Note

The date -- sometime in the mid-80s, quite possibly November, 1985.

The place -- Quantico-land, quite possibly Hop Frog Run, site of the '85 US Relay Champs.

The situation -- another attempt by the NGPC (National Gene Pool Coordinator) to implement his long-range plan for US dominance in orienteering. But this match wasn't to be, not then anyway....

Up to the power line, over to the gate, then cut down to the river and home. Not feelig great but could have been worse.

Still haven't had any snow, which suits me just fine!

Today's extra fine photo --

Which one is the real troll?

Or maybe it's a Photoshpped composite of PG now and PG a long time ago?

Not so bad today. Up to the power line, then over towards the gate, did the bridle loop and then back. Struggling a bit on the uphills, but better energy than yesterday.

AOWN report -- saw one hunter and signs of others (their pickups), but I heard no shots and didn't get nailed myself (even with a bright orange/red shirt on, you never know...). I was very friendly/polite when I passed the hunter; it's not really the time for snide remarks when the other guy is carrying a gun.

Today was a struggle, tired from yesterday, plus hamstring/butt quite sore. It seems I may have to reconsider my plan to beat it into submission.

The plan for today, needing 63+, was over to and up South Sugarloaf and back, but that's only around 47-48 minutes, so a second time up and down would be needed. But the legs didn't like any of that, not the flat first mile, not the very mellow hill on the brudge over the Connecticut River, and certainly not the climb up Sugarloaf (about 450' vertical). They were so unhappy that I even walked for about 75 yards near the top. And the thought of another ascent up the road was not very appealing.

So I changed plans a little. Back down to the bottom and then...

hike 8:01 [3]
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Back up again, as quick as I could, but this time using the very steep trail that goes up the point of the ridge. Still breathing hard, legs still complaining, but psychologically it was a whole lot easier.

And then....

road running 23:28 [2]
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Back down the road and home, at a slow enough pace to make sure I didn't get home too soon. I don't think I really needed to worry about that, as going faster wasn't an option.

And then...

Note

Summoned to 18 holes of O' practice, 36 degrees, NW wind at 10-15 mph, getting quite chilly the last few holes. At least we were walking quickly.

road running 1:02:35 [3] 8.0 mi (7:49 / mi)
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

No way I would have gone out today under usual circumstances -- rolled my right ankle yesterday and it was feeling a little iffy, a very dreary afternoon, and generally sore. But the ramp required it. And something was needed to counterbalance some excellent (and excessive) eating chez Rhonda. (Also saw a couple of movies there, Lone Star, a wonderful John Sayles movie, third time I'd seen it, and He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, which was, well, the others liked it a lot while I retreated to another room halfway through, my only regret being that I hung in there so long....)

I figured it was better for the ankle to stay on the pavement, so I headed up towards Montague on a loop that is 8 miles (at some point Phil will measure it and he'll get something between 7.98 and 8.02), first 2 and last 2 flat, middle 4 with some hills, thinking maybe 64 minutes. Did the first mile in 8:25, did a little quick math, and figured I better pick up the pace or I'd be out 67-68 minutes, and that would have very bad implications for the following day(s). So I worked pretty hard the rest of the way, about 7:45 pace, shouldn't be hard work but actually I was reasonably pleased, couldn't have done that a couple weeks ago. A bit sore towards the end (butt), but ankle felt ok.

I don't think the ramp has too many planks left....

At Charlie's still, a busy Xmas day, first over to Litchfield for a visit with mom, then a run, now off to try to keep up with Charlie on a hike for a couple of hours.

Run was down the Devil's Elbow and most of the way down Ratlum Road (19:04), then south on the Tunxis Trail (like yeasterday, though a couple minutes faster to where I turned around yesterday), but continued out to where it came out on the road (51:40), except I got lost a bit and wandered around some, then the long slog up Doyle Road. Fortunately I took Charlie's advice and was happy to terminate the run before I got back to their house -- about halfway back up Doyle Road I decided I had run out of gas, and also had run long enough (i.e. more than yesterday's 58 minutes). So I stopped running, and stopped the watch, and had a pleasant stroll the rest of the way back.

