mountain biking 57:19 intensity: (8 @1) + (11:46 @2) + (36:47 @3) + (7:13 @4) + (1:25 @5) 6.81 mi (8:25 / mi) +739ft 7:38 / mi
ahr:140 max:164 weight:141lbs

Pocumtuck Ridge, to Pine Nook Road (where it turns paved) and back. Nice ride, rained hard for a few minutes just as I turned around but didn't really matter, though when I heard thunder I was less happy. But it never materialized.

Made it up all the ups, though it was close a couple of times. And didn't seem quite so rooty as before, or maybe I'm just trying a little harder to weave my way between them.

I think in wet conditions the mountain bike is a better option.

biking - red bike 1:18:52 intensity: (57 @1) + (27:05 @2) + (46:34 @3) + (4:16 @4) 20.14 mi (3:55 / mi) +540ft 3:49 / mi
ahr:133 max:159 weight:141lbs

Up the east side of the river to the rail trail bridge, back on River Road. Very tired after yesterday's ride, but not so bad once I got going. Lots of bikers out.

biking - red bike 1:31:52 intensity: (1:04 @1) + (47:23 @2) + (43:25 @3) 22.21 mi (4:08 / mi) +953ft 3:58 / mi
ahr:128 max:150 weight:141lbs

Warm and sunny afternoon. Up the river to check if the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks in Montague is finished -- it's not -- then back via Cave Hill and Leverett. Pretty nice ride. Best part was catching a fellow part way up Cave Hill and chatting the rest of the way, made it seem like suddenly we were at the top without much effort.

But then maybe we were just going slowly.

mountain biking 49:52 intensity: (57 @1) + (12:32 @2) + (18:21 @3) + (13:44 @4) + (4:18 @5) 6.27 mi (7:57 / mi) +802ft 7:06 / mi
ahr:141 max:169 weight:142lbs

On Mt. Toby again, this time up South Mt., back via North Mt. And then even did a bit of cleaning of the chain when I got back, very much needed (and does the rest of the bike).

5 PM

mountain biking 58:51 intensity: (18 @1) + (25:39 @2) + (28:48 @3) + (4:06 @4) 4.01 mi (14:41 / mi) +365ft 13:31 / mi
ahr:134 max:156

Well, I had such a good time in early afternoon on Mt. Toby -- which I decided to do as a substitute for joining the local O' gang at Earl's Trails -- that I changed my mind and headed off to Earl's Trails anyway. Not to orienteer, but for the expected dinner afterwards. And took my bike to venture out on the trails.

Which was OK, except I didn't heed my own advice, which was to stay on the big trails and off the little winding ones. Because they have been mostly too hard for me in the past.

Funny enough they still are. Lots of places with short but steep ups or downs, with lots of roots and sharp corners and narrow corridors through the trees. Got to be a lot better biker than I am. I figure I got off the bike a dozen times voluntarily and a couple more times that weren't planned. Could have done without the latter, though I don't think any serious damage was done. And perhaps I've learned my lesson.

But the dinner company was excellent -- George and Lyn, Ken, Charlie, Steve R, and Phil. Nice to catch up a bit.

mountain biking 1:16:17 intensity: (1:14 @1) + (18:05 @2) + (45:29 @3) + (11:04 @4) + (25 @5) 9.18 mi (8:19 / mi) +1121ft 7:27 / mi
ahr:137 max:163 weight:143lbs

Mid-50s, light rain, same route as yesterday (N Mt., Sugar to gate, down to river, up Gunn, down N. Mt.). A little less chicken on the steeper descents but still being very careful. Another fine outing.

mountain biking 1:20:43 intensity: (1:32 @1) + (37:39 @2) + (38:57 @3) + (2:35 @4) 9.16 mi (8:49 / mi) +1078ft 7:56 / mi
ahr:130 max:159 weight:143lbs

Out on the mountain bike between bouts of rain (the road bike is getting a little maintenance done). Everything was wet but not too much mud. Had a great time.

Changed things so I now have just flat pedals and it's much better, don't have to worry about getting the feet out, or back in. I think it makes it much safer, plus I was just being careful, especially on the rocky downhills. The only other thing I need to do is get a different rear tire, one with better traction. The current one slips (going up and down) too easily.

Quite a bit of mud on me by the time I was done. :-)

------------

Spent the last four days in Austin, funeral for my sister-in-law's mom. Good trip.

ahr:128 max:153 weight:142lbs

South Deerfield and Whately. Upper 50s, N 5 mph. Seemed like harder work than it should have, but some days are like that.

