interesting interview, and she does a good job of asking questions.

Five miles was the plan for today, pace slowing increasing, and five miles with the pace slowly increasing it was. 8:43, 8:12, 8:06, 8:02, and 7:40. Breathing harder on the last one, pulse in the low 150s. Hamstring not too bad, and as a result, I stepped off the treadmill feeling great. Will have to venture out before long.

Weight control program is proceeding. First step was to stop the upward momentum. Done, Now to get a slow decline. I am optimistic.

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

5 minutes walking before and after, 5%.

Tuesday Mar 10, 2009 #

Note

I did a little looking into MoboGoGlobal, which turns out to be the ultimate armchair orienteering, complete with a guinea pig to do all the running around. And that seemed like a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon (east coast time) after enjoying Clint's sprints in the morning.

Made a pledge, recruited a teammate from Western Mass. (Tori Borish). Are we supposed to do any training? The way I figure it, if we do well, that's cool, and if we do badly, well, she just gets a longer workout. And if I need a nap sometime in the middle of the race....

So I think our strategy should be that Tori runs as fast as possible right from the start to try to get them all while I am still awake.

They still need a few more navigators. How about it?

yoga 45:00 [1]

Tuesday morning yoga.

treadmill 34:28 [3] 4.0 mi (8:37 / mi)
weight:143lbs

Not bad outside, but stayed on the treadmill so I could stop if things started to hurt. Ran the 4 miles planned, but hamstring was feeling a little tender. Really wanted to go faster at the end, but figured that wasn't smart. As it was, may have done a bit too much. We'll see tomorrow.

Miles were 9:22, 8:34, 8:34, and 7:58.

rogaine base building 10:00 [1] 0.6 mi (16:40 / mi)

5 minutes walking before and after, 5%.

Monday Mar 9, 2009 #

nautilus 40:00 [1]
weight:142lbs

First time in more than a week. But not so bad.

treadmill 15:00 [2] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +791ft 8:35 / mi

Walking, 15%, pulse about 140. Leg was a little sore yesterday so figured a day off from the super long distance running was called for.

Sunday Mar 8, 2009 #

Note

Saw Gran Torino last night, loved it (as did Gail). One of the previews was for something called Watchman. Looked just dreadful. Although Gail said that both theaters it was playing in were sold out. Guess I'm just out of touch, no surprise there.

Also, slowly working my way through Animal's People. Wonderful, fictional but based on life after the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India. I don't have much time to read, but get through a chapter or two each night before bed.

road running 21:44 [3] 2.57 mi (8:27 / mi)
weight:142.5lbs

The usual struggle to do not very much, in this case the little loop in town. Lovely afternoon, shorts and a t-shirt.

I have to believe that when I finally do some orienteering this spring it's going to be really really slow. Only hope is to get the G down. Still on plan.

Saturday Mar 7, 2009 #

road running 32:14 [3] 3.79 mi (8:30 / mi)
weight:142.5lbs

Side streets in Greenfield (route). Felt slow and a little sore but not so much as to quit. And the ipod died. Well, not permanently, I just need to remember to charge it every once in a while.

Nice day, 50s, shorts. And now that I see the pace, 8:30 is just about what I should be doing.

Friday Mar 6, 2009 #

rogaine base building 14:25 [1] 1.0 mi (14:25 / mi)
weight:142.5lbs

A nice day out but stayed inside so I could quit if I needed to. Warm-up, 5%.

treadmill 26:26 [3] 3.0 mi (8:49 / mi)

Three miles, flat, 9:10, 8:40, 8:36. A little sore, don't know if I should have stopped or not.

Thursday Mar 5, 2009 #

rogaine base building 14:00 [1] 1.0 mi (14:00 / mi)

A nice day out, upper 30s, but figured it was smarter to stay inside since I could stop more easily if the legs acted up. First a mile walking, 5%.

spinning 5:00 [3]

Then a little time on the bike, standing, gets the heart going.

treadmill 17:50 [3] 2.0 mi (8:55 / mi)

Then 2 miles flat, 9:10, 8:40. Legs seemed to survive.

spinning 5:00 [3]

And then back on the bike. Pulse on the treadmill (running) was about 135, about 150 on the bike.

