orienteering 1:36:08 [3] 11.4 km (8:26 / km)
shoes: new Integrators

U.S. Long Champs. A better run, though the orienteering was much easier. Pretty good effort, but still quit on some hills sooner than I should have. But I ran hard to the last control, which turned out to be needed to edge Pavlina, though Samantha beat me handily despite one bad control. Routes/comments.

orienteering 37:20 [3] 4.1 km (9:06 / km)

US Short Champs. Ran OK, but not great, orienteered pretty badly. Didn't seem to have a sense of moving well, though the woods were junky in a lot of places and maybe that had something to do with it. Really quite pissed afterwards. Routes/comments.

Stayed a Camp Pinnacle, despite its lack of wireless access (I'd decided I didn't need to stay up until 3 am watching TioMila). Dinner was very mediocre but had several very pleasant hours just hanging out and shooting the breeze. Glad we stayed there.

Bull Hill - Greene Swamp loop on Mt. Toby. Haven't done this for a while and it's actually a good loop -- although most of the climb is in the first half, there are still some ups towards the end that make it an honest hour and a quarter effort. Normal pace, not pushing it.

And then an 83, putting like a demon to make up for a variety of stray shots....

trail running race 21:35 [5] 5.0 km (4:19 / km)
rhr:48 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

5K XC at ForestPark in Springfield (route is marked in pink). Real hard effort, legs felt good, nice evening, probably upper 50s. Had Phil right behind me for the first 2 of the 5 hills, so I was running a little faster than I cared to. Then he drifted back a little, but by then I was committed to a hard pace.

Pleased with the time (21:35). Ran it twice in 2004 (22:52 and 22:13) and once last year (21:50), also a couple times in 1983 (19:20 and 19:36). It's not a fast course, more ups and downs and maybe 45-60 seconds slower than the Northampton course. Got the 61 record, old mark was 22:52.

trail running 53:33 [3]

Had to be up in Greenfield so I did the 13 hills loop. Legs felt lousy, but hung in there ok.

Followed immediated by some O' training with the little white ball (hit it, go find it...).

Other event of the day was being delayed getting out the driveway by a red fox. It was just sitting there scratching itself while I waited about 10 yards away. So I called up Gail and told her to come look, and by then the fox was moving, walking 10 or 20 yards down the driveway and then stopping again to sit down and scratch. Eventually it moseyed off into the woods and I left, though Gail said it was still in no hurray. She wondered if they make flea collers for foxes. I suppose they probably sell them on E-Bay.

On Mt. Toby, over to the gate, down to the river, back up through Gunn Farm and Gunn Mt. Road and back down N. Mt. Road. Legs felt tired most of the way, but then I pushed the pace a bit on the hill up from the river and they didn't feel so bad. Surprising.

Plan for the week: 45-60 minutes tomorrow, 5K XC in Forest Park in Springfield on Wednesday, 60-90 minutes Thursday, and then the EMPO meet on the weekend.

orienteering 1:01:30 [4] 7.7 km (7:59 / km) +1050ft 6:37 / km
weight:135.5lbs shoes: new Integrators

WCOC meet at Five Ponds in Litchfield, pouing rain, low 40s (in 24 hours went from bone-dry to flood dangers). Good run, legs felt good probably due to the cold. And a real nice course by George and Lyn, lots of fun orienteering and nice terrain, no mountain laurel unless you went looking for it. Thanks!

Counted the climb, got 320 meters. Sure was a lot easier than 320 meters in cincinnati terrain, where every one of those meters was real steep. Here you could run all of it, well, you could, but I didn't, walked a couple spots. But still ran well.

Routes/comments.

orienteering 26:00 [3]

Picked up the White and Yellow course controls afterwards. All tied with slip knots, very friendly for picking them up on a cold and wet day, didn't have to fumble untying knots.

trail running 1:37:19 [3]
rhr:48 weight:134lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

On the ridge east of Colrain. I ran here once before and had been meaning to go back.

Wonderful trail. Lots of ups and downs, some very gentle, a couple of steeper ones like over Avery Hill. Started at the south end at Chandler Hill Cemetery, north to the dirt road just past Franklin Hill where I turned around last time, but this time I went the extra half mile to the Vermont line. 49:13 out, 48:06 back. Beautiful day and scenery. I wonder what the FDFs are like up there in summer.

Note to Phil: Remember, we're going try those little blue hats with sticky stuff, see if we can put a dent in the FDF population. No backing out, no matter how silly we will look!

Note

With all the free time I supposedly have, I won't be wasting any of it on this movie. I have enough anxiety as it is.

track 18:27 [4] 4.8 km (3:51 / km)
weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

At the track, nice workout. Resisted Phil's goading to run faster than I wanted, so I didn't waste myself on the first one and it all felt comfortable. 2 800s, a 1600, then 2 800s. 3:08.9, 3:05.7, 6:15.7, 3:01.8, 2:56.0.