Wednesday Apr 19, 2017 #

8 AM

biking - red bike 1:35:16 intensity: (54 @1) + (59:59 @2) + (34:23 @3) 22.89 mi (4:10 / mi) +870ft 4:01 / mi
ahr:127 max:148 weight:142lbs

Low 50s, S 15-20, overcast, so back in the tights and a couple of extra shirts. Meandered through the hills over to Amherst, then back on the flats. Relaxed pace, made it much more pleasant. One section of dirt road for about a mile and a half, mostly fine but could have happily done without the couple of sections of loose gravel.

ahr:131 max:155 weight:142.5lbs

Leverett loop plus a little more added on in Montague. OK ride except I was cussing the wind a few times. Maybe I just shouldn't look at the forecast, that way I would have no expectations.

Monday Apr 17, 2017 #

9 AM

biking - red bike 1:47:17 intensity: (1:23 @1) + (18:42 @2) + (1:22:19 @3) + (4:53 @4) 28.15 mi (3:49 / mi) +881ft 3:42 / mi
ahr:138 max:155 weight:142lbs

From Bernardston north not quite to Brattleboro, up on 142 and back on 5. Took a bit of a shortcut to check out Broad Branch Road. It was dirt but not bad, and I've decided that there's no reason to avoid dirt roads. So a pleasant little exploration.

Went relatively early since the wind was supposed to increase as the day went on. Already pretty breezy, supposedly from the WNW. Most hurting on the first half, mostly helping on the second, definitely helping on the last couple of miles.

biking - red bike 1:21:06 intensity: (5:43 @1) + (33:25 @2) + (38:39 @3) + (3:19 @4) 17.19 mi (4:43 / mi) +1283ft 4:24 / mi
ahr:126 max:154 weight:143lbs

With Walter and Dusty from Walter's place in Conway. Chatting the whole time so should have felt easy, but the hills are still hills and I haven't ridden many of them this year (not that I could ever get up them very well). But good company and a very pleasant ride.

biking - red bike 42:24 intensity: (45 @1) + (31:38 @2) + (10:01 @3) 11.13 mi (3:49 / mi) +70ft 3:47 / mi
ahr:127 max:145 weight:142.5lbs

Mid 60s, S 10-15 mph. Sure was faster when I turned the corner and started heading back north.

-----------

I notice on yesterday's route that there is a feature I hadn't noticed before giving an option to show your splits on the climbs -- in the upper left, the drop down box that used to give you the choice of various distance from every .25 km to every 10 miles, now gives options for splits based on the hills. Very nice!

ahr:127 max:148

Up into the hills -- Conway, Bardwell Ferry bridge, back via Upper Road. Thought I did a good job of pacing myself, but still pretty wasted by the end.

Lovely day though, and still good to be out, and going a few places I hadn't been for a while. Glad I had my lowest gear.

ahr:135 max:156 weight:143lbs

Leverett loop, counter-clockwise. Upper 50s, NW 10-15 mph. Worked harder than I intended/expected, perhaps because I was a little chilly at the outset. At least a somewhat satisfying outing.

Wednesday Apr 12, 2017 #

5 PM

biking - red bike 54:04 intensity: (1:07 @1) + (42:48 @2) + (10:09 @3) 13.56 mi (3:59 / mi) +388ft 3:53 / mi
ahr:123 max:148 weight:142lbs

Low 60s, NW 5-10 mph. Legs were really tired yesterday evening and this morning, but by the time the rain cleared out and things dried up it was not so bad. Maybe helps to have really low expectations. The easy pace meant the legs actually felt fine.

Got a new helmet, some bright shade of orange, stunning of course. Never got to test the structural integrity of the last one, and I hope the same is true for this one.

biking - red bike 1:07:14 intensity: (1:07 @1) + (26:39 @2) + (39:18 @3) + (10 @4) 17.01 mi (3:57 / mi) +370ft 3:52 / mi
ahr:130 max:152 weight:143lbs

Getting to be downright hot, mid-80s, SE 10-15 mph. Not much zip, expect the warm temps had something to do with that.

5 PM

orienteering 1:06:55 intensity: (5:55 @1) + (52:11 @2) + (8:49 @3) 3.01 mi (22:15 / mi) +389ft 19:49 / mi
ahr:118 max:139

The first of Phil's training series, at Earl's Trails. 4.4 km orange course. Feeling old and frail. But nice dinner together afterwards.

