Wednesday Dec 31, 2003 #

road running 34:43 [3] 4.5 mi (7:43 / mi)

Town line and back, calf not good.

Tuesday Dec 30, 2003 #

road running 34:57 [3] 4.3 mi (8:08 / mi)

Back roads in Montague with Dave. Didn't have much zip, especially going up the hills, but a decent effort anyway. Still unseasonably warm weather, snow is slowly disappearing.

Monday Dec 29, 2003 #

road running 34:05 [3] 4.5 mi (7:34 / mi)

Along the river out to the town line and back, good effort. Leg still sore, just not quite so bad.

Sunday Dec 28, 2003 #

road running 12:35 [2]

Calf still tender, just taking it easy.

Saturday Dec 27, 2003 #

road running 9:40 [2]

Left calf hurt pretty good after Wednesday's slipping and sliding. Pretty frustrating. Took walks the last couple of days while visiting the DeWeese's for Xmas and packing on the pounds. Just trying a little today.

Wednesday Dec 24, 2003 #

trail running 59:12 [4] 6.0 mi (9:52 / mi)

Snowmobile trails in Conway with Phil. Rain and warm weather made them pretty awful, best parts were the ice (we both had spikes on). Left calf bad the last 20-25 minutes, other than that a good run, and certainly good training. But calf is really hurting.

Tuesday Dec 23, 2003 #

trail running 43:42 [3] 4.8 mi (9:06 / mi)

Main snowmobile trail in Conway, this time going north from Rt. 116 over to and a little past Bardswell Ferry Road. A couple of nice hills, a stretch along the South River. Warmer than yesterday, broke through a couple of times when crossing wet areas, but still a real pleasure. Surprise of the day - seeing a "Howard Dean for President" sign along the trail.

Monday Dec 22, 2003 #

trail running 51:17 [3] 5.5 mi (9:19 / mi)

On snowmobile trails in the Conway hills, really good (thanks to a tip from Walter, who has been mountain biking on them at night!), probably perfect conditions about 75 percent of the time, a little glazed but still ok 20%, and icy the last 5%. Had decent energy. A very fine outing.

Sunday Dec 21, 2003 #

road running 1:03:20 [3] 7.9 mi (8:01 / mi)

From East Leverett, up past Atkins Reservoir, up Pratt's Corner Road, back down Shutesbury Road. Decent effort going up, then just trying to run gently on the two and a half miles coming down. Uneventful.

Saturday Dec 20, 2003 #

road running 33:57 [3] 4.3 mi (7:54 / mi)

Loop around town, normal effort, legs not too bad.

Friday Dec 19, 2003 #

road running 34:02 [3] 4.5 mi (7:34 / mi)

Along the river, good effort, felt ok except left calf acting up again just at the end (it had been improving slowing). Got to keep working on it.
On the home front, we got robbed again! But this time the only losses were the bird feeders - the seed one busted apart, the two suet ones gone, one later found empty about 50 yards away. Prime suspect is a bear having a last bit of dessert before settling in for the winter.

Thursday Dec 18, 2003 #

road running 37:05 [3] 4.3 mi (8:37 / mi)

Back roads in Montague with Dave. Relaxed pace, uneventful.

Note

Candidate #4 for my top ten list is posted.

Wednesday Dec 17, 2003 #

road running 45:38 [3] 5.8 mi (7:52 / mi)

Book mill loop in Montague. Some ice and slush, but mostly just wet pavement. Seemed like hard work. Rain and 34 degrees, good character builder....

Tuesday Dec 16, 2003 #

road running 36:35 [3] 4.5 mi (8:08 / mi)

Along the river and back with Dave, flat and easy.

Monday Dec 15, 2003 #

road running 37:06 [3] 4.3 mi (8:38 / mi)

Hilly back roads in Montague, snowpacked and a bit slippery after last night's storm. Took it easy, a little tired and sore from yesterday.

Note

The third of the candidates for my top ten list is at http://users.crocker.com/~pg/index.html
I'm finding I'm enjoying the process, and thinking about long-past races is a nice way to pass the time when running, and a bit of motivation as well.