Try to run longer tomorrow.

trail running 50:52 [2]
weight:134lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Sugar-Gunn loop on Mt. Toby, easy pace because I wasn't feeling much zip or much motivation, had to go earlier than I would have liked because I had an appointment on the golf course. Started out to do 70 minutes, then adjusted it to 60, then decided 50 was enough. Some days are like that.

Intervals tomorrow with the group at Eaglebrook, first of the season.

trail running race 20:52 [4] 3.1 mi (6:44 / mi)
rhr:49 weight:135lbs shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Northampton 5K XC (held every Tuesday evening from April through September). About what I expected, so neither thrilled nor disappointed. Last year ran it three times (20:52, 21:01, and 20:50). Had the feeling I had a little more in me, recovered pretty quickly after the finish. We shall see. Warmish evening, about 70 but low humidity, pretty nice.

Also managed to snag the age 61 record by not quite 30 seconds. The fellow I knocked off the board was, well let's say I wasn't a fan of his. Maybe it was the combination of him always racing in a shirt that said "Jesus saves" and the fact that his son was a convicted sex offender (and it was commonly assumed that like son, like father....). And the son, editor of the running club's newsletter at the time, thought he could just continue being the editor from jail. Orienteers may be strange, but running has its share too.

trail running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

15 minutes before, 15 minutes after.

Note

Last day of tax season, though that didn't seem to stop people from making appointments later in the week. But 99% of the work is done, including one guy today who just wanted to file an extension, but also wanted to pay roughly what he might owe. So after a quick calculation he wrote out checks for 35K to the IRS and 15K to Mass and went home a happy man. Seems he sold some land a couple of years ago on the installment plan for a couple million dollars profit. I think I'm in the wrong business.

The problem now will be to keep training, which is harder now that I have more time (and my golfing friends are already calling), and to keep from putting the weight back on. If I could stay at 135 that would be just fine.

I also have to catch up on a bunch of O' stuff I've been letting slide for the last couple of months.

trail running 59:17 [3] +1591ft
rhr:47 weight:134.5lbs shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Patriots Day today, no work (and just one more day left!), went down to Mt. Norwottuck to do the same loop I did with Phil in December, though it's actually not a loop but an inside/outside lollipop or some such thing.

Curious to see if I could make it under an hour without really pushing the pace, and just did. Though not pushing the pace doesn't mean not working hard on the hills, still going under pretty easily.

Legs were still feeling it a bit from Saturday.

Sent in entries for West Point (M45) and WP sprint, Billygoat and Billygoat sprints, and Team Trials (M21).

Northern Nipmuck Trail Race. Drove over with Phil, and had a nice surprise to find Clint (as expected), Joe B (a bit unexpected), and JJ (you got to be kidding me, he was supposed to be hang gliding, actually he was also supposed to be buying a new hang glider also), which meant that we had a nice crowd of orienteers out of the 100+ at the race.

Ran ok, though just a little disappointed with the time. I'd run it 3 times before -- 2:37:53 in 2001, 2:35:47 in 2004, and 2:35:54 in 2005 -- and I thought under 2:35 was doable, but it was not to be. I suppose I can claim that it was on the warm side (low 70s, compared to 50s the last couple of years), and that a small course change in the middle added maybe a minute to a minute and a half, but the time was, well, just a little slower than I hoped. On the other hand, on a day when the legs didn't feel great, I finished pretty strong, best split I've done for the last quarter of the race.

Actually, I finished really strong, just not quite enough. The last 3/4 mile or so is downhill, no more ups, and that's usually time to turn on the jets and today was no different. With a quarter mile to go the trail gets rockier, and just then I spotted a guy ahead, maybe 60-70 yards. Fast as I can, and I'm closing the gap quickly, and we get to the last little very rocky descent and he hears me coming and he takes off and we both going full speed through the rocks and it's stupid cause a crash would be very painful, but we're both stay upright and I'm edging ahead and I get the inside line on the right turn at the bottom and I've got him by a couple of yards,... except there's still about 40 yards of nice pine-needle-covered jeep trail to the finish and he pulls back even and noses me out by maybe a yard. The foolish things adreniline makes us do.

Splits:
2001: 34:21, 41:46, 43:08, 38:38
2004: 34:03, 40:59, 42:30, 38:15
2005: 34:37, 41:28, 41:57, 37:52
2006: 33:37, 43:04, 43:05, 37:29

Very good run by Clint (2:39), not doing his usual cramping. Joe was maybe another minute or two back, taking it easy (hockey the night before, then heading to a hash this afternoon, if I tried to do that I'd be the hashee), Phil and JJ just over 3.

Note

On my return home Gail said a package had arrived in the mail, addressed to both of us, and she been waiting for me to get home to open it, but now could we get to it. And it was --

What a fine surprise! Wrapped in a copy of the Five Ponds map. Guess I had better be there for the WCOC map next Sunday. Will they offer an F85 class (.4 km, 0 climb, all on smooth trails) for my mom?

A short outing with JJ after taking care of business. Checked out various hang-gliding launch spots near the Poet's Seat tower.

Relaxed pace, legs felt good, probably means they won't feel so good for tomorrow's trail race.