The ramp continues (more colorful, too), but probably not for much longer....

Note

And another hour and three-quaters brisk hike with Charlie, oh am I tired now....

Hamstring pretty sore. Had thought about running with George and Lyn on our way to Charlie and Rhonda's but couldn't quite get my act together, but I did manage to get out at Charlie's, out and back on the Tunxis Trail.

Turned out to be a good run. Hamstring mellowed out. Went from Ratlum Road to SW to town line, not marked but the trail headed sharply downhill, then back to the car, but not quite enough time elapsed so went the other way a couple of minutes and back. Trail was perpetually up and down, steep in places, but never for too long at one time, so a good hill interval workout without having to think about it. Got myself up all the hills without walking/croaking, actually a glimmer or two of having a little strentgh, so that was a nice surprise. Just got to keep at it and at some point progress will come.

Got back to their house and Charlie was all set to go off for a briisk hike, so off we went for an hour and three-quarters. Can't log that because it would screw up my ramp....

road running race 21:23 [4] 3.1 mi (6:54 / mi)
weight:138lbs shoes: Air Max Trail 12/06

5K race in Forest Park in Spring, one of a number of times over the years I've run a race that I wasn't prepared for just to see how bad my conditioning was. Almost a minute slower than last year at this time. Just confirms that work needs to be done. Martula got me by a couple of seconds, Clint was maybe 30 secods ahead, George and Lyn about a minute behind. Also just a few seconds ahead of Roland Cormier (age 66 now), good runner, occasional orienteer many years ago. The primary reason for doing these races is for the training, but there's a nice social component too.

Mid 40s, drizzle, decent running conditions, no distractions from nature. Well, there were potential distractions, we went right by the duck pond, but if yu're focused you don't notice anything.

road running 34:42 [3]

Warm-up (14:26), and then enough warm-down (20:16, part on the XC course) to keep the ramp intact, 56:05 for the day.

Note

2006 was a year when some people seemed unnaturally concerned about their weight, all started when Mr. Swampfox discovered the G. It is still too early to tell if the G has brought more good or evil -- measured by such criteria as self-esteem soaring or plummeting, relationships formed or destroyed, training ramped up or suspended altogether -- but it is clear that more time was spent on the scales.

Which therefore raises the question -- just who is this fine specimin, almost entirely at one with nature? And who took the photo?

Note

Today we feature the USA women's team to WOC-85, or at least 80% of it, as Heather Williams apparently decided she wanted nothing to do with this crew. From left, Peggy Dickison, Linda Kohn, Kris Beecroft, and Sharon Crawford.

And what is the deal with Sharon? Does being in the southern hemisphere bring out strange behavior? Not that anyone ever accused Sharon of being normal....

For the other three, they're at least 20% at one with nature.

trail running 53:41 [3] 6.03 mi (8:54 / mi)

A very fine run with Phil as we both kept the testosterone displays under control. Perhaps because he had his new toy, a Forerunner of some sort that measured how far we were going. So I would guess the length of each segment and then he would tell me how close I was (which was pretty close most of the time, the basic Suger-Gunn loop that I've considered to be 5.5 miles measured 5.53). Of course, we had to add another little half-mile loop at the far end to keep my ramp going in the right direction. (And very nice of him not too insist on 60 or 70 minutes and make my ramp much steeper than desired.)

The only disappointing part of the run came when, as part of my new AOWN program, I stopped to point out a flock of maybe a dozen turkeys, and Phil's response was to mutter something about how this 10 seconds was messing up our time. He clearly has some work to do here to get with the IOF program.

Note -- as I write this, 3 gunshots just went off, and not that far away. Someone else doing there own version of AOWN.