Sunday Dec 14, 2003 #

trail running 1:28:40 [3] 9.0 mi (9:51 / mi)

With Phil and Jeff Saeger on Mt. Toby. Trails were bits of bare ground, bits of snow, and a lot of ice, just enough traction when going uphill. Going down was another matter, with Jeff and I (both spikeless) often favoring the adjoining forest and its good footing in a couple of inches of old snow. Energy was decent, left calf not too bad as some Advil clearly helped. Overall, a lot of fun and good company. And some fine pancakes afterwards, the last of which Gail put away when she came in from her run.

Saturday Dec 13, 2003 #

road running 33:55 [3] 4.3 mi (7:53 / mi)

Flat loop in Sunderland. Felt a little more energy (meaning that the same pace as a week ago seem like less effort), but left calf complaining quite a lot.

Friday Dec 12, 2003 #

road running 44:47 [3] 5.8 mi (7:43 / mi)

Book Mill loop in Montague, good effort.

Thursday Dec 11, 2003 #

road running 35:34 [3] 4.5 mi (7:54 / mi)

With Dave, along the river just before dark, also very foggy. A little faster than I had expected since he had to be elsewhere shortly afterwards. Calves felt not so good to start, but then settled in to just a mild ache.

Wednesday Dec 10, 2003 #

road running 53:17 [3] 6.8 mi (7:50 / mi)

Two-silo loop up along the river. Been a while since I've been this way and one of the silos seems to be missing its top, so I guess it should be the 1.75 silos loop. Had a bald eagle fly over nice and low and while i was admiring it, a pileated woodpecker flew arcoss and landed on a tree right in front of me. Rather cool... Decent effort, but right calf complaining at the end.

Tuesday Dec 9, 2003 #

road running 34:34 [3] 4.3 mi (8:02 / mi)

Flat loop in Sunderland, relaxed pace, legs a little better.

Monday Dec 8, 2003 #

road running 35:19 [3] 4.3 mi (8:13 / mi)

Back roads in Montague, more pavement showing. Calf muscles still sore, but not as much as yesterday. Beautiful day, sunny, low 30s.

Sunday Dec 7, 2003 #

road running 47:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:33 / mi)

Back roads in Montague, snow-covered after a foot of snow yesterday. A couple of walkers, a few shovelers, maybe three cars, couldn't have been nicer. If only my calf muscles would behave....

Friday Dec 5, 2003 #

road running 33:40 [3] 4.3 mi (7:50 / mi)

Flat loop around greater Sunderland. Calf muscles still complaining on a seemingly random basis, but I'm doing my best to just ignore them.

Thursday Dec 4, 2003 #

trail running 53:31 [3] 5.5 mi (9:44 / mi)

Phil's loop at Mt. Tom, up Teabag down Keystone. Felt tired, ran all the way up Teabag but had to walk a little going up Goat Peak and a lot going up Whiting.

Wednesday Dec 3, 2003 #

track 13:31 [5] 2.0 mi (6:45 / mi)

First time to the track in ages. Just felt a desire to see how bad my fitness is, and the track doesn't let you duck the truth. 13:31 for 2 miles (6:43, 6:48), glad I wasn't trying to go farther -- actually I'd planned on doing two and it took a bit of will power to keep going after one.
PR for the distance is 10:58 about 20 years ago, although I think I could have done better the spring of '89 when a friend and I were training to try and break 5 minutes for the mile. I ran a 5:02 and then a 5:01 and then it was off to Europe for orienteering not much later (and one of my best sets of results over there ever). But I never thought to give the 2 mile a try.

track 15:42 [3] 2.0 mi (7:51 / mi)

Warm-up, warm-down. Temp was in the mid 20's with a moderate NW wind, ran in full winter gear. At the new track at Eagle Brook School, had it all to myself as you might expect.

Tuesday Dec 2, 2003 #

Note

Legs a little sore from yesterday. Was planning on running with Dave but when I got home about noon (I'd been in Greenfield all morning and Gail was gone for the day), the front door was open (and quite a bit damaged from the forced entry) and the TV and VCR were gone. Spent the rest of the day dealing with police, insurance, a crime scene investigator, a carpenter.... All that was taken was a 15-year-old tube and a $98 VCR, but it sure is a pain. At least they didn't take my maps!

Monday Dec 1, 2003 #

road running 1:05:40 [3] 8.4 mi (7:49 / mi)

Deer season starts today, so it's either roads or driving to a couple of places that ban hunting, or just running in the usual places and taking your chances.... Opted for loop around Sugarloafs. Pavement felt hard.