With Phil on the 13 hills loop (minus about 2 minutes of pavement on each end). Nice run. Pigged out afterwards with some lentil and sausage soup and a burger. The only thing missing was a nap, but despite my requests there is not yet a couch in the conference room.

13 flats loop, not feeling very motivated but managed ok anyway. Entertained myself by thoughts of orienteering past and future -- the future concerned the upcoming Short and Long Champs, where it seems that there are several younger old folks who often feel macho (i.e. run Blue), who are feeling macho enough to sign up for Blue for the Short, but 18 km of machoness on Sunday seems a bit more than they are willing to tackle.

All of which makes me wonder if it's too late to change my class for Sunday to M21, since the competition will be on the slim side. I must admit I was thinking about this on the way up a hill, and the thought of 3 hours on a course seemed a bit, well, unpleasant. But under the right circumstances -- some of the competition bonks, a bunch more is non-eligible -- a good placing might be possible.

This would all be much simpler if there weren't so many categories, as some have suggested. Seems like three men's categories should do the trick: -20 (kids), 21-64 (adults), and 65+ (geezers).

Out the ridge trail to Sachem Head and back. Legs were dead at the beginning but a good bit better after 15 minutes. Nice day, nice run.

Looking at yesterday's splits, I sure faded at the end, losing a bunch of time on the last little loop. Lacking in willpower.

Another conclusion from the weekend is that the big dogs were on the Red course. I hadn't realized that by running the Blue I was ducking the competition.

Day 2, this time at Wolf's Den, a map I've run on a couple of times 3 or 4 years ago. Still some areas of mountain laurel, but the white woods were much nicer, and overall a much more enjoyable course, this one set by Charlie with vetting by JJ. Thanks guys.

I had a decent run, though I was very tired, didn't really have good legs, and was struggling a lot, especially in the second half (I'll be curious to see if the splits bear this out). Had a stone or something in one shoe right under my arch for about the last 20 minutes, couldn't get it relocated, didn't feel like stopping, but no damage done. A couple of small mistakes, no more than a minute each. Routes/comments.

Best today was Swampfox, nice to see him have a good run after his travails at the Pig and yesterday. It ain't fun when your legs crap out on you. He won handily, about 85 minutes. Then Eddie, Clem, Kenny in the mid to upper 90s, Joe at 100. So I wasn't as far back as I thought I might be. It felt like I could have been 5 minutes faster on a better day, but that may well be just wishful thinking.

But overall a surprisingly good weekend considering how I've been feeling this week. Though my legs are real tired now.

orienteering 59:04 [3] 5.6 km (10:33 / km) +574ft 9:07 / km
weight:133.5lbs shoes: new Integrators

NEOC A meet at Wells SP in Sturbridge. I ran at Wells a bunch of times in the late 70s on a black and white map, and then for an A meet on a color map in 1985, but not since then. I had memories of some crappy woods (mainly mountain laurel) but also some nice forest, and my kilometer times back in '85 were about 7:30. What surprised me today was that we used some new terrain to the NE of the old map (controls 1-11) and just 10-20% of the terrain on the old map. If the whole area was remapped, then a lot of it wasn't used. One thing that was consistent between today's map and the old ones was the imagination that went into it, particularly with relation to the green, which seemed more a reflection of the color of trees than the runnability. Just so you don't think I'm picking on the mapping of the green, there was some interesting mapping of the contours and the rocks, too, and, well, not to leave them out, the man-made features and the water too. The mapping of the yellow seemed ok.

Slowly feeling better, I guess, at least I'm eating more. Had a strange combination today, feeling light on my feet (legs felt good and it was cold day), but also not much energy. So I walked up all the hills. At least I wasn't making mistakes of any consequence. If you're going slow enough, the orienteering is usually pretty easy. Routes/comments.

Thermometer said 44F, but it felt much colder. Wore an extra long-sleeve shirt and was still cold, and very cold afterwards.

12.5 km tomorrow, yummy. Will try to go for 2 in a row over Swampfox, though he's getting old and is pretty easy to beat these days. Maybe I should let him beat me tomorrow, just to give him a morale boost?

Classic day at the Pig. Felt pretty beat after yesterday. Course was the usual very hilly stuff for the first half and then mostly flat the second half. Didn't have any zip in the hills, not so bad on the flats even though the running there wasn't so easy, combination of thickish vegetation and a lot of standing water. Navigation was generally fine, but not much of a sense of urgency.

I may be still a little tired from the half marathon. Hopefully will be better this coming weekend.

U.S. Sprint Champs. Real nice event. Three courses, ran M45 on the Blue/Rd course, 22nd overall I think, first M45. Best was Patrick Goeres from Canada, about 14:30, closest American (Clem?) was just under 16 I think.

I had a pretty good run, but didn't feel particularly energetic. But not too bad.

U.S. Relay Champs, unofficial CSU 8-point team of Suzanne, Gail, me and Mikell. Another decent run withverying energy. Didn't have any zip climbing the many steep hills, but had moments in the latter part of the course when I felt fine. Orienteering was interesting, especially the route choices. I think there were two team ahead of us, the winning DVOA team and an unofficial Canadian team.
