trail running 36:16 [3] 3.5 mi (10:22 / mi)
ahr:142 max:158

Snowmobile trails in Conway south of 116. Still too soft to be anything other than just hard work.

Friday Jan 30, 2004 #

spinning 50:00 [2]

Thursday Jan 29, 2004 #

road running 1:19:45 [3] 9.6 mi (8:18 / mi)
ahr:142 max:155

To Montague and back, moderate effort. Mostly snow-packed, traction ranged from ok to lousy. Windy, low 20s, felt balmy.

Wednesday Jan 28, 2004 #

spinning 40:00 [2]

Tuesday Jan 27, 2004 #

trail running 1:13:20 [3] 8.2 mi (8:57 / mi)
ahr:144 max:166

Race course to the gate and back, good effort.

Monday Jan 26, 2004 #

trail running 45:40 [3] 5.0 mi (9:08 / mi)
ahr:142 max:158

Up to the power line, plus a little loop there. Wasn't planning on running today (sore and tired from yesterday), but I had time and snow is coming. Felt ok once I got going.

Sunday Jan 25, 2004 #

part trail, part road 1:59:23 [3] 13.5 mi (8:51 / mi)
ahr:145 max:158

With Phil and Maddy from Phil's house in Northampton, into the hills west of town. Steady pace, mostly ok but legs fading the last 15 minutes. Sunny and about 10 degrees, but not much wind.

Saturday Jan 24, 2004 #

trail running 31:06 [3] 3.5 mi (8:53 / mi)
ahr:143 max:158

Up to the power line and back, ran hard on the way back. Lows teens and windy, but a lot more fun in the woods than out on the roads.

spinning 44:00 [2]

Thursday Jan 22, 2004 #

trail running 1:37:17 [3] 10.5 mi (9:16 / mi)
ahr:145 max:165

Around Mt. Toby (and almost to the top) - powerline, gate, hairpin, S curves, Middle Mt., Muck, and back. Pretty well packed out for the most part even though I was still slipping some. Good effort for one of my longest outings in a while.

Wednesday Jan 21, 2004 #

road running 35:15 [3] 4.3 mi (8:12 / mi)
ahr:141 max:160

With Dave in Montague. Relaxed at first, a little more energetic at the end.

Tuesday Jan 20, 2004 #

trail running 56:43 [3] 5.5 mi (10:19 / mi)
ahr:143 max:159

Checking out a snowmobile trail in the Deerfield/Conway hills. Hard going - some good hills and soft underfoot, had to walk a couple of times. Amused myself by mapping the trail (mentally) as I went along. Strong NW winds, but nicely shelted for the most part and only felt it on the farthest bit up on top of the ridge.

Monday Jan 19, 2004 #

trail running 1:00:21 [3] 6.5 mi (9:17 / mi)
ahr:140 max:156

Up to the power line, then over to the sugar house and back. Legs not too bad. High teens and windy, but very nice in the woods.

Sunday Jan 18, 2004 #

trail running 1:27:20 [3] 9.0 mi (9:42 / mi)
ahr:138 max:158

With Phil, over to the gate, down to the river, and back via Gunn Mt. Farm. Pretty good footing. Very pleasant out, turkey sightings outnumbered people sightings by about 12 to 1.

Saturday Jan 17, 2004 #

trail running 34:15 [2] 3.5 mi (9:47 / mi)
ahr:136 max:152

Up to the power line and back, relaxed pace, legs feeling fragile as usual but not too bad. Beautiful day, mid-20s.

Thursday Jan 15, 2004 #

trail running 37:38 [2] 3.5 mi (10:45 / mi)

Up to the power line and back, gently. An inch of new snow to cover up the icy spots. 4 degrees and windy, but the sun was out so it seemed pleasant. Hamstring complaining some.

Wednesday Jan 14, 2004 #

hike 52:25 [1] 3.5 mi (14:59 / mi)

Up to the power line and back, to loosen up the muscles. 3 degrees, windy, got a little cold coming back down.

Monday Jan 12, 2004 #

spinning 20:00 [2]

treadmill 11:00 [2]

Right hamstring went bad all of a sudden, quit....

Sunday Jan 11, 2004 #

road running 1:17:56 [3] 10.0 mi (7:48 / mi)
ahr:155 max:166

Sugarloaf fun run with Phil, Jim Plaza, Maddy, and Sue Dean. Did the 10-mile course. Good effort, struggling to keep up at times, hung in there pretty well on the last long hill. About 5 degrees, had lots on.

road running 10:28 [2] 1.2 mi (8:43 / mi)

Getting to the start and back from the finish from the Amherst Women's Club, where we were having the club's annual meeting.

Saturday Jan 10, 2004 #

trail running 47:28 [3] 5.0 mi (9:30 / mi)
ahr:147 max:164

Up to the power line, then a short loop up the power line and back Middel Mt. and Muck, then back. Good conditions, firm where there had been some traffic, some softness otherwise. Cold (8 degrees) but sunny and not much wind, so pretty pleasant actually.

Friday Jan 9, 2004 #

spinning 54:30 [2]
ahr:135 max:161

Iincludes about 10 minutes warm-up and 10 cool-down.

Thursday Jan 8, 2004 #

road running 51:42 [3] 6.5 mi (7:57 / mi)
ahr:153 max:166

Back roads in Montague. Cold day, mid-teens and a steady NW wind. Calf muscles have been doing better since I put some heel cushions in my shoes.
Got a cheap heart monitor yesterday. I used one a bunch 10-15 years ago. I gives some good feedback, plus sometimes it's just nice to have along for entertainment, similar to the way I used to carry topo maps at trail ultras. Gives you something else to think about.

Wednesday Jan 7, 2004 #

spinning 21:00 [2]

Just wanted to do a little before my next group session (Friday evenings).

treadmill 20:00 [3] 2.65 mi (7:33 / mi)

Tuesday Jan 6, 2004 #

road running 35:16 [3] 4.3 mi (8:12 / mi)

Hilly back roads in Montague with Dave. He pushed the pace a bit and my legs felt not too bad. Saw just three cars, easy to forget how nice that is until you have to run in traffic.

Monday Jan 5, 2004 #

hike 56:22 [1] 3.5 mi (16:06 / mi)

Up to the power line and back, an inch or two of sleet/sluch overnight. Trying to keep getting a little exercise while taking it easy on my calf. Not easy.

Note

Candidate #5 for my top ten list is posted.

Sunday Jan 4, 2004 #

hike 1:04:45 [1]

Just up the mountain a ways, mix of snow/ice/mud.

Friday Jan 2, 2004 #

spinning 51:00 [3]

Tried a spinning class just for the hell of it. Lots of music and a room of co-sufferers made it almost tolerable.

Thursday Jan 1, 2004 #

biking 55:15 [3] 15.3 mi (3:37 / mi)

Need to try to let the calf get better, but the weather was nice enough (40 degrees, not too windy, dry roads) so I got out the bike for the first time in 3 months. Lots of clothes but various appendages still got cold, and my rear end made it quite clear that it had lost its adaptation to the saddle, but nevertheless a good outing. Certainly better than doing nothing.
