orienteering 29:35 [4] 3.4 km (8:42 / km)

US Relay Champs. Ran on CSU B team (Karen, me, Kenny, Boris), finished 2nd behind DVOA, just ahead of other CSU team (Dan, Suzanne, Ross, Will).

Decent run, but left something to be desired in effort (should have been a minute faster). Calf started hurting pretty bad after 2nd control, but didn't really slow me down. Felt terrible afterwards....

Terrain was ok, but yesterday was more pleasant. I'll post maps in a week when I'm home.

orienteering 51:55 [3] 5.3 km (9:48 / km)

A-Meet in McCall, Idaho, Green course. Took it easy. Calf a little sore, but never bad so I kept going. A couple of errors, but overall quite enjoyable.

Wednesday Jun 25, 2003 #

Note

Calf is quite sore, not terrible. Have to take it easy and see how it is this weekend. Can always load up on ibuprofen....

orienteering 2:37:59 [3] 18.5 km (8:32 / km)

"Great Northern Goat" at Riverside Park just west of Spokane. Fine event. Orienteered ok, no big mistakes but a little sloppy on a couple of routes. Actually ran ok too, decent energy, but my right calf started acting up after about 45 minutes, and it hurt the rest of the way. Made it a bit of a struggle...

Course was interesting. Three controls on the O' map, then 5 on adjacent land using the USGS topo map, then 4 on more adjacent land using an air photo, then a dozen more back on the O' map. In places very easy, in places quite hard. Quite a lot of road/trail running, but also one leg that was probably no more than 400 meters, which took me abour 12 minutes and which I took the optimum route and spiked the control. May have been due to the fact that first you dropped 100' straight down (could barely hold on), crossed a 6-foot wide creek, and then climbed about 450' up a scree slope/cliff.

Finished 2nd, Eric Bone was 2:22, but he missed a good bit and I had a better skip.

orienteering 30:34 [4] 3.95 km (7:44 / km)

Short O' Fishtrap Lake (Red course), SW of Spokane. Great area with an apparently much improved map by Elis. Good run, good effort, and didn't see any rattlesnakes!

Sunday Jun 22, 2003 #

orienteering 47:59 [4] 5.6 km (8:34 / km)

Day 2 at Lick Creek (used for the Relay Champs in 1998). A couple of small mistakes but a better run and a better effort. Course was harder than yesterday (which was quite easy, with all the flags very visible).

Saturday Jun 21, 2003 #

orienteering 43:10 [3] 5.2 km (8:18 / km)

Day 1 of the NW O Festival, Cle Elum, Teanaway Forks map. A little sloppy. I'll post my routes when we get home....

biking 2:59:30 [3]

Northfield, Warwick, Wendell. 51 miles. Was planning to run, but it was such a nice afternoon. Caught a nice tailwind on the way up to Northfield, paid for it later....

Monday Jun 16, 2003 #

biking 49:13 [4]

Leverett loop, working hard. 15.3 miles.

Sunday Jun 15, 2003 #

biking 2:27:40 [1]

With Charlie in NW Connecticut. Reasonably hilly but a leisurely pace as he has not been on the bike much this year.

Saturday Jun 14, 2003 #

trail running 29:47 [3]

Up to the power line and back. Decent effort, legs not too bad.

Thursday Jun 12, 2003 #

biking 1:20:00 [3]

With Phil, from Northampton: Westhampton, Leeds, Haydenville. Working the hills, relaxed otherwise, good interval workout. Very pleasant ride, especially since with my new bike I can now keep up with him....

Tuesday Jun 10, 2003 #

biking 2:45:47 [3]

Conway, Shelburne Falls, Colrain, Greenfield, 46 miles. Nice day, a little warm, feeling pretty depleted the last 45 minutes for a ride that wasn't overly hilly (maybe 2500'?). Legs probably still a little tired from yesterday.

Monday Jun 9, 2003 #

trail running 54:37 [3]

On the Healdville Trail on the NW side of Okemo Mt. in Ludlow, Vermont. 33:02 up, 21:35 down. Did maybe 1400-1500' climb, didn't go all the way to the top as I was short of time (had a 1:15 tee time with Mike Fritz and Martin Mulligan...). But a good effort. Calf still a little tender.

Sunday Jun 8, 2003 #

biking 1:07:07 [3]

Wyola and back, 20.7 miles. Felt sluggish to start, but then progressively better.

Friday Jun 6, 2003 #

biking 1:31:08 [3]

Wyola, Shutesbury, Leverett loop with Walter, 26 miles. I can now keep up with him, long climb felt easy, chatting all the way. Legs felt good.

Thursday Jun 5, 2003 #

trail running 31:01 [3]

Power line and back, calf mostly ok....

Tuesday Jun 3, 2003 #

biking 2:17:30 [3]

Down to and around the Holyoke Range, flat to rolling, about 42 miles. Good steady effort.

Monday Jun 2, 2003 #

biking 50:48 [4]

Leverett loop, good effort. Beautiful early morning ride.

Sunday Jun 1, 2003 #

trail running 39:57 [3]

Up to the top of Mt. Toby the direct way (30:45), partway back. Didn't push it going up to the power line, so ran farther up the steep section before walking became mandatory. Felt ok. But got a twinge in my right calf on the way down, and I know from experience the best thing is just to walk it in, 30 minutes in the rain and getting rather cold. Bummer. But hopefully the damage isn't much.