Just wanted to see if trying to do the Billygoat makes any sense. Not a clear answer.

biking - red bike 42:15 intensity: (47 @1) + (33:14 @2) + (8:14 @3) 11.14 mi (3:48 / mi) +73ft 3:46 / mi
ahr:126 max:139 weight:143lbs

Upper 70s, S 15-20 mph. Took only about a minute out in the (head)wind to change from my planned route to one that minimizes the headwinds and maximizes the tailwinds, and what's not to like about that. A much better choice than getting pissed. And even took the last mile easy, which I should do all the time but almost never do.

biking - red bike 1:34:37 intensity: (43 @1) + (34:53 @2) + (56:48 @3) + (1:59 @4) + (14 @5) 24.18 mi (3:55 / mi) +751ft 3:48 / mi
ahr:132 max:162 weight:144lbs

Spring seems to be here, at least for a little while. Mid-60s, W 5-10. First time out in just shorts for several months. Lots of people out riding and running, burgers were on the grill in a couple of spots, a couple of cars went by with their tops down.

Went by the Franklin County Fairgrounds and its 1/2-mile dirt track. Brought back memories of running in a 24-hour relay there. I think I had the 4-6 am shift. Will have to see if I can look it up.

biking - red bike 48:34 intensity: (46 @1) + (19:37 @2) + (26:53 @3) + (1:18 @4) 12.16 mi (4:00 / mi) +207ft 3:56 / mi
ahr:130 max:158 weight:143lbs shoes: red bike tires #2

Two new tires, one new tube. Had 3,776 on the old set in not quite 11 months, so I figure I got my money's worth.

Upper 40s, WNW 15 mph. Another day with a lot more wind than I care for, but managed to get out for at least a short ride, up the river and back (ie. mostly flat).

Looks like in a couple of days I'll be complaining about it being too hot. :-)

Windy for this guy too --

Friday Apr 7, 2017 #

biking - red bike 45:33 intensity: (35 @1) + (3:57 @2) + (26:26 @3) + (13:39 @4) + (56 @5) 11.3 mi (4:02 / mi) +629ft 3:50 / mi
ahr:145 max:163 weight:143lbs

Leverett loop clockwise, except I didn't finish, got a flat rear tire right at the town line on Bull Hill Road. Must be something in the rear tire causing a problem, thought I checked it pretty good when it got a flat a little bit ago, but I guess not. Time for new tires.

And as far as the post-flat experience, humanity got an 80% approval rating:

-- First house, when I asked to borrow the phone to call my wife, the old guy just said No.
-- Second house, the woman said sure, come right in. Plus she was baking cookies, offered me one. Husband, lying on the couch watching the Masters, was friendly too.
-- Back outside waiting for Gail, a guy in a pick-up stopped, asked if I needed a ride someplace.
-- And then a guy riding a fat bike came by, offered to help fix the flat, but then I said my new tube hadn't made it into my saddle bag...

4 out of 5 is pretty good.

About 50, WSW 10 mph.

2 PM

biking - red bike 1:22:33 intensity: (51 @1) + (14:48 @2) + (57:30 @3) + (9:14 @4) + (10 @5) 20.7 mi (3:59 / mi) +1068ft 3:48 / mi
ahr:138 max:161 weight:143lbs

Mid 50s, N 0-5 mph. First time in a long time I went up in the hills a little bit, up to Lake Wyola and back. I had the excuse all winter of not feeling like it was all that safe, but the ice is long gone. Started with this modest route. Going up sure seemed difficult, but then coming back was fun.

Back is doing better. :-)

Monday Apr 3, 2017 #

2 PM

biking - red bike 1:24:04 intensity: (1:03 @1) + (29:17 @2) + (49:13 @3) + (4:31 @4) 20.74 mi (4:03 / mi) +548ft 3:57 / mi
ahr:133 max:159 weight:143lbs

Low 60s, S 0-5 mph. Sure a lot nicer than it's been. Pleasant ride except for the section of dirt road I ventured on that got muddy enough I was barely able to keep going. There was a sign saying it was not maintained in winter....

The upside of venturing on that rarely travelled bit of road, at least this time of year, was scaring up a flock of horned larks, maybe 75-100 of them.

Sunday Apr 2, 2017 #

5 PM

biking - red bike 32:28 intensity: (55 @1) + (23:20 @2) + (8:13 @3) 8.36 mi (3:53 / mi) +71ft 3:51 / mi
ahr:121 max:148 weight:144lbs

Better than expected.

Back has been unhappy the last week or more, in particular every time I stand up (sitting/sleeping are fine). And last time on the bike it was hurting when I stood on the pedals. That, plus annoying weather the last week, made it easy not to go out. But had to try sometime.

Mid 50s, NW 5-10 mph. Very short and easy. The legs were certainly well rested. The good part was standing on the pedals (just 3 or 4 times, as the route was almost flat) didn't hurt. At least this time.

Be thankful for small pleasures....

Note

A distinguished visitor to Mike's Maze this afternoon, though when I saw it -- a friend who lives right next to the maze called me) -- it had already moved to the corn fields south of Cemetery Road.