Note
weight:142.5lbs

I do a modest bit of pro bono work, though I suppose yesterday's doesn't really count, since the client arrived with quite a lot of chocolate (about 8 bucks worth) as a substitute payment. And then today one of my favorites stopped by with some carrot cake cupcakes, delicious. I doubt that either offering is good for me. But I figure as long as I eat them before dinner it's ok.

Note

Had what I would assume is one of my smartest clients this evening, a nuclear engineer, these days he works with designing the process of how nuclear plants transport and store (all on site) their nuclear waste, mainly at Vermont Yankee just up the river from us but also consulting around the country. Very interesting conversation. Got the name of a book to read, have to put it on the list.

It took a concerted effort to squeeze in the actual doing of his taxes.

It's the variety of characters I meet that makes this all so interesting. And you can ask them anything.

Wednesday Mar 4, 2009 #

rogaine base building 27:20 [2] 2.0 mi (13:40 / mi)

Maybe a little better today. Wanted to try a little running again, but figured a good warm-up first might be a good idea. So walked a couple of miles, 5%, fast as I could.

spinning 2:00 [2]

Then a slight diversion, got on one of the bikes a tried a little standing up (I'm supposed to phase into riding a bike sitting down....) and that was fine, so now I need to put the bike shoes in the pack.

treadmill 9:27 [3] 1.0 mi (9:27 / mi)

And then managed to run a mile, flat, without having to cut it short because my legs were hurting. Didn't go any further, no point in pushing my luck.

Not sure, but it's possible the flooding was just a little less than usual. I sure was trying.

Note

G starting March 1: 144, 142, 143, 142.5
Sticking to my plan, 4 days with no 6th meal, 86 to go.

Tuesday Mar 3, 2009 #

yoga 45:00 [1]

Usual Tuesday morning class. I don't set an alarm but I seem to wake up at the right time anyway (a little before 6, compared to the usual 6:30, where the "usual" is basically whenever it gets light). Somehow it works.

Decided there was no reason to go to either the Quantico or Cincinnati meets. It's one thing to not be in shape. It's another to not know if you'll be running at all or not.

I'm still wondering what the story is on a couple of issues that were raised regarding the QOC event -- what the club is doing (or has done) with the ~75K it had in the bank, and what a rough budget for the A meet is. I think both are valid questions. The first both for how it got the money (might help other clubs to know) and how it plans to spend it (again, might be instructive), and the second, again, for opening up about what it really costs to run an event. I don't see why both shouldn't gladly be made public.

Back to the treadmill, 5%.

The TV in the locker room was going on about how Rush Limbaugh is now the de facto leader of the GOP. One can only hope. Of course they were doing a pretty good job of self-destructing even without him.

Hamstring still irritated so back to just walking. Corner store and post office loop. PR!

So I made a resolution for March -- given that my training sucks, and even when I can run it is slow, it seems time to at least do something that I have control over, and that is deal with the G.

The resolution is simple, no eating after dinner. We will see if there is any discipline left.

Actually, I started yesterday....

Note

Finally got to see Milk, had been sold out on our two previous attempts. Such a good movie.

Note

Well, made it to March. February, though only 28 days, was a long month, last day not working was the first, 4 weeks ago. More business than I need but I believe the saying is, strike while the iron is hot. And I can't complain, I always thought teachers had it good, 9 months on and 3 off, and I've got the converse. :-)

Been tired though. Too fat, or too many hours, or too old, or lingering effects from the surgery. Actually I think it's the lack of an afternoon nap. Have to figure out a way to get a couch in the office, or at least in the conference room in the back.

And still leaking away whenever I exercise, though the rest of the time is pretty much ok. Just have to keep doing the exercises (which I am) and hope that at some point something clicks.