In hope of bringing a little holiday cheer, here is the first of a few photos dug out of the archives.

Today features the USA men's team to WOC-85 in Australia as they get ready for battle, from left -- Mikell Platt (Swampfox), Eric Weyman (EricW), Bruce Wolfe, Dan Meenehan (Snorkel), and Carl Childs.

And yes, the photo of the women's team is coming soon.

Past the Town Park and up Middle Mt. to the power line, back down along it to North Mt. and then home. Not awful.

Amused myself much of the time (i.e. took my mind off the running) either by thoughts of my next O' practice trip, or thoughts of upcoming archival photos to be posted.

Not looking forward to tomorrow's run with Phil, as I am sure he will try to take advantage of my current weakened state and push the pace. Saturday's 5K in Springfield should be pleasant by comparison.

Gunn-Sugar loop on Mt. Toby. Quads sore but not bad, various other aches but not too bad. Continuing my streak of running more each day until I break....

A dusting of snow overnight made things white, but it's already mostly gone, and it's such a fine day that I've been summoned to 9 holes of O' practice this afternoon. Will have to dress warmly.

Retired a pair of Nike Pegasus shoes, upper was trashed. Got about 110 hours out of them. Also have a pair of Nike Air Max trail shoes that are about to be retired, also about 110 of use and upper is going. Got a new pair of them at an Nike outlet in Myrtle Beach, $50, baptised them today.

With Dave, up South Sugarloaf and back, struggling, couldn't keep up with him going up the hill. When you take time off at this age, you lose a lot of conditioning and it takes a while to get back. Over to the hill in 15:43, up in 9:19, back in 22:54.

Legs felt preety feeble, quads a little sore and tired, but nothing of great concern. Just got to take it one day at a time.

AOWN report -- didn't see it, but heard a raven croaking while we were going up the mountain. They nest in the cliffs on the SE side in the summertime.

Up to Gunn, over through Gunn Farm to the river and back along Falls Road. Can tell from the way my muscles feeling that I haven't been doing much running. But just need to take it day by day.

In tune with the IOF's "At One With Nature" motto (whatever the hell that means, "Out To Lunch" would be more appropriate), I will try to include with my training entries somethig about nature.

Yesterday's report, therefore, should be amended to include the fact that I disturbed 4 turkeys from their treetop roosts, where they thought that they could peacefully spend the night at one with nature, until some damn orienteer came along and scared the shit out of them.

Today's nature report, particularly relevant since we have recently been visiting a very highly ranked gardener, is that our forsythia bush has bloomed, or at least one branch of it has bloomed. Now mid-December is not the normal time for this, and with colder weather on the way Gail did the only sensible thing and lopped if off. So we now have a nice yellow decoration for the dining room table.

Scaring birds, chopping up bushes, I am truly AOWN.

Back home, up to the power line (17:56) and back (14:50), it was getting pretty dark in the hemlocks on the way back. Breathing somewhat hard and a slow time shows what sort of shape I'm in. Lots of work to do, just hope the legs allow it.

road running 25:03 [2] 2.73 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

In Stafford, running the route of champions, in the dark, almost sprained an ankle, got more hills than expected, also more distance, but, hey, I'm running again and I feel great.

An unofficial reading of the holiday-stuffed, el fatso G, meaning wrong scale and wrong time of day, is 139. And that's before sitting down to dinner (and dessert), yum....

The plan was to keep it at no more than 140 for the usual November/December build-up, giving a starting point for the 2007 cycle of 4 or 5 pounds less than for 2006. But Xmas and New Year's gorging may force that plan to be revised...

Training is really picking up! Hamstring/butt still sore, and probably will be for a long time, but left calf seemed ok, though I wasn't stressing it much.

Now in Prince George,VA, the O' tour is almost over, sadly.

Tried a little running in Cordele, left calf still not right, nor is left hamstring/butt. Was hoping for some progress, all I seem to be doing is getting rapidly out of shape.
